The “We Will” Collective

It's a soccer field.

For ****'s sake, this thread is exactly why ISU is dead last in donations in the Big 12. Oh boo hoo about the website not being pretty enough for you guys. The names associated should be all that you need to know when it comes to credibility.

Are any of the other school collectives worried about the state of the economy? They're asking for people who have the money to step up and donate.

Look, guys. It's not complicated. You donate money. The money goes to the players.

They are adding the charity part to follow the original intent of NIL while also possibly doing some good for the community.

Yes, I've donated.

That's a really dangerous thought process because you don't know their level of involvement. I think we're safe assuming that this isn't some scam but beyond that we don't really know anything.

It will be interesting to see how much the overhead costs are for these collectives

While that is certainly true for some, that is a pretty general Statement. Some kids and their families are going to see a good path to success playing for good coaches like Campbell and maybe making less NIL for the few years they are in college. It's why Campbell and TJ will recruit those kids and hope they stick around vs recruiting kids after the biggest payday.
Obviously this group of football super seniors, and guys like Georges and Naz etc, grew to love Ames and what they experienced at Iowa State.

The new reality that a kid who came from nothing can come here and excel, and as a result see their value increase like Isheem Young, and go get paid somewhere else changes everything

There will always be exceptions, but developmental programs like Iowa State will see this happen regularly.

Oh for sure we're going to have guys moving forward that get bought. I just think for the most part Campbell and TJ are going to try and recruit guys that they think will stick around for less NIL money but a better culture and hopefully better development that gives them a shot at a lot more money in the pros

It’s a chicken and egg thing. We haven’t had a first round nfl draft pick for how many years. The last first round pick before Tyrese was Royce, before that Brackins (I think). We aren’t exactly churning them out here.

The dudes you need to win at the levels that people want and think Iowa State can win at, aren’t the Matt Thomas’s of the world that went to Europe before catching on.

Love those guys, they gave me lots of enjoyment.

It also leads to having a philosophy of football in a manner where they lose games just like we did last year, and people lost their minds over.

So fans are going to have to make some tough decisions here. Accept 7 football wins as a ceiling most years because of 5 losses by 20 points, or get jn and play the game.

I do agree with all of that. I'm very concerned about our fan base reaction to NIL. I don't love it but it is how things are now

Man take a breath - it was a pretty basic statement. The economy contracted in the first quarter, a lot of talk about a recession and inflation in general are headwinds to any charitable organization. Also, I'm not a soccer fan so don't see the soccer field.
No it didn't. Inflation is a real problem right now, but the US economy was still quite robust during the first quarter. An economic contraction is by definition a recession, and the US is certainly not in a recession right now. Could it be later this year? Yes, but unlikely.

I work in the finance industry and am actually a bit tired or hearing people refer to 'these poor economic conditions'. The economy has been red hot since the back half of 2020. Huge amounts of money are flying around and consumer spending is very strong. This combination is why we are now have an inflation problem - too much money in the system. If you want to complain about inflation, I'm with you. Stop blaming a 'poor economy' that doesn't exist.

They really need more information on their site. I'm going to do some sort of monthly donation, but I would like to know more about where everything is going and how the organization is actually going to run prior to actually doing it.
I ended up putting in a smaller monthly amount just to try to help get the ball rolling. I'll just adjust after they can get some more information out on what is actually going to be happening with the money raised.

@cygrads, lets get our definitions correct. A recession or economic contraction is determined by negative GDP growth. US GDP, doing a quick google search, was 1.4% in Q1 of 2022. So there was no contraction, it in fact grew. Now, I would place a lot of money that when you say " The economy contracted in the first quarter," your referring to the Down Jones, or S&P 500 index, which is not used to determine economic activity or recession.

I think GDP was -1.4% for 1st quarter.

NOT saying this about the "we will" group, but you know in the next couple years there will be stories that come out of rampant scams/agents/etc.

Plus we're all excited about names we love, yet wait until retired NFL/NBA hall of famers are playing this role at other schools that have more of those than we do (although for current NBA players ISU is pretty high and Iowa always has been high for NFL active roster).

Like the whole endeavor, Iowa and ISU will be 20th-60th place...but the distance between those places and 1-10 will be a hockey stick upward curve, not a straight line.

Down 1.4% Economist article

I would agree things were doing well overall thought with some inflation. And then Bad Vlad invaded Ukraine and now we have:
>gas & oil price spikes
>trade restrictions
>food insecurity / price spikes
>more fear / less greed
>oh, yeah, political risk - I remember that!

