12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread

Let's be serious.

most likely just talk and will not happen.

but if he was interested...Jamie knows what a nuclear bomb this would be in the ISU athletics. Tickets would go thru the roof along with a decent chance at winning. If Fulmer really made himself available to us....Jamie would be all over him like a cheap suit.

You don't agree recruiting to ISU is a little more difficult than usual?

Here are three reasons it is:
1) No real football tradition/poor program reputation
2) Many more losing seasons than winning
3) Ames and it's climate

Like Jim Frey, Cubs GM at the time, said when they put the lights in at Wrigley Field (in response to the argument that it was breaking tradition): "Every tradition starts sometime."

We don't have a great tradition, but every tradition starts sometime.

I just gone posting something about Fulmer in the Cotlar thread. He has a bad rep among SEC coaches. He back stabbed Johnny Majors and he comes off as one of the biggest jerks (In a league full of them) in the SEC.

He may not have run the program into the ground, but they have no talent this year. They lost to WYOMING at home. He’s not recruiting Peyton Manning caliber players anymore, and he has had players involved in off-the-field incidents as well. Looks like a guy that needs to hang it up.

If he cant recruit to Rocky Top, how is he going to recruit to Ames.

Thanks, but no thanks.

I’ll take my chances on an up-and-comer like Graham.

Wow. Just Wow. You wouldnt take a proven winner in the SEC above a young coach? Fulmer would walk in with the NAME and the respect of being a GOOD COACH. Graham would take 2-3 years to get a solid recruiting base..Fulmer, probably 1-2 years to start getting some big recruits. Plus I am sure he was recruiting up until the last moment he found out he was leaving Tennessee.

As far as being a jerk in the SEC..its a rough and tough league man, I am sure Saban, Meyer and Chizzle are jerks as well. Off the field instances? Doesnt seem to bother the UI Admin with Ferentz.

So you can pretty much throw out recruiting success from all candidates' resumes. No situation is unique to Ames.

I do agree that recruiting is more difficult but if we can hire a guy who has had success recruiting, no matter where that is, I'm all for hiring him.

Has there been any talk about Chris Petersen lately? I am hearing from a 'major' booster that he is the target. I didn't get it first person from the booster, but pretty close. I don't know if that is a booster target, or JP target, that is just what I heard.:spinny:

We have always gone for up-and-comers, and it hasn't really gotten us very far. I'd like to see what a coach who has had success at a major program could do at ISU.

Another interesting thing to think about - JP has been rumored to be in both Atlanta and Indianapolis the last couple of days.

Both locales would work as a meeting place for someone living in Knoxville...

Let's say we get Fullmer. I can only assume that given his cred, he would have a very good coaching staff to pull from. We could potentially see our next coach on that staff get developed and have some long term continuity for the program. If we win........

I think I agree. I think we (me included) too easily fall in love with the next big name candidate without really thinking about things. I'm not saying I don't want Fulmer, but if he wasn't winning with his recruits at Tenn......would he do okay here? If he had a couple of hard seasons would he go Chizik on us and leave?

I can't believe how negative Paul Clark is of Fullmer, I think he would be huge catch, if we go this route, Paul will have to hold in some feeling like he did with Chiz only to let them all out after he is gone...... Jeremy, what is your take??

Has ISU ever had a coach with a national title, then come here? I know Johnny was close to having one at Michigan - but that's the closest one I can recall - can't think of a guy that actually got one and then eventually ended up here.

Gene Chizik. I assume you mean head coach, though.

Exactly, I am almost as excited about the type of assistants he can bring in as I am him...

I'm not saying you can't recruit good athletes to Ames. I believe GC pulled a few really good ones in over the past 2 years.

But, it's going to be hard work and just because you have recruiting connections, doesn't mean kids are going to knocking down the door to comes to ISU.

what's Paul saying?
He is just saying dispite his record he has a horrible track record with the NCAA, and he thinks that it is a slap in the face to Johnny Majors for some reason, where I think if anything Johnny is maybe recruiting him a bit on our behalf. He goes on to say it would be a bad hire and he is a bad candiate to even consider.
