***2024 Minnesota Vikings***

Cleveland was now 2nd team OG with the Vikings behind Risner. The Vikings line has played much better since Risner took over the starting job. Cleveland is in his final year of his rookie contract. Cleveland wants to be an OT in the NFL and the Vikings already have their two OT's. At least the Vikings were able to get something.

At the end of the day after the two trades, the Vikings have acquired a QB that has started 8 games this year and a conditional 7th round pick. Overall I would say the Vikings did ok or better than ok.

the dude got beat out by FA Dalton Risner and was going to walk in FA after the season anyway (wants to be a LT not LG) and no way are we sending Darrisaw down the road.
Yeah I have a Viking fan friend who’s talking me off the ledge. “3rd day pick” is a big range though. Wait and see I guess.

Agreed. Losing Cleveland isn't going to be a big loss to the offensive line. He was settling into a role as backup these last two weeks.

I'll wait and see what the draft pick is for Cleveland, but on the surface it seems short sighted. If the FO thinks they have a run in them, then why trade your depth at a precarious position?

They likely thought they wouldn't come to a new contract agreement with Cleveland.

I'm sure that was the case, but I fall back to why trade depth if the front office thinks they have something as they keep saying. I could get on board with the idea if it was even a 4 rounder, but it sounds like this is going to be 6th or so?

The cynic in me says the front office knows this season is a bust but won't admit it.

You're getting a sixth round draft pick without having to give up one of your four allowed compensatory picks, which likely would had been a sixth round for Cleveland.

I like the trade in the sense that we needed depth and Dobbs is solid. Still would like to see what Hall has this week, but Dobbs is a better backup than Mannion

I'm sure Dobbs won't be ready to start for a couple weeks at least. Will give them time to see if Hall is decent. Dobbs isn't going to make them a contender, but a good backup or placeholder. They basically gave him up for nothing. The 7th round pick will be at the top of the 2nd round.

I think Risner started because Cleveland was dinged up.

I heard Cleveland was not happy either. He was drafted to play T and wants a chance to play tackle, so he was going to be leaving after this season anyway.

How do the compensatory picks work? Would Cleveland have even drawn a compensatory pick?

This is the current Managements 2nd season in charge of the Vikings. Management doesn't want to 'give up' on the season (and have a losing record). However, management also knows even if they do make the playoffs the team won't be making a Super Bowl run. Add value where you can without giving up draft capital. Now we can all hope that Kwesi improves his drafting ..

I believe the Vikings would have had a compensatory pick if Cleveland signed with a different team while in FA and the round of the pick is based on many factors, such as number of snaps played and salary. Someone smarter than me can correct me if I'm wrong

Sounds like he would have to be considered to be in the Top 35% of all players, but I don't know if they count that.

But his contract would also be offset by how much money the Vikes spend on FA in the offseason too.

Y’know, last summer, I kind of optimistically wondered if the Vikings had filled every position on offense going forward. I mean, aside from Cousins, long term. After all, re-signing Bradbury was a huge question mark, and what Cleveland and Ingram had going for them that they were relatively high draft picks. Letting Cook go was a gamble, drafting Addison nearly as much so.

Turns out that Bradbury looks just fine, eh? And I’m still not sure about Ingram (h gets another year), but Risner certainly seems to have sealed up a guard spot. And Addison is as good as to be hoped.

Aside from the lingering FA questions about Cousins and (now) Jefferson, the only spot on this side of the ball that seriously looks like it needs to be upgraded is RB. Seems to me that both Mattison and Akers are better off as backups. Competent, but not “carry the team” guys.

That said, I don’t mind that Cook isn’t around any longer.

If they re-sign Jefferson and Cousins, that’s fine with me—as long as neither contract is burdensome. Because championships are won with defense—and the way I look at it, the more draft picks the defense gets in ‘24, the better.
