Interesting Stat

Uhh, looks pretty damn similar. That's all most are trying to say. I'm glad Dan was let go when he was, and Rhoads should have been too after last year.

No, he shouldn't have. He was given a vote of confidence by letting him overhaul the coaching staff. People a lot smarter than you knew he could do it. You don't say yes you are the right man for the rebuild then fire a guy for rebuilding.

First six seasons.

Dan 26-42
1 bowl win, 2 losses

CPR 29-46
1 bowl win, 2 losses

So no, even with a hell of a lot easier schedules, Dan wasn't better.

If only those stats could have some sort of context.
Basically shows me that CPR had a huge head start in fan support, $, facilities, and talent on hand, but couldn't turn that into anything, schedule or not.

It is very interesting how seldom ISU has winning seasons, and for how many of them they had to get a former Iowa coach to accomplish that. Or a former Iowa player going way back to Clyde Williams. Could you post some stats on conference championships and who was the coach when the cyclones won them too please.

You really want to play that game?

Ok, all I have to say is gable.

Well if you knew about it instead of just going from that, you would know that the seasons before CPR were bad(including where Dan got fired then made worse by Chiz). CPR winning with the guys they couldn't is what brought up fan support, and him reviving Iowa State and bringing all the fans in is what helped build those facilities that werent here when he got here.

Do you know the difference between the '75 and '76 season?
99 and 2000?
08 and 09?

One year they thought they were bad, the next they knew they could win. That's one big difference between last years and this years team as well.

And some nice NFL talent conveniently left for him.
It's OK to admit that CPR has had a disappointing run after good years, and that those are entirely of his own making. It doesn't make you disloyal, and it won't get you kicked out of the family reunions (might as well get that started for the season).

There was plenty of confidence from last years team going into the NDSU game. The teams confidence this year feels no different. You act like the teams confidence right now means it's going to mean 6+ wins this year.

Confidence, culture, chemistry, and experience in the system all play a hell of a lot bigger role in football than you realize. And no, the staff didn't sound like it had any confidence last year. And the players all sound a hell of a lot more confident, and happy to be here.

But yes, the confidence to start was better than half way through when the team quit.

I have no idea how your coming to that conclusion about the start of last year compared to this year, but ok.

I fancy myself as a person who can read other people very well. To me it was obvious, especially in the case of Wally that last year none of the coaches were 'feeling it'. This year I will agree there is a better air about everyone, especially Rhoads. Which is what makes me optimistic about all of this. He should be the most pensive about hyping the situation, and I feel he's doing it more than anyone.

All I hear from Mangino is that we still need work. That's good news for a man like him. He's a work-a-holic. 'It still needs work' typically means ya it's good, but it's not great. Normally someone might turn a phrase like 'we are a long ways away', not 'well, positive, positive, positive, but it still needs work.' Most positive of all of this is Wally. He actually has a reason to smile now and relax.

Sure this is all conjecture, and may mean nothing in the end, but a positive attitude goes a long ways in a competetive environment.

Once again, this completely ignores the fact that McCarney took over the worst program in the nation and Rhoads took over a poor program, but not nearly the worst in the country.

Also, I don't care what you have to say about Mac having an easier schedule. We can't use the tough schedule excuse if we lose to FCS teams in back to back years.

McCarney almost always beat the teams he was supposed to. Rhoads doesn't always beat the teams he's supposed to, but he pulls off wins that should be losses. Neither of them is head and shoulders above the other.

I think you're right, but it's been a long time since the bolded part was true.

Not so sure. CPR did things DMac never did. Like beat Nebraska at Nebraska. Beat Texas at Texas. Upset the undefeated #2 team in the nation. IMO, all those things are the main reasons he is getting the opportunity to coach this fall.

I feel like the Nebraska and Texas Mccarney was facing was not the NU and UT Rhoads was up against. NU is nowhere near where it was in the 90s and lets be honest, who didnt beat Texas that year? That was probably texas's worst year in the last 30. Those wins were both fun, but as far as 'achievements' when looked back in hindsight they arent really as major. And we still havent repeated against texas despite the fact that theyve been in a historical lull.

This is the one thing giving me some hope. 2 years ago i went to the meet the coaches night and i could just listen to him and know he was down about what we were in for. Now there seems to be a lot more optimism all around, and i hope that's a well-founded optimism.

Agreed 100%. I hope he changes that this year.

Well, after going 5-19 and two FCS losses, it shouldn't be hard as almost any win will be of that variety. On that note, we would be dancing in the street over 6-6 and the Liberty Bowl in another 3.5 months. CPR is a great negotiator.

Good point. Dan Gable was a great Hawkeye wrestler who had success coaching at Iowa State.

Iirc, walden left Mac 3 guys who played pro.