Things were just coming around and then, Dammit!

First, it's doubtful to me that this crazy environment we're currently in is going to last very long. It can't because it's not sustainable, not just for ISU but also for the vast majority of other colleges and universities across the nation. The period we're in now is just a short (hopefully) transition period until saner heads prevail and come up with an approach that's sustainable and does a much better job of establishing a level playing field for all colleges.
NPP, Nice Post Pope. I will remind you though, this is the crazy thread. Sane people and posts belong elsewhere. :)

Of course, some hope is very nice and we will allow it! In fact wouldn't it be nice if what you are saying here does occur? And fairly soon. It is definitely what I am hoping for.
I am not a fan of the current state of affairs, but even I can see that a kid who actually wants to be part of a Matt Campbell program is more likely to stick around for the atmosphere and culture if they are turning down an offer of twice what ISU is offering rather than an infinite percentage more than what ISU is (isn't) offering. I have turned down other jobs that were a raise over my current job because of work environment, autonomy, boss relationships, etc. But there is a limit to the amount of compensation difference that is palatable in such cases.

That being said, the innovative way can still be sought even while ISU is at least making an effort to keep up with the Joneses.
I will be supporting it. They need to give us more information soon though. Even if it is just a statement that they are working on it and will be putting up more information. But post some information now.

And who is to say that another Collective apart from this one, won't also sprout up? Or as you say some other innovative approaches take hold as well? Nothing stopping that.

We would all be complaining even more loudly I think if NO collective at all was there or even in the works.

If there is a collective that goes only to men’s basketball and the money is going to be used to bring in and retain talented athletes like Hunter, sign me up.
If needed, and it probably is, another collective could start for this purpose.. I certainly wouldn't know how to do it.

This is part of the information shortfall at the moment.

Tough time to roll out the collective when the economy isn't going well. Also, why the green background on the tweet - color of money!?
Well sure, these are uncertain times. More uncertain due to Mad Vlad and the Ukrainian invasion than the economy though. The economy has been good but of course one side will always say it isn't or needs to be better. (Further discussion belongs in the cave)

You are predisposed that the (any current) collective is about more of our money and rightly so. But the We Will logo is only pasted over a green background grass field. Maybe you didn't do any looking and see the same logo on different backgrounds or by itself on a white background?
I was responding to your post, but more this thread in general. The point is you don't see any other schools slowing the "rollout" of their collectives because of the economy or any other lame excuse. But ISU, perpetually in the bottom of college athletics for most of our lives, has fans who will find any reason to not donate what they can to help their school/teams. Your post was just a perfect (and most recent in the thread) encapsulation of the ISU fan mindset.

You don't have to be a soccer fan to recognize pretty basic field markings. Any 10 year old could tell you what it is. But sure, it's the color of money lol.

These are 18-22 year old kids, most come from poorer backgrounds, they don’t give a damn about work environment. They’re at the school for no more than 5 years, most less than that.

Culture is great, but being able to change the course of your families lives is what they care about.

Look at all those guys that played at Iowa, and put up with all of that racial ********, they did that because Iowa puts dudes in the nfl. Now those same kids can go somewhere and start getting paid right away
Not all kids are the same. You are painting a Rembrandt with an 8" brush.

No they’re not all the same.

But they’re a lot more homogeneous when it comes to playing at schools that can afford to pay them

It’s a hell of a lot easier for a middle aged man who is financially secure to make these statements, than it is for kids that come from backgrounds where they have no money and see these checks as a way to start changing their families financial well being.

(referencing part of your response to @VeloClone/@Pope posts)

Agree, I can’t imagine this specific collective is the only strategy that will come about (and it shouldn’t be the sole approach) just happens to be the first that has come to light.

Not all kids' situations are the same.

We have had two kids who have fathers that played for years in the NFL and that is just on the football team - on offense - in the QB room. For those guys a good fit and a route to success is going to be a lot more important than money at this stage. And that is just a snippet. Sure, I have never argued against - in fact in these threads I have argued for the case that the money will be family changing for some kids - some kids needing the money for their families. We can't be everything for everyone - that hasn't changed. But some will have different priorities and if ISU can make an effort a difference in money might not be the deciding factor.

EDIT: Go read or listen to Jamie's comments. He pretty much is saying the same thing. There are some who are going to just go for money but a lot of kids want to find the right situation for them. The last recruits he talked to didn't even mention money, they wanted to play for the coaches in the right environment.
