Would you take a job in the Big ten to play Michigan, Mich State, and Iowa or would you, being located in texas, take a job in the Big 12?

That is like asking if you would rather have a Cjhiziack commerative coin or a hoagie.

At this point in time I'd still take the Chizik commemorative coin - do you realize just how much scrap gold is going for right now? $838.50/oz. That's a lot of hoagies...

That's what I'm getting at. If he's looking in that direction, would he want to return to the college game right now?

Would we want a guy that, if this is the case, clearly wants to leave and go to the NFL?

If the guy came here and did what Gene did, but instead, actually won football games....

I'd shake his hand, say thanks a bunch and wish him luck. And then Pollard could go get us an even better prospect.

not sure if this has been posted yet, but Dienhart from Rivals.com is saying Gill is probably a front-runner. He also posted these names as potentials:
Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst
Tulsa coach Todd Graham
St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney
Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill
Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson
Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley
Long-shot targets could be East Carolina's Skip Holtz and TCU's Gary Patterson

Didn't know Wisconsin had an offense.

I agree TCU is essentially a lateral at this point. He does have an easier path to the BCS, but he'd get his mug on TV more in the Big 12 than the MWC. Regular season plus potential conference championships. Our attendance is a lot better than TCU's. LINK Plus he'll always play third fiddle to Texas and A&M down there. He could be king here if he wins.

Who knows, I would still lob him a call. I bet of ANY coach hired this year he will be more successfull 5 years down the road than any of them...

Now that the Chiefs are making changes maybe he would eventually end up there? I don't know if the elder schot still has good things to say about KC.

Probably better things at this point than he's got to say about "the Whale's Vagina"...

#1 choice for who? If you read the site, Patterson seemed to be at the top for many or near the top for most.

Pollard stated when Chizik was hired, we got our #1 guy from the start - so in that respect, Patterson wasn't #1. I'm curious if he was even interviewed by Pollard.

In reading those old threads (seriously, do a search for Patterson and go to page 7ish on the results), anytime the plane was in Texas - Patterson was the name CF members brought up - along with Chizik.

Somewhere in this whole mess I seem to recall Chizik being refered to as our second choice. Maybe I'm incorrect.

If that was ever said, it contradicts what was said at the press conference introducing Chizik. 22 is right--I can specifically remember Pollard saying at that presser that Chizik was always his first choice for the job.

Some say that Brian Kelley was the first choice. But he leaked info to the press and Pollard didn't like it. So Chizik was the hire. Chizik was worth the risk IMO. He just didn't seem to have an organized sideline during games. His clock management was terrible. He was obviously learning to be a HC. And at ISU we have very little margin for error. Would he have eventually gotten the job done? IDK. It obviously was very difficult for him to run his system without having the talent differential in his favor. And he showed that even with superior talent he could lose games that he shouldn't.

There are sources that believe Pollard offered Brian Kelley and that Kelley was not willing to decide within Pollard's timetable - so the offer went to Chizik.

Pollard stated in the press conference, press release and in quotes after - that Chizik was the #1 guy all along.

So it could be...

- The sources are incorrect.
- Chizik was #1, Pollard did not feel he would accept after talking to him, offered Kelley and then went back to Chizik.
- Pollard was not 100% truthful.

To this date, I have been given absolutely no reason to believe Jamie Pollard would lie or mislead the fans.

Pollard did say that. But what is he supposed to say? My first choice was Brian Kelley. But he leaked it to the press and it pissed me off so I am taking Gene Chizik? Only Pollard knows for sure. This time it is most important to get the right guy and not worry so much about the element of surprise.

That would be my theory. He had to figure that he was shooting the moon with Chizik, and Kelley was his backup plan (who doesn't have a legitimate backup plan?). He decides to go with Kelley, convinced he's not going to get Chizik, even though he's not the first option. Kelley then blows Pollard's timetable, and Pollard pulls the offer. At this point Pollard's working on option #3. But the funny thing about shooting for the moon is sometimes you hit. Mack Brown talks Chizik into accepting the offer, and Chizik bites. Pollard shocks everyone in the nation (and even awes a few) by announcing that he hires his #1 guy. End of story (or so we wished).

I think between Patterson and Gill, Patterson would be most likely to stay around for awhile due to his commitment shown at TCU to this point.

If it goes wrong, Pollard knows that this will most likely be his last major decision at Iowa State, so he's going to aim high. Unfortunately, those coaches still have to want to come here. IMO, if we hire another hot assistant coaching commodity, it means some of the top names weren't interested.
