Iowa Beat Writers

I apologize if I'm derailing the thread, but the quote was "development can take place after college with someone like Purdy" in comparison to Cade. I guess I'm rejecting it out of hand.

Purdy is Purdy and that didn't change from college to pro. Some minor tweaks here and there, but it's not like he was drafted as a project (not developed in college) that has now become this pro machine. Purdy was drafted last because of his measurables - height, arm strength, etc. They're just not what NFL would like. On the plus side, he was drafted (at all) because he had experience, accuracy, good decision making and just has that gamer/it factor.

Cade would be drafted (if he's drafted at all) because he has measurables and good decision making. Iowa can't really take that away from him. They're not doing him any favors at all though.

I guess I'm saying that if you're making the argument that Purdy is a good example of development post-college, that's a really bad example. Honestly, it's a take that I'd expect for some national talking-head that never watched Purdy in college.

I'm trying to think of a college QB that was a project that turned out well and I'm coming up empty - probably because I don't follow the NFL all that much. I'd guess that other positions have more success at project players.
Cade is the same size as Rocco. I don’t think measurables are helping him haha. Moot point because he won’t sniff professional football but still.

Kirk not being able to develop and evaluate the OL will be his downfall and I not see that coming.
Still don’t understand why Doyle took all the heat for Kirk. He has to be paying him under the table. Or Kirk told him he could find employment for him, then afterwards told Doyle that not being employable due to being a racist was a blind spot for him.

Yep…. and not one single good home game this year either. I have no idea how they conned so many people into buying season tickets this season?

So you don't think the going rate for a CFP QB is at least 600K? because I can tell you, it's usually a lot more than that.
Not doubting that, but I would guess that his Swarm deal is nowhere close to that. I'm guessing a lot of that comes from outside sources and actual NIL deals. But the thing is that no one really knows what these players are getting because it isn't public knowledge.

Bingo! Cade will still have the last word here folks.

Iowa is 3-1, and don’t have a single tough game on their schedule outside of maybe Wisky, who is down this year however.

Iowa will likely win 10 games, 9 at worst. I don’t understand why everyone is freaking out? KF and Cade will still have the last laugh….. even though Iowa isn’t very good at all.
They will have the next laugh, but not the last laugh. Iowa will yet again be exposed as the fake ID of college football after they are destroyed in the B1G Championship game and their January bowl game.

Doyle and Freerents are best friends, at least as coaches, Doyle was there from the start and I would bet like you said, Freerents said, "take the buy-out, and in a year, I will use my contacts to get you another job." Remember that Doyle was hired by Carolina or Jacksonville, and then when word got out, they had to pull back the offer.

It really would not have benefitted Doyle to go after EIU and Freerents, coaching is a small fraternity, and if you burn bridges at one school, others will not hire you. Its why coaches that know that other programs are cheating rarely turn them in, because they know that if word gets out it was them, it could jeopardize them getting a new job down the road.

Without a doubt, Doyle and Freerents are not sending Xmas cards to each other these days.

Purdy does own just about every ISU QB record, so he did pretty good in college. Brock is in the perfect situation.... does not have to put the team on his back, great players surrounding him, and a great coach. He still has a lot to learn, but he is definitely is the right place to grow as a QB without all the pressure.
I’d say as the QB of a Super Bowl favorite he has a lot of pressure-he just seems to handle it well.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird the last 3 years Petras had been getting destroyed by the media but this year they seem to be defending McNamara who’s been worse than Petras ever was?
Petras cost them nothing, McNamara ate up most of their NIL it sounds so they have to cozy up to him or be embarrassed. Maybe they should have spent that money on Proctor instead of Cade?

I think everyone was expecting McNamara to be this big upgrade, but so far, he looks like Petras continued.

We were just talking about that at work the other day. I'm not saying Petras was great but Iowa offense and o-line absolutely broke him mentally.

The Ferentz family LOVED Petras, and it is understandable. Last year when the offense was doing nothing and getting embarrassed, who had to go out and face the media and who didn't? Petras went out and shouldered a large amount of blame and answered questions. Brian Ferentz seemed to be hiding under dad's desk until the media left; he never came out to atone for what he was responsible for.

McNamara is average at best, and many EIU fans thought that he would be not only great, but would be someone like Barrow's was at LSU. Dropping dimes on the DP's, opening up the run game and they would challenge Ohio State and Michigan.

Losing the TE for the season has not helped, but McNamara outside of the first quarter of the first game, has looked average to below average, and not like a 4 star recruit ready to break out and tame the conference.

I am not so sure the Freerents loved Petras as much as once the decision was made, he was never going to change his mind, because he hates being second guessed. Freerents was making comments like Petras gives us the best chance to win, and he looks the best in practice. Freerents wants control, he makes all the decisions and therefore is going to do things the way he wants it done. Which means do not turn the ball over, stay in the pocket and take a sack, do not change the play, do what we are telling you what to do, and Petras went along with the program, because he was starting.

Most coaches would have modernized their offense, EIU is playing the same way they were 20 years ago, the game has changed, and Freerents refuses to change at EIU. But he wins enough to get away from it, and many older EIU fans remember the time before Fry, and are unwilling to risk firing him and starting over. They are very content to go along with the thought, that "no one ever asks who you beat, just how many you beat."

But, as I've said before, McNamara doesn't have to be great. He just has to be better than Petras. The few Iowa games I saw last year Petras made good reads he just couldn't get the ball to the open receiver. Realistic Iowa fans know that they just need McNamara to be complete those throws, to be great in a few games, and then let defense and special teams beat the bad teams. Thus far, in his first big test against PSU, McNamara couldn't do it. This week against Sparty he just has to be average and Iowa walks away with a victory. He is still going to lead them to 10 wins. He will need to be great in the championship game, and I have my doubts.

I agree that he just has to be average to above, but the EIU defense is not as good as last year, and they are not taking away the ball and scoring points like they have in the past, putting even more pressure on the offense to come through.

When was the last time the EIU offense drove the ball down the field against a quality opponent late in the game to win it? Its been years, the best thing about EIU is the weak schedule, throw them into the East side of the Big Easy and they are an 8-4 team.

I still think the biggest problem with Iowa's offense is the OL. Prior to 2020, Iowa's offense while not great was still decent enough for Iowa's style of play. Even the COVID year they put up points, but I'm not counting that since it was such a weird year all around. Since 2021, the OL has fallen off a lot and it has been non-existent these past two years. The only QBs that would be successful with this OL is someone who is very mobile, and obviously Cade isn't that guy at the moment.
