We lost because we played like we expected Baylor to just lay down eventually. Every time we got up big, we took quick shots and our defensive intensity dropped.
I really don't think they have the actual chemistry that they like to pride themselves on. I don't see them jawing at each other in time outs and melting down like in some losses last year, but they're disjointed/not fluid on offense, and not very consistent with their defensive position/effort.
I also think their actual talent gets overblown. They have two legit threats from outside, and one threat inside as far as skill goes, and that's Niang.
I think Chris Williams said in a column earlier this year something along the lines that this is the most talent ISU's had (or maybe returning talent). That's not true. It's maybe the most experience they've had returning since the '96-97 or '00-01 seasons, but there's been more talented teams.
The '99-00 team is still the bar, but that team was not only talented, but plain rugged across the line. Big difference.
McKay is just a freaking head case. He may put of stats but he does not play as a teammate like Morris and niang. This team may not have depth, but they don't have mental toughness either. The 2000 team had toughness, that is the difference between a good team and a great team.
The problem is the fans have to do everything. Everything Cyclone fans enjoy they've earned for themselves. We willed the team to the tournament titles. We will the team to home wins. Without the fans to clue the team in on what's happening, the team doesn't have any idea what's going on.
Wasn't enough team work against the zone. We saw a couple of times making use of the backdoor and it was successful every time. The team just doesn't shoot well enough from beyond the arc to justify the volume in which they take that shot (and that is with most of their 3 point shots be relatively open).
