Big 12 Embarrassing

Huge wins for both West Virgina and TCU yesterday. Props to both of them for battling but it was evident in that TCU game that the drop off at quarterback when Adam's left was too much for Oregon to overcome. Some said that same thing about TCU as well after Boykin got arrested but no matter how you slice it having those 2-3 extra days helps when it comes to losing your starting quarterback. Oregon had no extra time whatsoever and ultimately when your 2nd string center can't get your back up quarterback the football there's going to be issues. I would argue they had just as many issues defensively as they did offensively. The credit should go to TCU's 2nd string, what a story with that kid. I can't imagine how hard it would be to play that recently after your father passes away, let alone to play that well.

The WVU game was a dogfight and they deserved to win that game. It likely should've been by more IMO as there were numerous coaching Gafs by Todd Graham. One of them goes back to a thread I started 2 weeks ago about going for 2. It further justified my point in that thread about coaches not understanding the game of football from a statistical standpoint. 4.56 left last night, ASU down by 1 and they score a TD. Does Todd keep his offense out there? Nope...Kicks the PAT. If that's what earns you a 2.8 million dollar salary and a 200k bonus this year, then sign me up. Either that or he had a personal bet on his guys at +1.5.......

I know you think I'm a troll so I'll give you my honest opinion about the Iowa game. I think they were overwhelmed early in that game and clearly got so far behind that they had no hope of making a comeback. Had they started the game like they started the 2h I think they would've made it a game but ultimately they didn't have enough to stop McCaffery and couldn't give Beathard the protection he needed for them to have success passing. It was pretty obvious that they let the big game stage get into their heads and came out like deer in headlights. As Iowa State fans we're accustomed to that feeling of either coming out hot and sleeping our way through the 2nd half. It's a battle all coaches have to deal with and until they get their teams to play both halves, things like this will continue to happen. I often struggled with how Coach Rhoads could get the guys to come out and play the way we did in the first halves this year and then do the furthest thing from show up in the 2nd half. So I looked into the halves of each game this year bc I thought for sure we were killing it 1h and choking it away 2h. We were actually outscored in the 1h of games this year 190-189. It was evident from being at all the games this year that we sucked in the 2h and looking at the scorelines it only reassures it. We were outscored 175-113 this year and that's actually a little deceiving because we outscored UNI 21-0 and we all know that's a game we absolutely should win year after year and that wasn't the case under Rhoads.

Back to the Big10/Big12 argument some of you think I'm trying to argue. I honestly wasn't making it into a Big10/Big12 thing or Iowa/Iowa State thing. I do still believe that it was another disastrous bowl season for the Big 12 though, my opinion will not change on that. We finished 3-4 but it took two wins yesterday to get to that point against two teams that give up close to 35ppg to their opponents. The only conferences we finished ahead of were the Mid-American, American Athletic, and lastly the 2 Independent schools who went 0-2. I could compare the wins between the two conferences but again I'm not trying to argue Big10/Big12.

The only game that truly matters when it's all said and done is the Championship game and neither conference has a team representing them this year. Until that happens again I don't think there's any argument to be had. Last year there was, and it wasn't a member of the Big 12. Sorry this post kind of went all over the place.

Agree with a lot of what you said except a couple things. I don't think the big stage excuse really works for Iowa in this one. Besides having the best player on the field by far, Stanford looked faster and more athletic at almost every position on the field. Iowa didn't manage to do anything until a bad snap led to a field goal, and two meaningless 4th quarter td's came after Stanford lost interest and started subbing. Iowa has now lost 4 bowls in a row, 3 in humiliating fashion with the games over early. I just think their weak schedule leads to a deceptive record and gets them into bowl games over their heads, especially since the Big 10 went to two divisions and Iowa in the weaker division. I agree the Big 12 needs to get its act together, the last few bowl seasons haven't been good. But I do think key injuries this year prevented Baylor and TCU from being right there for the play-offs. Injuries are part of the game but rarely can a team can lose a great qb and recover completely. Look at Oregon.

And had he worded it this way originally I would have completely agreed with him. I never said that Iowa or Michigan State were elite teams. But if he's saying there's 3 elite teams in the Big 12 this year and that the Big 12 had a great bowl season I would respectfully disagree.

And clearly TCU and Baylor were both hurt with injuries this year. I would agree that both teams would have been elite had they not lost key players mid season. Instead they did lose those players and both teams ended up quite a ways away from elite, in my personal opinion.

No one is arguing about Northwestern, Iowa or Michigan State. Did the Big 12 have a good bowl year in your honest opinion? Just answer that and lets let this go. If you answer yes, then congratulations as if it's not already obvious, we have a different way of justifying things.

I haven't said the Big 12 was awesome in bowls. I've mainly been pointing out how ridiculously overrated the Big 10 is and trolls like you surfaced to refute that.

The SEC looked great. Outside of that each of the other 4 P5 conferences had 1-2 teams represent well and a lot of others exposed.

