Stop Playing Iowa

I think this is more of a drop UNI issue than a drop Iowa issue. I love the Iowa/Iowa State game, and generally I think it's a game we have a good chance to win. However, with an already tough conference schedule, and with Iowa on the schedule every year, our other two games need to be against the worst-of-the-worst. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't be able to easily beat UNI, we should, but it never seems to work out that way.

Honestly, the last game I can remember coming in to feeling absolutely convinced we would win was Western Illinois in 2012, and maybe a Kansas game here and there. We need more Western Illinois games.

I'm totally for axing the UNI game but Iowa is a fellow P5 school. We don't really lose anything other than maybe bowl eligibility by playing them. The difference with UNI is that they are really two levels below us in football. It looks awful if we lose to them from the outside even if they are actually good. That isn't the case when it comes to Iowa.

We need more teams like Iowa in the Big 12. They're basically KSU, a disciplined team that has good talent but not wildly better than what ISU can have in good years. A better program than us (not arguing that) but we have a better chance of beating them than teams loaded with Texas speed.

Unfortunately with Houston/BYU as the rumored schools I don't see those programs with Big 12 resources ever having speed/athleticism like Iowa or KSU. They'll have superior talent.

Unless UNI's program truly falls apart or ISU becomes a very good FBS program, the UNI game will never be the FCS tune up game that lots of teams schedule. It won't be that October or November game most SEC teams play against an FCS where they win even if they play like crap. The late October night we beat OK State to knock them out of the title game Alabama played horribly against Georgia Southern and still won.

If you have seen any of my posts about this in the past, you know this isn't just a reaction to yesterday. We need to stop playing Iowa every year if we are ever going to have the profile of this program be raised. IMO it's unrealistic and naive to think playing this game every year will result in a program that has the ability improve.

In my lifetime, there are essentially 3 programs in the Big 12 that elevated themselves from the absolute dregs of the league - KSU, BU, and KU (for a short time). These teams all played different styles, occured in slightly different eras, and had different coaching philosophies driving them.

The #1 correlation between all of these programs is that they scheduled cupcakes in their noncon. Not only cupcakes, but the cupcakiest cupcakes that every cupcaked. When Snyder came back to KSU for Round 2, he schedule TWO FCS teams his first year back.

This program needs positive energy. It needs to learn how to win.

"WELL THEY SHOULD ALWAYS BEAT UNI!"
"THE STATE LOVES THIS RIVALRY GAME!"

I agree. The problem is that they DON'T always beat UNI. In fact we are batting a ridiculous .500 against them in recent memory.

Batting .500 against Iowa is likely the best we could ever realistically hope for over the long haul.

Matt Campbell talked about wanting to make ISU the Midwest destination for the Big 12. If you were a decent Iowa high school product with an offer from both ISU and Iowa, why would you every consider going to ISU after watching beatdowns like Saturday?

Yes, the Iowa/ISU game has been fun in the past. However, if I had the choice, I'd rather be 2-0 vs. Rhode Island and Arkansas State with San Jose State on the horizon than 0-2 and the only real interesting thing until next year revolving around if Park will unseat Lanning and if we can possibly hang on to this recruiting class.

I for one agree with you. I think that they should drop UNI AND iowa. Find the worst 1AA team you can get and then the worst G5 team. Then you have 3 wins before the conference season and are half way to a bowl.

At the very least, the iowa game has to be every other year or two on two off. Neither AD needs it for budget purposes. All it does is generate hatred.

The program needs wins. Plain and simple. I'm in favor of scheduling as favorably as possible to increase the likelihood of securing those wins.

Maybe that means dropping Iowa. It more likely means dropping UNI. We definitely don't need both. I've never understood why we help subsidize Farley's contract and continue to lose to him. If we're going to schedule FCS, find someone that is going to be a guaranteed W. Even if the revenue takes a hit, the wins and morale of the program ought to improve.

I've long supported the idea of dropping Iowa so that we could schedule with some other P5 programs once in a while. When was the last time we played a non-con against a P5 school that wasn't Iowa? Minnesota in '97 comes to mind.

My god, are we going to do this after every game? How about we just drop football all together? If we're really talking about only playing teams that we can compete with maybe we should drop out of the big 12 and joining the pioneer football league.

I get this and all, but does anyone else see the problem of celebrating being nearly .500 aganst a team?

I'm all for cutting out UNI. They are a second instate rival, in their minds, and FCS which is truly just a lose-lose situation. However, Iowa is a completely different animal. Yes, they kick our butts once-in-awhile but the FBS is going to more and more high level games and they are a natural cross-conference rival. Sure it gets boring sometimes as you'd like to play a Minnesota or Missouri or perhaps Arkansas but Iowa should be on the schedule every year. Plus its not like we've lost 15 years in a row again.

Well after the B12 implodes, you never know where we'll end up.;)o_O:)
Dropping Iowa is just a dumb ass idea, the OP should go stand in the corner of shame .

It's a very mean and nasty place... and I don´t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it. You, me or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life. But ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That´s how winning is done!"

We cant get rid of UNI because we need the money. That's the price we agreed to pay when we debt financed upgrades to our stadium and facilities.

No need to cancel the Iowa game. It is against a real opponent and is a cash cow for the state of Iowa (a state with no major professional sports teams).

UNI on the other hand... PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS why hasn't this been removed yet?

Stop playing Iowa, and UNI and ND State and the list could go on. Actually for a top 20 fbs team we could do worse than Iowa. And maybe UNI is the most dangerous game. They treat it like a rivalry game and our team doesn't seem to even care about it.

You need more teams like KSU in the Big 12? A team that has beaten Iowa State 8 years in a row and is 22-4 against Iowa State since 1990. Alright.

If it was basically Iowa practicing like this past Saturday every year, this would make sense.

But it's too much investment from both fan bases and too competitive to drop it.

IMO I think Iowa would be the ones to drop the game... What do they gain if they win? They are expected to win.. basically its just a trap game for them on years they are projected to be a great ball team. If they lose, they lose a lot of hope for bowl chances and CFP down the road as well. They should be wondering why they play us.
