not sure if this has been posted yet, but Dienhart from Rivals.com is saying Gill is probably a front-runner. He also posted these names as potentials:
Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst
Tulsa coach Todd Graham
St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney
Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill
Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson
Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley
Long-shot targets could be East Carolina's Skip Holtz and TCU's Gary Patterson

I think Patterson turned down KSU because he was pissed that it got leaked. If it wouldn't have been leaked, I think he would have been KSU's new head coach.

My point was, fans felt we could not get Gene and we did. I'll let Pollard decide if he thinks we can land Gary or not.

And if it happens I'll be one of the very first to admit that I was wrong and Pollard will get all the praise in the world from me (not that he doesn't get praised on virtually every decision he's made while he's been here).

Like I said, I love the idea of Patterson being here. I just can't see it happening. Then again, that's also why ISU's not paying me the big bucks to try and make something like this happen...

I don't understand what this means. Do people actually think that Auburn thought a black guy was the best for the job but decided against it solely because of race?:biglaugh:

You obviously have not spent much time in the deep South. I could very much see Auburn boosters putting pressure on AD because Gill is black and is married to a white woman.

I grew up in Iowa and never understood racism until I lived South of the Mason Dixon line. In many parts of the South today african Americans are still very much treated like 2nd class citizens.

Would you take a job in the Big ten to play Michigan, Mich State, and Iowa or would you, being located in texas, take a job in the Big 12?

That is like asking if you would rather have a Cjhiziack commerative coin or a hoagie.

the big thing about patterson's recruiting for me, is he already deals with taking texas/oklahoma left overs. Which is pretty much all we are used to getting here. He may even have a upper hand in that category compared to other coaches

I think the point is that when we hired him, Chizik was a hot coaching commodity. That's the parallel.

I don't think it's exactly parallel. Patterson was an established coach who could pick and choose his job two years ago. Although a highly respected coach, Chizik wasn't going to get any job he wanted two years ago.

That being said, yeah, Chizik was a longshot for him to come here, and Pollard made that happen. If anyone could convince Patterson to leave everything and come to Ames it would be Pollard. I guess I just don't see the motivation.

Probably true. I lived in Georgia and Virginia and the blacks are treated better up North. In fact, the closer you get to Detroit, the better they have it. This is a positive recruiting feature for us.

Those leftovers run 4.5 40s.

Pollard said that the fans absolutely should get the coach they deserve. It tells me, Pollard is not going to aim low or even mid-level this time around. He's going to go "big". I think guys like Patterson and Gill fit that bill or are very close to it. Huge would be Tubberville. Or Ditka, naturally. ;)

This hire is huge for Pollard, it's gotta work. Can't really risk that on a coordinator. Not saying I would not support some of the names I've seen that are coordinators - but I doubt that's the route Jamie wants to go here.

If Pollard did not make a serious run at Patterson and Gill, I'd be very disappointed in him. I doubt that will be the case.

One item to think about with Gary Patterson is he was one of your top candidates a couple years ago as well as one of our top candidates when we hired Bo. For some reason he was not hired at either place whether that means he was not interested or the two hires just were better selections its food for thought. And that does not mean I wish we had taken him over Bo. I think Bo is doing a great job. Just wondered if something about Patterson does not come across well when interviewed.

Nobody interviews like Gene Chizik. That's what it looks like to me.
