Douglas built the ISU wrestling program? And here I thought it was Dr. Harold Nichols. My bad.
Someone who has dealt with a lot of turnover and has never had anywhere NEAR the talent in the backcourt Wayne inherited.

Rather than an up and coming offensive or defensive coordinator I would like to see the next hire be a current head coach. They will then in great likelihood bring with them a coaching staff which is already assembled in large part and used to working together well.
Douglas maintained the status quo of our wrestling program. I'm not saying he wasn't a great coach, but I don't think you can blame Pollard for weaseling him out to get CAEL SANDERSON as the HC. Ask any kid in a HS wrestling room who Cael Sanderson is. I bet you can't find one that doesn't know the name. Ask the same group who Bobby Douglas is. I bet less than half could tell you.
Under Morgan we had a mediocre basketball team who showed minimum effort on the court and a tendancy to make bad choices off the court. As opposed to now, where we have a mediocre team that is very young and has potential to become better...

Gill? Yeah, let's get him primed up in case Nebraska needs a coach in a couple years.
It is so obvious... STEVE LONEY! He is one of us. You don't need great recruiting when you can completely dominate the line of scrimmage.. which is what we did when Loney was here.

After watching U of I's BB team, I would have to disagree. Todd is a VERY defensive minded coach and they put it to us.
Morgan could recruit, but he couldn't coach. He was way to busy BEING the coach to coach. If Pollards requirement for a head coach is to essentially be a "ceo," Wayne was in the Florida Keys sipping on rum punch.
As far as Turner Gill preparing himself for Nebraska job, that is easy to take care of in the contract, mac had in his initial contract he could not leave for a job within the Big 8 or Iowa. This could also be an issue in getting Gill.
As far as Chris Petersen, remember Jim Criner was the last coach we got after a successful career at Boise State. Boise State success does not alway mean success at BCS schools, other than Houston Nutt I could not find others that have found success. The jury is still out on Hawkins.

I would prefer that we hired a minority from the standpoint that it would help recruiting. The biggest thing we have been lacking is speed. Ames is a hard place to recruit to. It would be an advantage to offer players something other schools can't. There are several deserving candidates out there - even if we don't get Gill.
BSU was also only I-AA back when Criner was there. They were a I-AA power. I think the have only been D-I since the early to mid 90s.
In fact as I write this it really infuriates me all of these schools that have new D-I programs that have stepped over us in such a short time like Boise, South Florida, and even Buffalo.
What about Derrick Dooley? His dad was the great Vince Dooley. He has coached with (and impressed) Nick Saban. He seems to be doing a darned good job at La. Tech.
If Gill is destined for Nebraska, then he's going to end up at Nebraska. What difference does it make if he has to go through Iowa State? Bo Pelini is at Nebraska for the long haul, they're not getting rid of him any time soon (He may be there for life).

Yes! Let's pick pick our FB coach based on EIUs bball coach after one game. Too bad there isn't a search committee that we could recommend you for.

I just think he's the best future HC out there, but I also don't think we have much of a shot at him.
I haven't said this yet today, but Kevin Wilson would be my vote. (As if I have any say in the matter). Don't worry, though, I won't push it down your throat. I just think he's going to take a head coaching job soon and fall in line with some of the better ones that Stoops has produced and now competes against in the Big 12.
I really like this suggestion. Wilson has proven he can coach offenses at both Northwestern and Oklahoma - he doesn't need the Sam Bradford type-talents to move the ball.
