12/18 Official Coaching Search Thread

I see your point, but at this point we are not trying to be competitive with Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. We just need to be competitive with Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, and Nebraska. Then we can worry about being competitive with better teams.

I agree to an extent. The Big 12 North is simply not going to be nearly as good in '09 as it was in '07 and to an extent '08.

IMO, right now the thing is Nebraska's to lose - but still pretty wide open. Do I think ISU has enough talent on the team now to win the North next year? Close. If either we can add some defensive linemen or current guys really step up - possibilities are there. Non-conference schedule is setup for wins - generating momentum.

But, we played the same damn conference schedule this year and lost all of them.

If Fulmer is interested and if the guy comes here - I'd feel damn good about it. Not just his ability to coach and track record (hello, my name is Phillip Fulmer and I have a national title...anyone still wanna leave?) - but also I'd think the guy aught to bring in some nifty assistants.

If we can still pay 'em by giving a contract to Fulmer.

I'd have to think boosters would put more zeros on those checks for this guy.

Yesterday there was a long thread on what would be a modern-day "Johnny Orr" hire for football...

hiring Fulmer would be as close as it'd come, in my opinion.

I agree........I cannot begin to state all of the positive things I think about this. My wife was laughing at me when we heard the news, because we weren't near a computer, and that was killing me.

I don't think Fulmer would require a massive amount of money

I don't think he is going to job hop to anywhere else any time soon.

It gives our program and recruiting instant credibility. (a national championship under his belt!)

It makes a splash nationally.

Go get him Jamie!

Edit- not to mention, he would attract some really good coordinators as well. AND he will appreciate the hell out of Cyclone fans after being run out of Tennessee.

I will admit that I would suppor the hire of Fulmer for the most part. My biggest concern is who his assistants will be. He has always seemed to generate defenses that are capable of being very good. Yet his offenses seem to suffer if the right coordinator is not there. That is my largest concern, who he brings in to tutor Arnaud, coach the line and generate some points.

Past that, I think it would be a great hire.

Again, big if, yet if there is some credibility to this...

Has ISU ever had a coach with a national title, then come here? I know Johnny was close to having one at Michigan - but that's the closest one I can recall - can't think of a guy that actually got one and then eventually ended up here.

No matter how much talent he got every year at UT, it is nearly impossible to go undefeated these days. If losing 2-3 games in the SEC East is a bad season then I would take that any day. Going up against the likes of Florida and Georgia on a year in year out basis is not an easy task. To come out on top every now and then with that schedule is amazing.

Recruiting to TN is a lot different than recruiting to ISU. Would PF be able to work his recruiting magic in Ames?

That being said, I'd be on board with his hire.

So how do you measure recruiting success if you have to convert it to "recruiting in ames" every time? This guy has a proven track record of recruiting and winning.

Remember this one guy he recruited......Peyton Manning?

Phil Fulmer - 1992-08 - 152-52..... Very good

Ok, i regret making the ground comment. He just had a bad few years.

A few bad years? In his grand total of 17 years at Tennessee the guy had 2 losing seasons - once in 2005, once this year. The problem with Tennessee is that 9-10 win seasons and New Years Day bowls aren't good enough for them - they want BCS bowls and championships. Man oh man I wish one day as a Cyclone fan I could have unreasonable expectations such as those...

I just gone posting something about Fulmer in the Cotlar thread. He has a bad rep among SEC coaches. He back stabbed Johnny Majors and he comes off as one of the biggest jerks (In a league full of them) in the SEC.

He may not have run the program into the ground, but they have no talent this year. They lost to WYOMING at home. He’s not recruiting Peyton Manning caliber players anymore, and he has had players involved in off-the-field incidents as well. Looks like a guy that needs to hang it up.

If he cant recruit to Rocky Top, how is he going to recruit to Ames.

Thanks, but no thanks.

I’ll take my chances on an up-and-comer like Graham.

I think a more recent comparison if we got Fulmer would be Tubby Smith coming in for the Gophers. Resume, flamed out at a traditional power, the mid-south-east region of the country (maybe a reach on that last one).

(hello, my name is Phillip Fulmer and I have a national title...anyone still wanna leave?)

You think that could also be his recruiting line?

"Hello, my name is Phillip Fulmer and I have a national title... still considering Baylor, aTm, OSU, Arkansas, TCU, Miss St, Missouri, Kansas, K-State, Iowa, etc...?"

I think he could EASILY pull in ISU's first ever 5-star recruit.

You don't agree recruiting to ISU is a little more difficult than usual?

Here are three reasons it is:
1) No real football tradition/poor program reputation
2) Many more losing seasons than winning
3) Ames and it's climate

And there it is - take your chances.

As I said in that thread, all coaches are going to come with some level of risk. I think looking at everything, Fulmer is one that comes with the least risk as far as his ability to win/recruit.

I have no idea if he is the guy for ISU - but I do know he's a damn good option.

In part, the guy is recruiting guys to ISU.

In part, the guy is recruiting guys to a national championship coach that has placed tons of people in the NFL. He's going to be out there making that point, if he comes here, and he's the only one in the North that can make that entire case.

He could recruit here. Someone mentioned recruiting Peyton Manning. He recruited a guy with a family legacy to Ole Miss, whose dad is a legend there, to leave that place, and face the wrath of their passionate SEC fans, and go to Tennessee.

I don't think recruiting is a real problem.

He can win on the road, at places tougher than the Big XII North will throw at him.

I'm not bandwagon-jumping here, but it's an interesting discussion.

Recruiting may be tougher in Ames but the guy has great ties and great respect from everybody. I don't think he would have much of a problem recruiting based on his name alone. The kids would say "where's this Iowa State place? Oh well I'm playing for one of the greatest college coaches in the game today or possibly in history". As far as having a few bad seasons I disagree. He went 10-4 last year and 9-4 the year before. So his two losing seasons were this year 5-7 (i would have took 5 wins this year) and he was 5-6 in 2005. Other than that he won 9 or 10 games consistantly. You have to go to 2002 to find a season other than the two losing seasons where he won less than 9 games. This guy is a proven winner and everybody in Cyclone nation should be on board if he truly is interested. A hire like this could be what gets some big donors opening up their checkbooks.