You started a thread about embarrassment. 3 top 13 ranked teams getting blown out is where the conversation starts if you want to have threads about embarrassing bowl seasons. The only Big 12 teams ranked as high as NW and Iowa handled themselves drastically better than the 3 Big Ten pretenders who were a media/committee fabrication.

Well said and I would agree with all of this.

All-Time Major Bowls:

Big 12 138 Bowls, 67-71-0, .486 W-L%
Big 10: 257 Bowls, 116-140-1, .453 W-L%

It's impossible to predict statistically but after over 110 more games I think it's safe to say the current Big 12 would be pretty close to what the Big 10 is currently in major bowls.
All-time? Sure- keep living in the 50's. Sorry Section, but around the country the BIG is synonymous with bad. It has long been known as a dying brand of football, and expanding with Rutgers and NU is exactly helping that. If you are going to be so insecure about that fact, you may want to spend less time on CF, but i doubt your little bro like need for approval will allow that.

I fully admit I started the thread prematurely. I never once refuted that the Big 10 is overrated, they **** the bed just as much as the Big 12 this year in bowl games. Neither team has a team playing for the National Championship so really all of this is irrelevant, winning the Championship is the most important game. My argument with you is your definition of what makes a team "elite" and you failed to explain your definition of "elite"

So I digress

They struck gold that they landed two amazing coaches in Meyer and Harbaugh. Outside of that the trend was really bad and they added Maryland and Rutgers to further weight the conference. We saw the result of Maryland Rutgers this year in that it helped their teams achieve fantasy based rankings only to have a reality sandwich served in bowls.

You didn't even understand the premise of my post. Whatever number of elite teams the Big 12 has, the Big Ten/ACC/SEC needs 40% more to be equal. That's irrefutable, I was surprised anyone would take issue with it.

Quit living in the 50's huh? If you think your point is made from stats from only 10 years then okay.

It's not about the Big 10 and Big 12, the Big 12 and only the Big 12 that's all i'm talking about here and they under performed this bowl season and didn't win as many games as I had hoped.

I fully understand your premise man and I get what you're saying completely. The Big 10 and SEC need to have 4-5 elite teams to equal the Big 12 who only has 10 teams. I'm asking what you use to qualify that a team to have the title, "elite"

I would argue the only "Elite" team in college football is Alabama and the rest are drastically behind.

This thread really didn't have to go this route, everyone has different opinions about every team in the country. I was simply disappointed at the start to the Bowl season for the Big 12.

Can we do a poll for this thread to see how many people agree with:

HFCS - 1 (my vote)
JackTrice3 - 0

Just hit reply with quote and add your vote.

HFCS > Section 110.

Was hoping he would get ban hammer before I had to add this user name to my ignore list too.

I never once said who is and isn't elite. You went off in a psycho way about it.

There's no definitive way to tell but I know Oklahoma, TCU, Baylor, Ohio State and Michigan will all have top 15 level computer metrics at the end of the season. Iowa, Northwestern, Michigan State and Oklahoma State won't necessarily, although OK State wasn't ranked as high as those B10 pretenders by the committee anyway.

I know you didn't say who was or was not elite, I wanted you to share what you thought made a team elite and the post above explains that, thanks.

Elite would probably mean a team capable of winning the national title, but then injuries prevented Baylor and TCU from being elite at the end of the year imo, and Ohio State had a one game hiccup to cost them. But I'm all for an 8 team play-off as I think most people thought Ohio State was really the best team in the Big 10, and hawk fans might think Stanford worthy of the play-offs. TCU and Baylor being left out last year was also a travesty that would have been prevented with 8 teams. Ohio State and TCU would likely have been the true national championship. Would also keep this silly play-off committee from having so much influence as to who wins the national title with more teams eligible. They also need to pay a lot more attention to the segarin rankings, which had the big ten's ranked teams pegged almost perfectly as demonstrated by the bowl results. And though it's been a rough few years for the big 12 lately, we're still 15-5 against the Big 10 during the last decade.

Let's wait and see how Alabama does against an up tempo high octane offense like Clemson before we anoint them as the only elite team. Two years ago they didn't fare too well against Oklahoma's up tempo offense. The play-off committee led by Osborne and Alvarez I assume, did a good job of making sure their favorite teams didn't have to face any high octane offenses with very athletic dual threat qb's. Alabama faced a pretty good one with Ole Miss and now they will see another one, so we'll see how it goes.

Agree with all of this. The gray area for me is that a 1 loss Alabama team repeatedly will move ahead of a 1 loss Ohio State, 1 loss Baylor or TCU. Teams like TCU and Baylor are at a disadvantage because of not having a conference championship game so that 1 loss hurts even worse. Now most of the time Alabama is the better team but sooner or later if they don't change it to 8 teams soon that's going to happen. Just hope Clemson can knock them off in NC, just doubt it will happen.

I'm with ya. Would still like to see the Big 12 add 2 and go to divisions. Depending on who's added it might be a little difficult working out the divisions based on geography, but I'm sure it could be done.

Houston would be a HUGE get for the Big 12.
