Baylor loss

Depth and defense. That what cost us tonight. And, because the former at least partially impacts the latter, this won’t be the last time we lose a game like that.

We scored 5 bench points compared to BU’s 44. And we score 51 second half points after leading at halftime, only to allow BU to score 60.

I mentioned to a friend after the OU game that I’m afraid we’ll lose a lot of games that way down the stretch. We’re going to wear down, lose intensity on defense, lose focus and make more mental and physical errors, etc.

I worry this is the reality of the current roster. And, unfortunately, it will probably lead to some unfair criticism of Prohm.
Wait until next year.

Prohm walked into a very, very tough situation. In June he was handed an overrated roster and thus a fanbase with too high of expectations, following an ISU legend without fault, and essentially a complete rebuild in Year 2.

That said, I had hoped to see a little more from Prohm this year in the sense the team would maybe get a little better at something. What do we do better than last year? I guess it is good we do not do anything significantly worse. I hate to say it, but I am probably just prejudiced as I was concerned with JP doing the hiring and had the feeling JP was at risk of looking for a babysitter he wanted to have over for Sunday dinner.

Monte only starts hitting threes when we are down and need them in a bad way to to catch up...then he suddenly starts hitting. Monte has got to start making threes in the game..not at the end...in order to take pressure off the lane on McKay and Niang. We just don't match up well with Baylor. This team lost twice to them last year. We may be 1-2 right now but we are even with last year. People keep saying this team is missing something...yea Naz long. That extra leader and three point shooter. That's what is missing. In order to be a good team you must have at least (2) three point shooters on the floor IMO. If you have (3) and also have an inside presence than you are a legit top 10 team. We had (3) now we have just 2 and sometimes 1.

Lately MM has been making some really unusual bad late game plays...dribbled off his leg vs OU etc.. I love Monte but something has happened as of late that...well...lets just say is concerning.

This team needs to win the next 4 straight in order to have a shot at a top 2-3 finish IMO.

teams are playing way off him daring him to shoot the 3...hopefully the couple he hit at the end will give him some confidence, but he has to start hitting to open up the middle like you said....

We extended the lead to ten on the backs of Niang and Nader mid second half. Prohm then pulls both players out and the lead was lost in a blink of the eye. We never really recovered. My saying it was a bad move by Prohm but it was the turning point in the game. Burton provided nothing off the bench.

The expected growing pains between a veteran roster and a new coach aren't worked out yet. Play for March and if things still magically fall into place for a Big 12 title, more the better.

With the experience we have it's frustrating that it seems we play with no urgency for the first 35 minutes. We give up the 3 because we're afraid of the dribble drive we can't stop. Depth is also killing us.

I would say they are lazy on defense, but I don't think they know how to play it at times.
... they don't take free throw shooting seriously as a team (McKay at least has been working at it)
...they lack aggression on the boards. They give up way to many offensive boards.
...they lack the grit and determination, perhaps even the ability, to put people away early.

I'm just disappointed, but we saw much of the same last year. Right now, unless Prohm finds a way to right this disaster, they will probably end up 9-9 in the conference (lose twice to KU, lose another to OU, lose at KSU, lose at BU and WVU, and lose at TTU). Could be worse if they lay another egg on the road such as at Texas or TCU. Lots of talent here, no depth, no consistency, and no "I'm going to kick your *****" attitude.

Three things that need to improve to make this a winning team:

1. Make your %&%$ FTs. Baylor made almost every one they needed to, while ISU missed a ton including the front end of several one and ones.
2. Use your TOs! The bench is short, so there is no excuse for not using every TO in a half to give your guys some rest. Prom was commenting in his post game interview that he couldn't get Nader and GN back in the game when BU went on a run. How about calling a TO? It wasn't like you were going to ruin any rhythm that ISU had.
3. Take care of the ball at crunch time. MM has had really bad TOs at OU and today at crunch time. GN fell down at crunch time vs UNI. Not even going to talk about Nader going into the half.

As much as I like watching ISU run, I think they need to vary the pace in these games, play slow and then fast. Just not enough serviceable subs on this team to run hard all game.

9-9,wouldn't be a disaster, albeit a couple games under what should have been expected. We were a couple Naz Long miracles from that two years ago with a much better team IMO.

Our team looks like one that stopped recruiting two years ago and went years not prioritizing defense and rebounding.

McKay is just a freaking head case. He may put of stats but he does not play as a teammate like Morris and niang. This team may not have depth, but they don't have mental toughness either. The 2000 team had toughness, that is the difference between a good team and a great team.

He had ONE FOUL until the end of the game. With how Baylor was playing in the paint...how is that even possible?

Very frustrating game, especially being up by 12 and then 11 points at two different times during the 2nd half.

I was telling my folks after the game that IMO the margin of error for this team is very thin; i.e. we need almost everyone to play well in order to give us a good chance to win the game against good teams like Baylor. GN, MM, and AN all scored 20 + points, and McKay had a decent game offensively with 13 points, but as others have written already wasn't to be found anywhere on defense. MT had a really nice game rebounding the basketball, but only shot 3/10. Deonte was pretty much non-existent. We can beat a decent but not great/likely NIT team in Texas Tech with some of our guys having sub-par games, but we are going to need every single player on their "A" games to win the games against the best teams on our schedule. That's not always going to happen, obviously.

Crappiest thing about this loss, other than it being at Hilton, is that it comes right before a tough part of the schedule; next two on the road, than hosting Oklahoma on Big Monday. I do think this team is talented and explosive enough to sweep both Texas and K-State on the road, but odds are with the lack of depth (this team misses Naz in the worst way), that will be hard to make happen.

All of this.

The margin had been thinner in years past than many realize, and our off-season made it even thinner. Basically the same group minus McKay but with Kane, Hogue, Naz, and Ejim were very, very close/lucky from going 9-9 in conference and worse than 11-1 in non-conference. We have the same holes of last year, but without Naz, Hogue, and BDJ.

I agree, but all of the media hype led us to believe that this team had so much talent that they could coach themselves to the final four.

True, but media hype is just that.

Imo it was largely based on the trajectory from last year at this time while also ignoring how we actually were wining. We were never going to be the type of team that grinds out that type of regular season success imo. Not under Fred or with a group he put together. In fact, I think our only hope of doing so was Prohm not being like Fred. What the media latched onto imo was our ability to go on a run in March. There is not much separation in CBB imo, a couple additions this off-season and our margin is a lot greater.

Think of the close misses in recruiting- the two guys at Oregon, Anderson at 'Zona, Diallo, the two kids at St. Johns, and so on. Sigh.

Why'd we lose? Johnathan ******* Motley scored 27 pts on 13/15 shooting. That's game right there. Who was 'guarding' him usually- Niang, McKay?

Nader played a good game overall, but 5 TO's hurt (though that one offensive foul was a straight flop from Prince) and we need a moratorium on Nader shooting a 3 with more than 20 seconds on the shot clock NO MATTER HOW OPEN HE IS!

There should be an * in Motley's box score since he rarely had to do much work besides shoot a layup. It was like he was playing against a bad non-conference team.
