Ya I guess I am, as Chris William posted on twitter, he asked 3 people, and while it was the correct call, they have never see it called. I just remember all the times a call just like this went against ISU, the UT game where the officials gave them a TD at the end of the game when we came out with the ball and were sprinting down the field. The call against us verses WV where Breece scored, and they called it a fumble. There are plenty more out there and we all know it.

Do I love that it happened verses EIU, sure I do, but for us as a fanbase to pretend that it while the correct call was not a shaky call is beyond crazy.
You never see that called in a game, but they did yesterday, they called it right, even though they never call it.

I remember it called against ISU several times. Usually the refs stop it right away so it isn't memorable as there is no score. I think the fact the ball hit the ground was the difference and the reason the officials let the play go and then reviewed.

OK rarely called then, I hate rules like this that are rarely called and then they pull it out and called then call it.

Its rarely called because it rarely happens.

But I have seen an invalid fair catch called several times.

The only issue is most times when someone is waving like this and waving players off, they do not attempt to advance the ball. This is notable because he tried to wave off people then decided to grab the ball and run. You cant do that, by rule. Its not a penalty, so its not part of the penalties that can be reviewed. Its similar to a ball spot etc. They can check where a ball goes dead and why, they can review spots, they can review plays for out of bounds, catches fumbles, ball spots, ALL TD PLAYS, all plays in last 2 mins of half. NO penalty was called or assessed just that the ball was dead and to be spotted at location of said dead ball.

But I have seen the call, when they do. Again I believe it was called in recent years at an ISU game, just dont know exactly when.

You really need to get off the idea that it was some anomaly. That there was anything wrong with the way it was called, or that it was incorrect in any way. Because it was 100% right and called correct.

This is the point that is crushing to Iowa fans. You will hear them say “if we had a semi-competent offense we’d be competing for national championships.” No. You. Wouldn’t. They do have a very good defense and have put a lot of guys in the NFL. But they do not have an elite defense. They just benefit greatly from playing against a bad offense 10 or 11 games every year.

Underrated post. I bet their defensive stats and rankings would slide quite a bit if they played in the Big 12

Also on some calls where you might want to have it reviewed, it is better to let the play play out because if you stop the play you can't fix the error afterwards and you just screwed them out of a potential return. Same reason they will generally lean towards letting a questionable fumble play play out and let review take a look at it.

Pretty sure the quote from the referee said they saw it on the field and wanted to review it to be sure

Since replay became common, this is precisely why a situation like yesterday happens……Referees don’t want to blow the whistle and stop play knowing that if they let it play out, they have the safety net of replay to bail them out and give them a second chance at getting the call right if they missed something in real time.

Then the infamous “call on the field” comes into play and becomes the legit call until there is indisputable video evidence to reverse the call. I would be curious as to the statistics of how often the call is upheld “confirmed” vs. overturned.

Yeah, because just like when they pelted the pregnant lady on Barstools set, they will deny it ever happened and deny it ever does.

There are several regular posters on here that flat out denied they do or did such a thing, even when there is video evidence. Then when you proved it, they came back with "well they deserved it".

But but but.... you bumped into one of our band members... in a mass packed crowd, that said band went against directions and rammed into said packed crowd. Is what they usually come back with.

Kinda funny watching the meltdown on TV 13 Soundoff . Murphy dutifully started with the penalty talk, but since then it's pretty much been about how terrible the offense is. Sears and Fales really came after them to the point I bet they pissed off the Iowa AD.

He's actually been pretty rational and spot on lately, I'll give him credit.

Miller has been really good on the Iowa Everywhere podcasts. He was a douche in his KXNO days and worse when he got the brief TV deal. He admitted it in one of the early podcasts and even talked openly about how as he leaned into the combative, defensive Hawk talk guy for media it negatively impacted his personal life. He is a really good listen, and I'm happy for him he turned things around personally.

Listen to Dolph's radio call, he doesn't say DeJean "pranced" over to the ball, he says he waved his guys off. Then Dolph repeated it after he got to the endzone. I'm baffled that people still think this call is anything but 100% correct.

It's rarely called because the situation that necessitates the call rarely happens.

Plus it is never “called” because it gets blown dead typically. You see invalid fair catch signals a fair number of times. PR catches or fields a punt after doing something similar, starts running, it gets blown dead, PR looks around confused, and they move to the next play. Then they show a replay and it looks like something similar.

There is nothing interesting about this call at all except they let it play out and how a return would’ve impacted the game.
