***CFB Transfer Portal 2022-23 thread***

Wasn’t Anderson a transfer from Minnesota and the linebacker from Delaware considered immediate impact transfers? Lots of guys out there that can make a difference
Yes- Anderson was a really nice surprise and fit into Heacock’s scheme perfectly. Reeder (Delaware Blue Hen guy) was good, and earned a lot of playing time, but wasn’t an impact guy imho.

Not saying there aren’t good players, but far more misses than hits in the portal.

I don’t know…a lot of this transfer hype seems like a big nothing burger, especially for non-blue blood schools. I’m talking strictly football here.

Let’s face it: most of the guys that transfer out are guys that haven’t seen much playing time. Most of the guys we get in either are coming from a P5 where they didn’t do a whole lot at their old school, or they’re decent guys from a smaller school and unproven at this level. It almost feels like I’m watching a glorified garage sale: most teams are just trading mediocre/unhappy players among themselves and it doesn’t really move the needle much for anybody 99% of the time. Good players will get taken care of by their respective schools with NIL to keep them from leaving (or they go to the NFL). Mediocre or unknown players- they get the ‘ol ‘we wish [insert player name here] the best and are grateful for his time here’ speech.

Sure, there are the occasional big transfers here and there, and they seldom go to non-blue bloods…I guess I’m over the transfer hype and if I’m CMC, would pay about zero attention to the annual rummage sale known as the transfer portal.

I think it’s fun as a fan to speculate that this new player is going to come to our school and suddenly learn how to play college football after not really doing much at his old school- but again, not moving the needle from what I’m seeing.
Sometimes a guy just needs a change of scenery and sometimes you get one who turns out to be more than fans expected (see MJ Anderson). The second tier of transfers are certainly not always going to be players that see the field, but I would bet that there is a higher probability of success than your average high school recruit (especially late signees).

Reeder was honorable mention All Big 12. I think we'd take that kind of impact from any transfer

Anyone heard of a guy named Andrew Mevis? He was the definition of "impact" player.

Mevis, Garrett Owens, Kyle Kempt, MJ Anderson, Reeder, Stanley (who is one of my favorite WRs we have), Pettway were all pretty successful transfers.

The only “misses” we’ve had were Justin Bickham and Jaquan Amos. John Kolar was a Transfer but I’m not going to count him as a “miss” because I think he transferred here to play his final year with Charlie, he wasn’t expecting to come in and play. Alex Probert transferred in but we already had Assalley kicking. Greg Ross “transferred” here but never made it to campus.

Arlen Harris had some big time offers coming out of high school and had a list of schools after him when he announced he’s transferring. He got stuck behind better guys at Stanford and decided to get out while there was a coaching change. To me, he has a similar running style to Jirehl, with a little bit of Breece in him…but he’s not quite as patient as Breece is.

Zachary Lovett had some nice offers out of HS and got buried on Mizzou’s depth chart. Not sure how he’ll be but our LB room is somewhat of a crapshoot/mystery right now so I like the add.

Then Jayden Higgins is a big bodied WR who was productive at the FCS level and ISU held off 8+ other D1 offers (5 P5) to land him.

So far the coaches have pretty much nailed the transfers when it comes to holes to fill at certain positions so I don’t agree with your evaluation that we’ve had far more misses than hits

Yes, really.

Iowa State's sweet sixteen run of last year, likely doesn't happen without the transfer portal. If we make the tournament, this year, it will be thanks, in large part, to the transfer portal. Is Iowa State basketball ruined?

Saying that it has "ruined" college sports is almost certainly disingenuous, and blatantly ignorant of the successes it has brought to our own favorite program. Can it be difficult? Yep. Sure can. It's a tricky thing to navigate. But it hasn't ruined anything. And it's just plain silly to suggest that it has.

Totally agree. My only complaint is our staff isnt aggressive enough finding more portal guys. I feel very good about the 3 we have gotten so far.
I know everyone wants us to revamp our OL and bring in 3-5 OL transfers, but Campbell feels very good about the talent we currently have in the OL room.

We are being aggressive in the portal, they just have to be the right fit for us and the culture within those walls. Don’t be surprised if we add one more transfer to this class on the defensive side of the ball

I don't think this staff is ever going to be super aggressive in the portal. They're going to get guys that fill huge holes like Higgins for WR and guys that have previous relationships like Harris and Lovett. Culture and development are so important for this program too that they aren't just going to start bringing in loads of transfers every year.

I dont even want to know what the roster for basketball last year is without the portal. Terrifying to think about

I'd wager to bring in who they have, they have been & will continue to be very aggressive. The competition for those who have transferred in has been intense & only increased the past couple years.

Time to show that.

Who are returning OL players? There's a few names I really do not need to ever hear from again
