BLUM: Let's make a QB deal

Yes he has good numbers. But the problem is his passes are not accurate. Even on many passes he completes he makes the receiver work for them. He also cannot hit on deep passes. The last thing is and this isn't all on him, ISU is flat out bad in the redzone. Teams will allow him to dink and dunk on them all day long and dare him to throw deep all day long because he cannot beat them with the deep pass. If ISU does drive the ball into the redzone with short passes, it is hard for them to score.

My problem with SR is that he plays safe:
- Typically doesn't throw to receivers in a location that they can make the next move for yards after catch
- Typically doesn't throw to receivers that aren't wide open

He plays in manner that values higher completion %/fewer interceptions rather than a QB that wants to move the ball down field and succeed.
i like this assasment. The stats Sam has are fluffed by all the non-plays. Short runs that should have been balls thrown 10-20 yards downfield. If you don't throw the ball you don't make interceptions but your drive stalls. When the field condenses spaces are tighter and decisions have to get faster. No risk, no throw, ends up with no td too often. The eye test says it's not the plays he makes it's the plays he balks at executing. I don't know what stats will show this. I liked Sam's game better when he would take off and run decisively. Sam Strapped into the pocket has not been a good experiment.

So you're telling me a QB with a shoulder injury is more impacted by it than a QB with a leg injury? Weird. No one would ever expect that.
That is complete malarkey if Sam had a shoulder injury he shouldn't have been on the field. We have options.

Sam just does not seem comfortable or confident a lot of time. I'm sure that rubs off on the rest of the offense at times. There are plent of times when good stats don;t tell the story.

Cole Netten is also statistically a good kicker but seems to wilt when the heat is on.
Also, I can't remember the number but Terry Bradshaw had a very poor QB rating but he managed to win 4 Super Bowls.

It blows me away that people can make statements like this and not realize that they're essentially proving the opposite point they're trying to make.

Assigning wins to QBs to judge their effectiveness is insane. How can we bemoan the fact that Troy Davis got screwed out of the Heisman because he didn't play on a good team, but say that Sam Richardson isn't a good enough QB because he didn't win enough games? It's completely illogical.

Terry Bradshaw didn't win 4 Super Bowls. The Steel Curtain did. But idiots forget that.

He needs to beat more than KU.

Blum's columns are almost always a good read. His "Let's Make A Deal" approach is good framework.

I think his larger-picture assessment is — ISU's struggles as program extend beyond QB performance.

I'm glad Blum started this thread. SR is not the reason we have been losing football games. My God I know he is an easy target since he is the QB, but I think he has played fairly well other than last week. Had a bad game.

I suspect he is much better than Lanning and if Lanning does indeed earn the starter role I think it will be obvious to all that is the case.

And then our entire starting line went down with injuries if memory serves and he had about .5 seconds to get rid of the ball
