I don't understand what this means. Do people actually think that Auburn thought a black guy was the best for the job but decided against it solely because of race?:biglaugh:
The local sports station in College Station was talking about Auburn on the ride home last night. They said that Auburn has a "T. Boone Pickens"-type donor that pretty much runs the show there. In the past, he has met with coaches without the AD's knowledge to try to get them to come to Auburn. They said he did that with Petrino a few years ago.

Also, remember that Patterson didn't go to K-State the last time either, whent they hired Prince. This would be twice one of their former people "turned them down".

I think we hire the guy solely based on that!

Patterson turned down a job offer from Minnesota worth over $2 million per year to stay at TCU

I guess that's the thing with Patterson for me. The guy has turned down two schools, that at least at this point in time, are more ideal situations than Iowa State. What's his motivation to come here?

Clearly the TCU gig is better than the Iowa State gig, as it seems on any given year TCU is usually 1 win away from going to a BCS bowl. And if that's not enough, I'm pretty convinced that by the time 2014 rolls around the MWC is going to be a BCS conference, as either the 7th conference or in lieu of the Big East.

I'm not saying I don't think Patterson would be a good hire - I think it'd be a great hire. I just can't comprehend it happening.

Similar things were said of Gene Chizik. We all thought we couldn't get him. Somewhat different situation, but the fan outlook on it was the same.

Patterson would be a bigger coup d'etat than Chizik was, imo. A proven head coach, who nearly went to the BCS, and has an arguably easier road to that (run the table in MWC and you're in). I hate to say this, but to come to ISU he would be taking AT BEST a lateral move, and probably a step down. Obviously he'd be in the local spot light more, here in Iowa, and we keep hearing about his wife's ties to ISU. This would be very similar to the old Johnny Orr hire, really.

While I think Patterson would be a great hire...I agree with your post. Not sure why he would be attracted to ISU?

When comparing the resume's of Patterson and Gill - I think the only edge Gill has on Patterson is BCS conference experience.

I can see great cases made for either guy to be our next coach.

They both seem like they'd be very good. I can't get myself to jump off of the Gill bandwagon, but there's no way I'd be disappointed in Patterson. I'd like to learn more about the guy at Tulsa whose name I forget.

Considering that TCU is in the heart of the Dallas Metroplex, one of the most talent rich environments in the country, Patterson has a lot of incentive to stay.

I'm assuming that the choice of a coach has to have the same waiting period as that for the coordinators did, due to Affirmative Action guidelines (ISU receives federal money, therefore we have to play by the rules--or at least go through the motions).

I think Patterson turned down KSU because he was pissed that it got leaked. If it wouldn't have been leaked, I think he would have been KSU's new head coach.

That's funny!!!

I think the difference is the scenarios are completely different. Patterson is an established, well-respected coach that can pretty much at this point pick which job he wants. Chizik, on the other hand, is a once-hot coaching commodity that only Auburn apparently considers a great hire at this point...

My point was, fans felt we could not get Gene and we did. I'll let Pollard decide if he thinks we can land Gary or not.

Patterson looks like a great recruiter as well. He already has 4, 4* for this years class. If we do somehow land him, I wonder if any would follow him up here? That would be a nice surprise.

One clear asset that Pollard has in his job search--at least the prospective coaches know that Iowa State is such a good job that even if they only win five games in two years, they can still double their paycheck at a bigger school. Now that's a prestige job!

Seriously, one thing that prospective coaches always look at is returning talent--is there enough talent on hand that they can be successful immediately? That determines how receptive they are to overtures from the AD. I'm thinking that with Austen, Bo, Scott, Darius, Alexander, and all of the other offensive talent coming back, plus all of those seniors on defense, that some reasonably high profile coach is going to be interested in coaching these guys, and putting his name on the wins they're going to be earning.
