Biggest Non-QB Draft Busts

I think there are some wildly different ideas as to what constitutes a "bust". Some players may not live up to their draft pick, but if they put together a solid, decade long career in a league where the average career lasts 3-4 years, that isn't a bust in my opinion. To me a bust is a player who gets drafted high and flames out in one or two seasons while barely making an impact on the field. Tony Mandarich was a complete bust. Robert Gallery didn't pan out as a Hall of Fame level left tackle, but I wouldn't call him a bust.

I would agree with your definition. It's hard to call someone who develops into a solid NFL player a bust. They might be a dissapointment, you don't spend the number two pick in the draft on a solid guard, but they aren't busts.

Why Robert gallery? He's just playing on a crappy team.

Yeah I don't think I would call him a total bust because he has started a bunch of games and is still playing now. He might not be the pro bowl tackle that was expected but he is not completely worthless.

Edit: It looks like Gallery is on the pats now so I wouldn't say he is on a crappy team anymore.

He wasn't a great LT in the NFL like he was hyped to be. He doesn't even play LT anymore, he is a guard. I wouldnt say he is a bust though.

I think your idea of a bust is dramatically different than mine. Robert Gallary has been a starting offensive lineman for 8 years (and counting). He was not worth the #2 pick which makes it a bad pick but he's been a quality guard which means he's not a bust. To me a bust is a player who was drafted in the first two rounds who returned little to no value to the team that drafted him.

Ricky Williams wasn't worth all the assets NO traded for him, but he has more than lived up to where he was picked.

I think he was considered a bust because he was the No. 2 overall pick and failed at left tackle for the first couple of years. Once he was moved to left guard he began to succeed. I believe he's with the Seahawks now?

I agree, its kinda like the Reggie Bush thing, he didnt live up to expectations of being a Pace or soemthing, but he has started forever and thats pretty tough to do.

The biggest single bust of all time has to be Mandarich doesn't it? The dude was supposed to reinvent the position, but it turned out that he was just a roid freak.

Using your definition, and sticking just to the Packers, wouldn't Jamal Reynolds be a bigger bust? He was drafted 10th instead of 2nd but he only played in 18 games his entire career while Mandarich played in 86. Brent Fullwood was drafted 4th and only played in 46. The thing that sets Mandarich apart is that he had QB level hype coming into the NFL so everybody knows who he was. It is also made worse because the next 3 guys off the board were Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, and Deion Sanders. Not to mention Aikman was picked first. Four hall of famers and one not so much.

I have a hard time calling Reggie Bush a bust. He's pretty much exactly the player people thought he would be in the NFL: not durable enough for an every down RB, but extremely elusive/productive in space as part of the passing and return game.

He's nowhere close to being the dominant force he was in college, but he's way too productive for "bust" in my mind. Same goes for Gallery.

Calling Ricky Williams a bust is insane.

Definitely seems like it would be a toss up between him and Leaf for the most notorious bust of all time.

Although I think Mandarich ended up being decent late in his career. Could be wrong about that though.

I tore the league apart with Biakabutuka in Madden NFL '97 on the Sega Saturn. No one is a bust when you can max out his stats to 99 in every category.

I did the same with Marques Tuiasosopo in '01. I'd always pick the dude with the sweetest name, jack up his attributes, and just tear **** up.

John Cappelletti was in the NFL for 9 years, and scored 24 rushing TDs, racked up almost 3000 yds.
