49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Wow that's brutal. You were costing Brock games like that? Unreal.

You have no idea how many ways ISU has found ways to lose over the yrs. It takes a lot of fortitude to be a ISU fan year in and year out. But we are a faithful and loyal bunch though game threads don't always show that.

LOL what the f*ck wasn't, FG kickers that couldn't hit long or short, one yr playing Iowa the punt return unit let the ball bounce off their helmets, the 2nd guy ran into the 1st and Iowa recovered on a short field and wins.
For all of Campbell's talk of winning the margins his special teams have been sad.
Most yrs our damn kicker couldn't even kick it into the end zone.

That's interesting. I didn't know that.

Feels like his receivers are always wide open.
You watch any of the qb school breakdowns? From yesterdays game heshighlighting Brock’s anticipation.

I do not credit the staff for Purdy’s development at Iowa State. I think it’s one of their bigger failures to be quite honest. He regressed in a number of areas at different points of his career, and plenty of NFL folks that focus on the data/metrics/analytics have essentially noted that the longer he played in college, the less they liked him as a pro prospect. Then in literally ONE summer with the 9’ers (and a private throwing coach), he instantly made noise on an NFL roster. They couldn’t cut him! He was suddenly THAT good.

The real reason he was the 262nd pic? Because there was no evidence to justify him being drafted earlier. Hundreds of scouts and high level football minds didn’t “miss” on Purdy in the draft process. NO ONE on draft night predicted (or could have foreseen) his RAPID offseason development, i.e. his mechanics, his mental focus on scheme, route concepts, anticipation, etc. That credit goes to Purdy and his commitment to push himself hard and accept the criticism/training/changes required, and kudos to the 9’ers organization for pushing all the right buttons from there on.

As good as he was at Iowa State, he could have been even more impactful.
biggest fix in his game is his feet and throwing base. Brock always saw it, except for the annual Sept lazy gift pick six in the flat, but he rarely threw from a solid base.

I don't watch much of the McAfee show. Does AJ always just sit their awkwardly for 90% of the show? Why do they always have him on screen when Pat never shuts up? Seems like every clip I see is like that.
Sometimes he very meticulously smokes a cigar

Nope. 9 TD, 0 INT. Only he and CJ Stroud (7TD) have more than 2 passing TDs and 0 INT on the year
Ya but what about almost/should of been interceptions?

jimlad you savages.
Wasn't it the 2nd game of the season people were talking about that like it mattered? I laughed hard at those takes.
Meanwhile Mahomes is throwing picks that almost/should have been interceptions, that were interceptions and crickets, it seems. He doesn't get critized for it as much for actually throwing the picks.

This will all be fine for Brock, because it will make him even more focused, out to prove himself, every game.

I've said many times he's doing a good job. I'm not gonna call him a top tier QB just because he went to ISU though. He's had a great year. Gotta prove he can do that consistently from year to year before you put anyone in that category. Just because I don't think Purdy is as good as Mahomes doesn't mean I think Brock sucks or I don't hope he does well. I mean I don't go out of my way to watch SF or anything.
Purdy ******* sucks.
You seem to have conflicting thoughts on Purdy...

We do need to credit Campbell and ISU for the development of Brock though. Sure they (ISU staff) limited Brock at times, no doubt. It was a juggling act to play him conservatively and try to keep him healthy, jada, jada, vs. let him maybe run more by design, etc.

Also, we need to credit Brock for continuing to work on his craft. He is better now than he was 2 years ago, at ISU. And that was pretty good then. His arm is stronger now. He went to FL and worked with a QB coach there who has really helped with his throwing motion and velocity.

I won't try to argue pro/con about your points here. I will leave that to the FB purists out there that know far more than I. I understand your post though and I realize there are folks who feel like we (ISU coaching) might have stunted the growth of certain players/positions through the years, and to your points, Campbell specifically as coach.

True or not, and to what degree of developmental growth or lack thereof, let's hope the staff is taking steps to improve on. This will be the key going forward. I think that what I am learning at least, this year, is that Iowa State needs to play more like we have in the past 3 weeks (the high points anyway), and less like we have in the previous games this season and in recent years past. We do that, we will make progress and be successful.

My hope is that we have finally reached a tangible learning curve here, that we have to keep our edge, play with a scheme and play calling, coaching style that keeps the opponent guessing and more aggressively tries to score.

That said, I feel this staff has a certain scheme and style of ball control that they 'want' to play. Wanting an being successful in that wanted scheme are sometimes two different things. We'll see how things go the next few years.

Should be interesting. Hopefully a 'good' interesting.

Watching the film breakdowns I’m not sure what I’m more impressed with: Brock’s ability to read the defense pre-snap, his decision making/anticipation or his footwork. His footwork is immaculate, he’s in great position ready to rip so fast that the pass rush usually doesn’t have a chance to get home.

Yes, he makes a few high level throws a game for sure but his guys get open a lot. Not saying that means anything about Brock specifically. That offense is ridiculous though.

I know you are a Cowboys fan, but assuming you are also an ISU fan it's OK to talk about how great Purdy is doing without constantly adding qualifying statements. I know he's the QB for the niners, but you are allowed a dispensation in this case.

I do say nice things about him. I have said he's been good many times, far before this game. His day will come where he has his struggles. That's when we will find out how good he is going to be. He's blown expectations out of the water so far. He still hasn't even played a full season yet so it's hard to know what will happen. I'm just not ready to ride the hype like some are in here, admittedly that's partly because I hate the 9ers.

After that happened we basically stopped returning punts for 3 seasons.
That same game we had a guy return a kickoff from about 3 yards deep in the end zone and he got to about the 15, then I think there was a penalty which made us start from about the 7. We went 3 and out and then shanked a punt and Iowa started around the 30 yard line. If I remember right that set up their go ahead touchdown. And we basically stopped returning kicks for 3 seasons (in addition to punts).
