But come on, we have no running game, the line was not really keeping the pressure at bay and the play calling went away from what was working in the first half, passes across the middle and underneath as that is Iowa's defensive weakness....

Past performance is an indicator of future success, but not the only one. Sam's light may turn on, but that interception when the game was still undecided was inexcusable, and Cutleresque. Kid's got talent, but I've seen enough.

Once again, this isn't a referendum on anyone's play in this thread. Keeping SR the unquestioned starter is an option in the poll. No one is blaming anything on anyone in this poll/thread.

I'm 100% for status quo. If it gets to game 8 or 9 and it's a 2-3 win season, switch to Lanning and run triple option cause the 80s were super cool.

I can't find 6 wins on the schedule, thus no bowl game, which has been the barometer of success for this program. We need to develop a quarterback if we ever have aspirations of not being a perennial cellar dweller. Sam is not that quarterback.

Which QB will air it out for our great WRs? That's who I want, our best pass was for on a WR into triple coverage. The game rewards offense we need to take advantage. If it gets intercepted it's really no different than a punt.

The last thing I want to see is CPR start rotating QBs. He has no touch for anything in that regard except destroying their confidence and ability to play.

I think what most people are frustrated with, is the lack of progress made by Richardson. He is still making the same mistakes and same bad throws he was making previously. He is great if his first option is open, but god forbid he is covered and has to read the defense, he gets happy feet and cant make a decision.

All of his great plays were plays that the first option was open -- Wesley's TD catch, Bundrage's TD catch, Ryen's long catch out of the backfield, Wesley's drag route across the middle. Mis-reading defenses is a great excuse for Freshman, not 5th year seniors.

The score was tied at 17-17 with 3+ min left, but that 2nd half was brutal! When a team can't run the ball they become one dimensional. I know, master of the obvious, but there are other issues with the passing game. Once an offense becomes one dimiensional in the passing game it better have some creativity. That said, throwing the ball to Lazard 3/4 of the time. I know everyone believes Allen is the all set for the NFL - he is good, but you can't look his way everytime. Bundrage, Montgomery, Wesley at WR had its mismatches and SR and Mangenius didn't find them. Boesen (6'6") was open a few times and had a height mismatch on Lomax (the 5'10" Iowa Safety) and WR didn't even look his way. Did SR not recognize it or is he being instructured to target Lazard who was getting safety help over the top? Realize there are hot reads, but if I'm the rest of the receiving group, they are p*ssed and disheartened right now.

Desmond King (Iowa's best cover corner) sat on a Lazard out pattern earlier in the game and knocked it down; probably should have been a pick. Late in the game SR locked on Lazard on the same out and King recognized it immeidately and picked it.

SR/Mangenius best use all the tools or 2-10 is looking likely...again.

I'll take the senior over an unproven QB and the QB whose only start last year was in a blowout loss to Kansas. Sam might not be very good but he starts for a reason.

Sam made some terrific throws that game. Both TD passes were into pretty good coverage and the one back shoulder fade was really well timed. They need to design some freaking easier pass plays though. So many of those passes are 30-40 yards for small gains. Then we never had time to use any double moves and the DL just pins their ears back with no running game. Sam could easily have had a couple more picks that game but I'd really like to see more routes towards the middle or screens. Easier throws.

I'm not a big Sam believer, but I think the answer is clearly "Status quo - This job is SR's unless he gets hurt no matter what the W/L record looks like."


We've only played 2 games and there are plenty of issues on offense not named Sam Richardson. I think the worst thing you can do is overreact, even though the 2nd half was atrocious.

Issues like:
Playcalling
Use of tight ends
Running back power.
Blocking defensive ends
Push
Follow up on blocks
Stupid fouls

Just play Lanning in Toledo and see what happens. Watching Toledo defense against Arkansas looks more like a Lanning type gameto win. Both Arky and Toledo dropped a lot of passes by the way.

Which is? Actually don't answer that, because if you say anything other than "win games" there's no point.

Every proven player was once an unproven player that more than likely took over from a proven player.

I'm very disenchanted with SBR, but it's too early in the season. He looked like the SBR of old later on Saturday. But he might learn from his mistakes and improve? I mean, it is supposed to work like that, right. RIGHT?!?

I agree with this, but I also think this is the reason we're going to stick with Sam longer than we maybe should this season. Our staff has taken so much heat for mind****ing quarterbacks over the last several seasons (rightfully so), and now I think we're going to see an over adjustment.

Quite frankly, though, at this point Sam has not looked like he was sold pre-season. Either they were lying to the media/fan base about his improvement, or he's regressing against real opponents. At some point that needs to be addressed. I'm not saying this week, but it needs to be addressed. Either Sam needs to become the confident quarterback that has shown progress that we were told about last month, or he needs to be replaced.

I'm still of the opinion that, if this staff is still around, Lanning won't see a starting snap as a Cyclone. I think SBR plays out this season at which point we transition to DeLira, i.e. Mangino's guy. Whether we get a year of Rohach or not, I don't know. That's just been my thought since last season.
