Anyone in NE Iowa?

I am assuming that if you have insurance you are covered for a loss of this nature... but how long does it take to get the insurance company to start cutting checks? Do they help with hotel expense...

Wind is usually a covered peril for most companies for sure. Most companies should extend coverage for hotel expenses as well, if people don't have these coverages at the minimum, you should all go to Allied Insurance where I work, we will get you set up. We have good agencies in Parkersburg, so hopefully those effected will be covered.

i live in aplington, but have many realatives and friends in p-burg who have lost a lot. one of my friends was fortunate enough to salvage at least 15 truck loads of stuff while one of my high school teachers couldn't find enough stuff to fill one truck load. the whole town is devastated and the high school is shredded. the "sacred acre" doesn't look so good and the same could be said with the weight room, coach thomas's room which was a shrine in itself and his house and vehicles are all gone. i feel for everyone in the town, but especially him.

Very many cars and ATVs with insurance company logos on them travelling around town yesterday and a news report said they were issuing checks already right away yesterday to help people get through the short term. There were some stories going around of free apartments in Cedar Falls to house people for a while too. There were only 20 people that stayed in the shelter the first night and I'm sure less than that last night. It shows how close-knit of a community it is and how many have family in the immediate area when you consider probably close to 1000 people were displaced.
I was telling my buddy on my way up yesterday that we were a stubborn German community. It was "funny" (for lack of a better term" that the Red Cross and other organizations were set up serving food throughout the day and from what I saw, it was only the volunteers there serving the food with very few to serve to. However, drive to the Caseys in Aplington 5 miles away and the place is packed with a line out the door of people buying food by the grocery bag full to take back to people in Parkersburg. I'm sure you would see the same thing at a lot of communities throughout Iowa.
Even with a hundred different vehicles driving around town handing out water, there was always a brief look of what I can only describe as confusion because it was free.

Thoughts and prayers go out to those involved...

We had debris falling from the sky here in Fayette, and back home in Edgewood, truly unbelievable.

Just found out a good friend of ours lost both of her grandparents up there. Crazy stuff.

My prayers go out to all of those that were affected by this disaster.

I hestitated posting the following out of fear that I would appear to be minimizing the devastation in Parkersburg, New Hartford and Hazleton. I am in no way trying to do that.

It just occured to me, though, that had this tornado formed about 5-6 miles south it would have gone right through the heart of Cedar Falls/Waterloo. I can't even begin to imagine havoc that would have caused.

That has been brought up a few times. Many people have said "It could have been worse."

The New Hartford thing is weird because about every 5 years the town is completely under water so the locals were told to start building about a 1/2 mile outside of the town on a hill. So the only houses in town that are newer than 30 years old are the ones on this hill. Guess where it hit?

I used to live 2 miles from New Hartford and a mile from Charles Grassley, who lives in a very modest home.

I'm an insurance agent in Grundy Center, and we have a few houses insured in Parkersburg. I just met with my cousin regarding the insurance on her parent's house. Her mother (my aunt) lost her life in the tornado, and her father is in Iowa City but is improving. They are now thinking he can be home by this weekend and can attend the funeral. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy.

I'm heading up to Parkersburg this afternoon to tour the homes that we had insured, and while I want to see the town up close, I'm not looking forward to it. I drove within a mile of town yesterday, and I'm amazed at what I could see from a mile away.

I just got back from Parkersburg. It is very sad to see the area you grew up in completely destroyed. I have truly never seen anything like it. The tornado took down absolutely everything in its path. Fire depts from literally all over the state there and the seen is like something out of a movie. Everything is absolutely flattened. Today was spent helping people gather up their personal belongings and its sad to find gray wedding pictures ruined by rain. Several incredible stories coming from the town and after seeing it, its amazing that only 4 people were killed. The rumor going around is that they are giving residents until the end of the week to get their belongings and then they are bringing in the bulldozers. That's really the only thing that can be done at this point.

My prayers are with you and your family. I'm from SE Iowa (Fruitland) that was basically leveled last year by and F3-F4. I completly understand your desription and sadness. It's surreal and unexplainable. It puts you into shock when you actaully see the devastatiion. Keep faith and remeber that things will get cleaned up and it will take time, things are never the same but they do continue.

Once you see it, you won't believe it, just amazing the destruction. Sorry, still a little shocked, take care of your insureds!

I went home (Fruitland) last year to help clean up for a few days and it was amazing the support from the community, the Red Cross and even the insurnace companies, Some companies had reps there on the second day assessing and even cutting checks on the spot to help cope or get people by until a a final assessment could be made. For anyone in Parkersbug I know Musco Lighting , from Muscatine came in with thier stadium lights to help light the town at night (seemed like noon at midnight with those things) to help with looting and clean-up. The state police really do a good job at keeping order, still not a good experince. I can honestly say that it really shows how close an Iowa community is when something like this happens. The midwestern mentality is a blessing many done't realize until things like this happen.

A buddy sent me some pictures that are some of the best I've seen.
BC- Our "sacred acre" is going to take a lot of work to be back in playing shape for the fall. The new baseball field is in shambles as well.

Those pictures are the best I have seen. The field will be fixed before Thomas's own house is repaired, you know that is true, maybe he will be camping there until his house is done . I feel for them, my mom today said that the feds have come in and shaken things up there a bit. They made them move the emt units to the firestation, but people kept going to the highschool for tetnus shots and help with injuries, she says the feds have really had some pretty bad communications, and people have gotten confused. I can't believe they had and f5, that is crazy, thanks for the pics!

I took meteorology this semester. I don't remember much, but I'm pretty sure f-5 no longer exists and they changed how to determine sizes recently. But I am not positive

Rating was EF-5 or very low F-5 at 200-205 mph per latest report.

i heard it was being changed to an f-5 b/c of houses being moved off of their foundations
also there's a "praying for parkersburg" group on facebook that has a lot of good pics
