Abdelmassih to UConn?

The possibility of Matt A leaving right now is concerning to me. Mainly due to timing and his current relationships he has built for our next two classes with the large number of open scholarships in '13 & '14. (Also his good relationship with Brewster Academy, though Fred is well known there too) All that said, our continued success is going to lead to our assistants being poached from other programs, if he decides to leave I will wish him luck. Fred has all ready proven to have a good eye for identifying successful candidates for his staff, coaching and recruiting, thus I am sure he has a contingency plan in place. If this is the price of success I will begrudgingly pay it.

I am a little surprised his name came up just now, Ollie has been the UCONN coach in waiting for 1.5 years and on staff before that. I would have thought if they had a recruiting position open he would have already been contacted previously? Of course, Ollie may just want to be making his own imprint on the program and impressed with Matt and ISU success.

Otz is the one who has a great relationship with Brewster, not Abdelmassih.

This is where I think you can maybe bank on him having some loyalty to Fred. I don't think he'd make a big effort to poach any guys or talk them out of ISU.

Isn't Fred good friends with Ollie? Maybe Fred has been recommending Matt A to Ollie?

Hmmm...Ollie is getting a one-year deal, and will be evaluated at the end of the season. If i'm Matt, i don't know if moving here would be the right next move in my career. I expect we will lose him at some point, but i think i'd wait for a coach in a better position.

The Big East isn't what it used to be. Syracuse, Pitt and ND are leaving for the ACC, while WV has moved to the Big XII. It might not be long before ISU is viewed as the more prestigious destination.

Anyone who thinks only one coach spends time recruiting a kid is an idiot.

True. However, they take their own regions and find the players that we should go after and they work hardest for those players. Cornell Mann got Percy to Dayton, then switched him to Iowa State. He also got Monte Morris. Matt A. is the northeast recruiter.

Let's take a look at the high school recruits Matt has brought in.

Sledge - transferred
Okoro - probably won't ever play much

This site is full of idiots.

Okoro has been in class for about a month. We lose something like 6 seniors after this season, yet he "probably won't ever play much."

Agreed. What an idiotic thing to say about Okoro.

Probably won't ever play much is my opinion. Why? Because after this year he will be playing behind Naz, Morris, Thomas, and Dorsey-Walker. I see him basically putting in Sledge minutes this year, and Railey minutes his Sophomore year.

***For the record, I want the best for Okoro and I would love to see him playing. I just don't think he will be a top 5 guard on Iowa State during his time here.

I think that, in this stage of the program, we need to try to keep everyone we can for at least another year or two until its fully established. I know some assistants have more key recruiting going on than others, but I still think that they're all important in the grand scheme, and he has been getting good reviews for his work.

I honestly see this as a step down. Sure, he might get a slightly better job. However, if Ollie struggles his first 2 seasons UCONN fans won't be so patient to can him which means Abdelmassih will likely be out of a job. I think he won't go and will stay here until he gets a coaching gig or lead recruiter at a big school with job security (Ohio St., Syracuse, Louisville)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but what exactly are you basing this off? Naz and Monte play completely different positions, so that's not even relevant.

SDW and Thomas have played exactly ZERO college games. In fact, Thomas hasn't even played his senior year of HS ball. SDW didn't exactly light the world on fire during the Cap City League. By all accounts, Okoro is a completely different player than SDW. Okoro is physically bigger, and it sounds like he could be an excellent defender.

I don't have any clue as to how many minutes these guys will all get relative to one another, but neither do you. SDW, Okoro and Thomas are complete unknowns at this point.
