Assistant coach rumor I am hearing

Who is defending Greg? Who is saying you can't hate everyone but Grayer if you want to hate everyone? Grayer's legacy is set in stone, nothing can change that. No one is defending Greg. Let people be happy a great cyclone might be returning.

Hey, if you're happy that Jeff Grayer is coming back to Ames, good for you! Don't worry about the fact that a great former ISU player is going to be used to help prop up the continued employment of a man who can't seem to win more than 6 conference games in a season, even with NBA talent on his roster. Don't worry about the fact that Jeff Grayer is a loyal man who will take deserved criticism of GMac's incompetence as undeserved criticism of his own efforts. Don't even START to worry about how the eventual need to fire GMac (even half of his defenders here concede that his actions justify his firing, but they believe that JP won't pull the trigger, so we're stuck with him no matter what) could possibly sour the relationship between Jeff Grayer & the ISU fanbase.

And a minor point of order on your comments: Hate? I don't hate GMac or his staff.

I hate Dave Bliss. I hate OJ Simpson. I don't really "hate" sleazebags like Ricky Neuheisel, but I love to see them lose and LOSE BIG. Please don't confuse my recognition of GMac's inadequacy as our MBB coach with "hatred" of the man.

We have no idea if Grayer is remotely competent as a coach, so you're giving him too much credit here.

The only job performance issues I could find on him were that he was fired recently for performance issues.

Fair enough. Based on his resume up to this point, I think it would be grossly unfair to expect Jeff to come in and whip this program into shape strictly on the force of his personality. I would love to see Jeff working with a staff where he could learn the finer points of how to coach at the D1 level from the head coach & the more experienced assistants, but with the Mongolian Goat Rodeo we've got going at the ISU MBB program, I don't see him learning anything worth knowing from these guys. On the contrary, I think that his stay at ISU could require some sort of "detox" to remove all the crap he would learn in the GMac system and replace it with good fundamental basketball & interpersonal interactions.

Plus, since Jeff Grayer is JEFF FREAKIN' GRAYER, I'm going to lean towards giving him the benefit of the doubt in all cases.

Lot of anger in these posts for some reason. All I am saying is no one, and I mean zero people, are going to give Greg a break next year because he has Grayer on his staff. Jeff Grayer might sell 3 or 4 more season tickets, it will have zero impact, no one will even remember he is on the staff when we go 2-14 in conference. And nothing is going to make Grayer look bad, Grayer is never going to take any blame from the fan base for Greg's failures, that's all on Greg.

Mediocrity? GOD would I love to see true mediocrity in the ISU MBB program. Remember when the unreasonable fans at the U of I fired Tom Davis because........he ONLY took them to the NCAA tourney damn near every year?

Yeah!! Lose, Cyclones lose!!! Woohoo!!

I think Grayer would be a great idea, but if you dont get rid of the problem, do you really have a solution? McDermott will still be the coach of this team and its obvious he is not the right fit. Coordinators can help a coach in football, but I do not see a similar relationship in basketball with assistants.

I'm not a huge fan of either of these hires because it doesn't look like they are going to help recruiting much if at all. I don't understand Mcdermott's strategy here because if he doesn't bring in one or two real top level talents in the next couple of years there is no way he will still be around. He's basically trying to solve the "keeping players around" problem too late. There's nobody to keep around anymore and at this point it's desperation time in which he should be trying to get the best possible recruiters in here to try and save his job.

You know what I'd like to see?

For once, I'd like to see a GMac team play the first game of the Big 12 BB tournament against a team with a lower seed than we have. That's it. I don't need to see him get a first round bye. I don't need to see a championship banner in Hilton. Just show me that you can place in the top half of the bottom two-thirds of our conference, and I'll consider that to be significant improvement.

After all, you've got to crawl before you can walk.

Having one great assistant can be the difference, especially in terms of recruiting. UNI about five years ago might be a perfect example.
