"Sources said that if Ollie were eventually to get a long term deal with the Huskies, he would target Iowa State assistant Matt Abdelmassihas a potential lead recruiter. Abdelmassih worked with the Timberwolves when Ollie played in Minnesota and was the point man when the Cyclones signed current Houston Rockets forward Royce White. Abdelmassih also has Iowa State as a top suitor for Rashad Vaughn, the number one shooting guard in the Class of 2014."

Certainly hope not.

So would this be the position that Otz currently has on our staff? I would hope we could at least find a way to match the salary offer.

I don't think so. I think Otz does more coaching and game prep now than he did when he was lead recruiter. Experience that he needs to get if he ever wants to be a head coach. I think Matt holds the lead recruiting assistant role that Otz had when McD was coach.

Maybe it's just my cardinal colored glasses, but I would think that if he is offered by Uconn we should be able to match the offer. I would like to think that MA has some loyalty to Fred since he was the first guy to give him a shot at coaching at a D-1 school.

One would hope, especially with the condition that UCONN program is going to be in post-Calhoun.

I don't know that I agree that Matt holds the "lead" recruiting role that Otz had. While Matt seems to be solely devoted mostly to recruiting, don't forget about Cornell Mann. Mann has more experience to his name and does probably just as much recruiting, but just in a different area. It is obvious that Otz holds down the Wisconsin recruits, Matt the Minneapolis and Northeast U.S. recruits, and Mann the Michigan recruits. Matt and Mann seem more like an equal level tandem recruiting team to me than Matt as the lead recruiter. If anything, Mann may have some more superiority just due to his longer experience. While Matt is a stud, he is still very young and very new to the game.

We need to keep Matt and Otz with the Clones as long as possible...they are monster recruiters and help this team in a major way

I don't know, I think it would be hard for him to turn down if he has any inclination that he wants to be a head coach someday. He's an east coast guy and I would think if he was going to get a shot at running a program it would be one of the smaller east coast schools. I would imagine being an assistant at UConn would help him get his name out there better than being an assistant at Iowa State.

I agree that we need to keep all of them. I think our whole coaching staff has the potential to be a top 10 recruiting force in the future.

I'll bet you Fred wishes him the best of luck at his new position because we aren't in a position to offer what UConn can offer to him. There are few instances of "loyalty" when it comes to coaches. Most of them have the same goal and being 3rd in the chain of command at Iowa State doesn't accomplish much towards the goal of being a head coach someday.

that's ridiculous.

no way matt is bailing on fred.

Wait, how do we know Matt is a "monster recruiter?" I'm not saying he isn't, but he's been here nearly 3 years and his 2 HS commits have been Sledge and Okoro.

I'm guessing it would probably come down to how badly Matt wanted to get back to his native Northeast since he is originally from New York.

Frankly, I don't think anyone should look at it as disloyal if he leaves for a situation that is better for him. I'm sure Fred, like any good employer, would be disappointed personally but happy for a good employee who is bettering his situation.

What incentive does he have to stay? Otz makes a ton more money and is very well compensated for his position. Mann is the new man on campus and higher on the chain of command (as shown in his paycheck). He's just above the player development director and below the assistant head, other assistant, and the director of ops.

Like most other fields, the easiest way to move up in coaching is to move on.

All coaches do recruiting, including Fred. But when winter rolls around, I suspect that Mann will be in Ames more doing more actual prep work and coaching of the team than Matt. Even during the basketball season, Matt will still spend a majority of his time on the road recruiting. That's why I consider him the "recruiter" assistant coach.

If he doesn't want to coach in the tournament then UCONN is the place to go, the only place in the nation I can guarantee won't be in the dance next year.
