COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

I remember when Herman was here as OC. Rhoads didn't like him, a lot of fans didn't like him. They were happy when he was gone.
He was cocky and brash.
Now they WISH he would deign to come back as our head coach.

Some guys are cocky because they are good.

I know what you're saying, however we have to be mindful also that we 16-18 year old kids are not making multi-million dollar gifts to the athletic department. We're not buying suites and season tickets for 15 people and RV passes for all of our friends. So we have to appreciate the old folks too! :)

Season ticket holders and donors will like anyone if they recruit well and win.

No, the coach doesn't have to do any of that. If he wins, those people will be happy. It's JP's job to shake their hand, load their heads full of BS, and take their money.

We are the Cyclones, so some weather related tagline would be easy to come up with. The tagline is fine, but the overall vision is what is important. I would like to see a program geared towards excitement and acknowledging image as a recruiting tool. I think a lot of people would.

I mean, coming out to Smoke on the Water isn't exciting anyone under 50.
With Fleck we could switch it to Row, Row, Row your Boat. Wouldn't be any worse than Smoke on the Water, at least.

Are we really on the PJ Fleck bandwagon now? The guy with a 15-21 record and his rah rah forced enthusiasm? Give me a guy with some substance. We're only narrowing down on Fleck because again, he would come cheaper than coaches with more success and substance.

1-11 his first year with Cubits players, 8-5 and 7-5 since.

But he's brought in some great recruits to Western Michigan, something we'd need him to do here.

If we wait until his recruits are Seniors he might be well out of our price range.

It's a risk, but the guy is a pretty damn good recruiter.

Old folks who have seen only a handful of really good seasons in their lives, just like us younger guys.

It might be worth it to take a chance on a flashy guy if it means bringing in better recruiting classes than we've ever seen in Ames.

Guess what those 16-18 year old kids win football games, and if they win football games 60 year olds will write checks.

I like Fleck, but is up to JP to determine if the fits in the ISU culture, I will trust him. That said, to worry he will leave after 2-3 year is crazy. The Chiz had connections to Auburn and was considered the best head coaching candidate at the time we hired him. He was hired at Auburn because of those connections. Fleck has no such connections except to NIU, I don't think he would leave ISU for NIU. If he can leave after 2-3 years for a better job that means he has proved he can coach at a P5 school which means he has won football games.

If you read about Fleck his is a culture changer, that is why the AD hired him at WMU. She took a chance on a guy that thinks differently and coaches in a 21st century fashion. I would like ISU to be a on the leading edge of that versus trying to do it the same way we always have.

Lets me different lets stand out even if it is weird and different than everyone else. Lets see if it works, what is the worst that can happen. We won't be any worse off than we have been in the past.

We've tried every strategy to win except open the bank. We weren't good in hoops until we paid up for Orr. We won't be good in football until we invest in the real deal.

So maybe it's time to take a chance. Hire somebody that maybe everybody doesn't think it a great guy but who can recruit and maybe win some football games.

Paul was a super nice guy, but he just couldn't get it done.

Nick Saban's an *** hole, but Bama fans love him because he wins.

A survey of my circle of friends concludes that Fleck would win back the ladies who lost interest in ISU athletics when Fred left.

Perhaps the results would come as well. Just putting it out there.

I am not sure Fleck would be interested in ISU just based on his vision of what a program should be and Jamie's. Jamie seems to want an old school like mentality, but I could be wrong.

I doubt he hires Fleck, but if he did I would be excited to see what he could do. He is a really ambitious guy. He would challenge the Athletic Department to be more creative on gameday and has a great stadium to use to do it. We may even get cool uni's. Who knows.

That said, I could see fritz or Monken first.

Take this FWIW. CW retweeted.

Iowa State AD is on my flight from ORD to Detroit. Coaching carousel time of the year! "Who's in?"

Edit: Nevermind. GoCubs beat me to it.
