***CFB Transfer Portal 2022-23 thread***

I know everyone wants us to revamp our OL and bring in 3-5 OL transfers, but Campbell feels very good about the talent we currently have in the OL room.

We are being aggressive in the portal, they just have to be the right fit for us and the culture within those walls. Don’t be surprised if we add one more transfer to this class on the defensive side of the ball
Also just about every program wants OL help so you are battling so many more teams and they go quickly or have plenty of offers to explore.

I'd wager to bring in who they have, they have been & will continue to be very aggressive. The competition for those who have transferred in has been intense & only increased the past couple years.
When I say aggressive I mean volume of guys. They are going to be aggressive in upgrading talent and filling holes where needed but I don't think they're going to try and grab a bunch of transfer guys.

I have no source, reason, or info...but my guess would be that the chance of Will returning is 0%.
I would agree with that 100%, but that fact that we haven't heard anything yet, that has me slightly optimistic. He didn't have a great statistical season this past season. That is because he was the game plan for opposing teams, but still...

I don’t know…a lot of this transfer hype seems like a big nothing burger, especially for non-blue blood schools. I’m talking strictly football here.

Let’s face it: most of the guys that transfer out are guys that haven’t seen much playing time. Most of the guys we get in either are coming from a P5 where they didn’t do a whole lot at their old school, or they’re decent guys from a smaller school and unproven at this level. It almost feels like I’m watching a glorified garage sale: most teams are just trading mediocre/unhappy players among themselves and it doesn’t really move the needle much for anybody 99% of the time. Good players will get taken care of by their respective schools with NIL to keep them from leaving (or they go to the NFL). Mediocre or unknown players- they get the ‘ol ‘we wish [insert player name here] the best and are grateful for his time here’ speech.

Sure, there are the occasional big transfers here and there, and they seldom go to non-blue bloods…I guess I’m over the transfer hype and if I’m CMC, would pay about zero attention to the annual rummage sale known as the transfer portal.

I think it’s fun as a fan to speculate that this new player is going to come to our school and suddenly learn how to play college football after not really doing much at his old school- but again, not moving the needle from what I’m seeing.
I mean we had MJ Anderson who rarely played ay Minnesota, but played extremely well for us, and at times was the best player on our Defense. Also we had Reeder, but he was a multiple year starter, and I think Will McLaughlin played better then him down the stretch. Stanley was our 3rd best target last season as well.

If you can go out and get 3 starters for yourself, I think that is a no brainer!

So we're just gonna sit here and say guys like X, Isheem, Anderson, and Petteway werent good gets?

And if we're gonna be the Fran McCafferys of the football world at Iowa State, how are we upgrading talent on the offense then? You really want to go into next year with the same OL? Noel and Stanley get to be our top 2 WRs? We aint winning 6 games like that
I think we can win with this O-Line. I just think we needed a change at the coaching position, and the guy we got has a good track record. CW and BB said it in their podcast, but this guy and the S&C coach have a track record of having MEAN O-Lineman. so fingers crossed for that coming to fruition!

Yes, really.

Iowa State's sweet sixteen run of last year, likely doesn't happen without the transfer portal. If we make the tournament, this year, it will be thanks, in large part, to the transfer portal. Is Iowa State basketball ruined?

Saying that it has "ruined" college sports is almost certainly disingenuous, and blatantly ignorant of the successes it has brought to our own favorite program. Can it be difficult? Yep. Sure can. It's a tricky thing to navigate. But it hasn't ruined anything. And it's just plain silly to suggest that it has.
In a few years you won't remember the names of the portal guys and they won't remember where ames is.

Mevis, Garrett Owens, Kyle Kempt, MJ Anderson, Reeder, Stanley (who is one of my favorite WRs we have), Pettway were all pretty successful transfers.

The only “misses” we’ve had were Justin Bickham and Jaquan Amos. John Kolar was a Transfer but I’m not going to count him as a “miss” because I think he transferred here to play his final year with Charlie, he wasn’t expecting to come in and play. Alex Probert transferred in but we already had Assalley kicking. Greg Ross “transferred” here but never made it to campus.

