COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

In Fleck's first year at WMU, it sounds like he screwed a bunch of kids who were just getting ready to commit by pulling their offers a few weeks before signing day. In the video, the kid says it happened to all but one or two kids in the original class. It sounds like many high school coaches in central Indiana won't talk to Fleck anymore. Is there anyone in our current group of commits that we don't want to lose?

(I found the original article on the Indianapolis Star website archive, but I would have had to pay to read the whole thing. So I found another version that was free.)

Pollard would certainly not like a person like that.

I think people like to look at pictures of head coaches and make the young and handsome at the top down to the Minnesota coach level. It's nature I guess. Personally I think I can get behind every coach mentioned in here.

Opposite, although Carey can come across as boring.

Carey- substance.
Fleck- fluff.

I was kinda liking Carey early on but then I saw his team lose to Ohio and they looked bad and Ohio was certainly not impressive - these are two of the better teams in the MAC. Just made me wonder how in the world we lost to a MAC school...

Georgia Southern also played a Big 12 school and got shut out .

True - I think it was WV but let's face it WV is probably the 5th best team in the conference and it is the first (?) year for Fritz at GS and GS is new to FBS level competition and lastly one of GS and Fritz first games together and at that level.

If he is good enough to be hired at USC someday, hire him immediately

I just want ISU to make a solid hire and to choose a sitting HC (No coordinators cutting their teeth in Ames!) If he succeeds and moves on. Fine. Make another solid hire and succeed AGAIN! Eventually, somebody will come to Ames, succeed and stay. That guy will realize it is a groovy place to live, work and be a Cyclone Super Hero!

All the guys are suspect on the list. I don't understand how Pollard can say we are taking it to the next level and all we hear about are lower level coaches. Next level to me are guys that are making 2 million and we are going to offer 3.5 million. Go after Fedora at NC and Shaw at Stanford, etc. Heck I would even take Mack Brown over most of these guys. And then Frost? I would take Loney anyday over the unknown of Frost.

I hope it has been quiet and these are not the real coaches we are going after.

He isn't really off base...

Edit: Besides his Lazard transferring to a FCS school.

Lazard would likely transfer to a FCS program so he wouldn't have to sit out a season and then test the NFL waters. No point in him sticking around at ISU and being primarily a decoy in KN's offense.

Only If Saban and Sweeney aren't interested, of course. Gotta hit them up first.

I don't know why people are talking about a 3+ year rebuilding process, as if it is a bad thing. A major overhaul is needed. That's going to take time.

Be a smart ***, but those guys are making a lot of money. If Pollard wants to be cheap on this hire, Leath needs to fire him now. There are real good coaches out there making around 2 million and those are the next level.

Fleck sounds like a decent option. I feel like no matter what, the instant our next coach has success he's gone. All loyalty can get you here is fired after things go south a couple years after you turn down your better job opportunities. At least that's what the new coach will have on his mind.

Because of this we might as well have a coach that will leave behind the best the roster possible which Fleck could do if he can bring the same kind of recruiting success to Ames. I'd still put Fritz at the top of the list because I hope he could be our Bill Snyder.

Do you think Fedora and Shaw are a secret to the rest of the NCAA? If upping their pay would have got them to a different school it would have happened by now, or someone is already in the process. And you can bet that it isn't a school at the bottom of the pecking order like ISU.

I don't think you get it. A coach who is making 2 mill a year and consistently winning 7-9 games is not going to pack his bag and head to Ames for an extra half or mill a year where it is historically proven to be difficult to win 6.

Sorry, it's just not going to happen.

We won't know if we don't try. Tired of the ISU defeatist attitude. If Pollard doesn't try he should be fired. We did it with Johnny many years ago. I wonder if we would have got Johnny if people had this attitude back then.

Be an ISU defeatist. I'm saying the min we need to pay is 3.5 million and guarantee it for 4 years.....Enough we can attract a good coach.

That is taking it to the next level.

look around at hires done at any of the P5 schools the last several years unless you are a Michigan, OSU or Texas, seldom does a top level P5 coach leave for another P5 conference job, look at Florida even last year, they went to Colorado State for the coach, look at the current coaches in the Big12. David Shaw supposedly told Texas he wasn't interested last time around

Fleck's recruiting class is about 50 spots higher than ISU's right now, and is beating some bigger P5 programs for them. His class is headlined by a big time 4 star RB. He would instantly improve our recruiting. Key for him would be a veteran, proven DC. Offense is a spread, more pass oriented. However, they are also top 30 in rushing.

PS....in short yardage situations, he puts the QB under center!!

This is all I needed to read. I'm sold.

How do you know we didn't try? A quick phone call of - "Hey Shaw. You want to come to ISU? We'll offer you $1 million pay raise?" Shaw: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH" - wouldn't make of the reports Chris gives us every night.
