In memoriam of Brian Ferentz as Iowa's OC

This hire was to make BF look better.
Exactly. Kirk wants no part of a high-powered offense that makes his boy look bad for the last few years. He'll gladly take his chance at winning 10 games again against another pretty weak schedule with a good defense and not turning the ball over. Next year will be identical to the last 2, and Kirk will probably hang it up after that.

To be fair, those numbers would be a massive improvement over the last two seasons.
Lol - I saw this today and it is hilarious.

To me, it shows Iowa could not find ANYONE who wanted this job. I have to think this was like their 20th choice. Would be career suicide to go there and take that job. No freedom to implement a system, a coach who's on the 18th hole. It is a terrible job objectively.

They had a golden opportunity to hire an absolute stud by guaranteeing him the head coaching spot in a year if they were smart.

Think this is a little closer...

It's funny, it seems like casual fans seem over the moon with the hire (reddit lol) mostly because it's an external hire, but I come here and see the Hawkeye fans that comment here are not thrilled and national writers somehow less so.

I said it earlier, the only reason to take it, would be to get the inside track on the HC job once KF decides to retire.

IDK this guy. I generally like coordinators that didn't make it as head coaches. Usually means the Peter Principle in action - great coordinator, but not quite good enough to be a successful HC. Not always, but usually.

That said, its entirely possible KF hired someone he could dominate, who wouldn't upset the apple cart with anything new, and who wouldn't make Brain look bad. Here's hoping!

I think Chryst was the best Kirk could do given his age and offensive parameters. After that it really wasn’t going to be a great hire.
And he wasn’t going to take a shot on some young up and coming guy. I don’t see how either of the finalist is going to fit what Kirk wants to do.
Lester ran spread offenses,
Shotgun and heavy RPO. That’s not Kirk and I don’t think he will change so unclear how this guy is going to do making a different offense than what he runs.

I would have preferred Johns, but what the hell do I know about OC's

In six years as Western Michigan’s coach, Lester went 37-32. From 2018-21, Lester supervised an offense that ranked in the top 35 nationally in total offense each year.

Weren’t those the years that the MAC was putting up video game type offense? I seem to remember a lot of 49-63 type games on Tuesday nights. Is a top 35 offense really impressive in a league like that?

How many other Big 10 schools would have hired Lester as OC?
The funniest hok comments were defending Iowa to beating out Troy, saying that Troy has a good football program and worthy competition for Iowa to get Lester.

It's truly incredible that it took 3 months to hire a guy that wasn't even a blip on the radar of any other school. Like they literally just started scouring the phone books begging for someone to take it.