Arlen Harris had some big time offers coming out of high school and had a list of schools after him when he announced he’s transferring. He got stuck behind better guys at Stanford and decided to get out while there was a coaching change. To me, he has a similar running style to Jirehl, with a little bit of Breece in him…but he’s not quite as patient as Breece is.

Zachary Lovett had some nice offers out of HS and got buried on Mizzou’s depth chart. Not sure how he’ll be but our LB room is somewhat of a crapshoot/mystery right now so I like the add.

Then Jayden Higgins is a big bodied WR who was productive at the FCS level and ISU held off 8+ other D1 offers (5 P5) to land him.

So far the coaches have pretty much nailed the transfers when it comes to holes to fill at certain positions so I don’t agree with your evaluation that we’ve had far more misses than hits
As I recall, Amos got hurt very early in the very first game, spent a number of games on the sideline, finally recovered enough to give it a try but wasn't able maintain the effort. It appeared that he was taken as an experience guy while some younger guys gained experience, and thus transfered out at the end of the year since PT was no longer going to be there.

So not really a miss, more unfortunate circumstances.

I dont disagree with the idea we need to be all in on development. But we're not in the spot we are without failures to develop, which was very evident in the QB, WR, and OL. New coaches likely will not turn a bunch of bad vets on the OL into superstars or make Noel and Stanley suddenly good starters.

Some dudes just arent gonna be that guy. Either because they've maxed out their talents, had their years wasted by bad coaching, or a number of other reasons. To fill some of the developmental failures we've had here we need better players too. We can still develop people and not go full Hoiberg while using the portal to upgrade holes that we don't have time to waot on
I have an issue with the QB and WR comment. I can completely back up the OL though.

The best QB in the history of the program left a little less then a year ago now. Dekkers has the talent, but I think the play calling was suspect at best this last season When you compound that with our inability to run the ball last year, and that is a lot of pressure on a first time starter at QB. He threw for 19 TD's last season which is tied for 3rd best in a single season. We also need to utilize him in the run game more, get him roughly 5 designed QB runs a game.

As far as WR goes. You take out Blythe, Danielson, and Sumrall and our top WR/pass catchers, in program history, have come in the last 6-7 years. Hutchinson, Lazard, Jones, and Butler even throw Kolar in there, and that is a pretty impressive list of WR's over the last 5 years.

I beg to Differ, and I dont think you could be any more wrong on this...

I still remember Royce White, Chris Babb, Kory Lucius, Tyus Mcgee, Nick Weiler-Babb, Scott Christopherson, Deonte Burton, Jameel Mckay, Abdel Nader, Deandre Kane and Will Clyburn. (Never mind my Spelling) But just to name a few... Those are all huge transfers that have paid huge dividends to our Basketball program, and were some of the most successful years in our programs history.

Our entire Starting OL, besides Downing I believe. Again we can only hope that the coaching change can make a difference, and this guy has put kids into the NFL from the D-II level, so we have to trust in him and CMC that he can get the job done. after all, he himself played P5 Football, and his teams while he was at Oregon were very successful.

Just hope to grab 1 or 2 of these D-II stud OL. There is always a handful of them that go pro, and with him coming from that level, maybe he has better connection then we know of.

But CMC does love what he has in that room. Hopefully with a guy that knows what it takes to play high level D1 football can get the most out of them. instead of some skinny dude who probably never played to position before.

I agree with the running Dekkers more but the problem is he has no instincts for moving around in the pocket or taking off and running designed or not.

What is the NIL going rate for football transfer? Has that been shared anywhere?

@brentblum any color/rumors?

The 365SicEm guys were talking about JT Daniels a couple weeks ago and his requests when transferring from Georgia. I get a kick out of his negotiations with Oregon State- 4 bedroom home to stay in, in home gym and personal chef. Plus 6 figure NIL deal.

JT Daniels NIL Request

Anybody else hear Brock's comment about not having to stand in the pocket like a statue? Somewhat telling for those of us that wondered after his first year. That also adds to O line woes.
