Interesting Stat

It still amazes me how we tossed Mcarney aside. I firmly believe f we would have kept him we'd have had a couple 8 or 9 win season since his departure

Just go back and review his career here. Other than 2000, there wasn't one season where he exceeded expectations. Dan had quite a few good teams here, yet still found a way to lose games he shouldn't and never win any games that he shouldn't.

I loved Dan as a guy, he was a great ambassador for the University, but there is nothing he ever did that makes me think, having to play all the South teams, that he would have had another 9 win season.

That being said, this stat says a lot about ISU and any coach we have. It's a huge uphill battle here. And it's a stat that shows why CPR got his extension that a lot of people are upset about. When someone comes in and does win games, you feel like you need to wrap them up. Kind of like a 25 year old virgin, when you finally do get laid, it's going to be true love for you.

If you followed ISU football in 2005, you should know why Dan isn't the coach here anymore. And if we suck again this year, we will be looking for a new coach. Can we just let the season play out now?

The talent that CPR inherited went 5-19 the previous two years to his arrival. And finished 4-8 three years before his arrival.

There were some decent players. But CPR did not inherit an extremely talented team. That first year CPR had the advantage of playing 4 non-conference games along with the easy Big 12 North schedule which did not have Oklahoma and Texas on it. And that team was extremely fortunate in the 9-7 victory over Nebraska which was unbelievable.

Loved the job DMac did here at ISU. But c'mon

I know you didn't say it here, but a lot of people continue to beat the drum that Nebraska totally gave that game away. ISU was lucky to get that many turnovers but if you watch them they also did a lot of things to create turnovers including positioning, stripping the ball, and hitting ball carriers hard.

Once kNU gave it up a couple of times that D could smell blood in the water and it was in the heads of the kNU players - a dangerous combination. It isn't the first time that an ISU D has created a ton of turnovers to beat a Lincoln team either. In 1976 ISU forced 8 Nebraska fumbles and intercepted one as well.

If CPR had as easy of schedules as Dan then CPR's winning percentage would blow his away. Dan had an extra win on each schedule since he didn't plan as many conference games, and he only had to play the good south teams every other year.
If Rhoads had to take over after Walden too, he would've had some dead years just like McCarney. You can't blatantly ignore the fact that McCarney took over possibly the worst program in the country. Rhoads was taking over a bad program, sure, but it was far better than the program McCarney inherited.

I did some research and found that ISU has only had 13 winning seasons in football the past 50 years. Over half of those 13 years we finished one game over .500. MCarney had four of them and Earle Bruce three. Walden had a couple 6-5 years and as we know CPR has had one. Let's hope to start winning season number 14 Saturday against the Panthers!

Let me get this straight you actually needed to do "research" to figure out ISU has been awful for a majority of the last 50 years?

I will save you further research... ISU was also pretty bad for the 68 years before that as well.

It's been said many times, but the 2005 team only winning 7 games was unforgivable. That team could (should?) have been 11-0 going into the Big 12 championship. 4 regular season losses included three losses on the road in OT (all after having a late lead) and a loss at home to Baylor... Baylor's first Big 12 road win EVER.

That being said, I like Dan. I like Paul. Both have done good things for this school, but under different circumstances. Both have beat the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers. Both have lost games they should have won. There's really no point in trying to prove that one is better than the other.

sorry that game was a total fluke. maybe we'll see it again in 40 years.

Every time I refresh the new posts page, I glance past this thread and it looks like "Interesting slut" to me. Either I need better glasses, or I need to lower the resolution of my screen.

Yeah, I love D Mac and appreciate what he did with what he had, but there were too many times that we'd have a lead and he'd play so conservatively, so hard to not lose the ball that he's lose the game. Trying to avoid turnovers turned into punts, which resulted in losses.

I was sad to see him go, but it needed to be done.

Agree. DMac did inherit Troy Davis. And to DMac's credit he utilized his talent.

Didn't know a non con game is an automatic win. It's not like Paul Rhodes has lost 2 straight games against an FCS team.

It is very interesting how seldom ISU has winning seasons, and for how many of them they had to get a former Iowa coach to accomplish that. Or a former Iowa player going way back to Clyde Williams. Could you post some stats on conference championships and who was the coach when the cyclones won them too please.

Just another "interesting" fact.

Since 1919 we have had 21 head coaches. Only one of those has a winning career record at ISU. Earle Bruce at 36-32.

Looks like if we have another bad season it's time to go out and find another Earl Bruce. I know it's not easy at ISU but when you get manhandled by FCS schools with half the facilities and budget, a history of losing and tough conference schedules sounds like lame excuses. Other schools with a history of losing have changed their programs with the right guy and we can too. CPR has this year to show us he can still be that guy.

Save that for the rivals board. This isn't it.

Hawk fan sees talk of the past. Hawk fan gets excited. Hawk fan makes fool of himself again.

That team definitely under performed, but 11-0? That's crazy.

The Baylor game and the Kansas game were both ugly losses. That said, I'm not going to fault McCarney for losing @ Nebraska in double OT (who finished 8-4). The Texas A&M win was fantastic, as were the Colorado and Iowa wins. It was a really great Cyclone team but expecting anything more than 9 wins was probably unlikely.

I am glad we forced DMac out. It needed to be done- after 12 years things were stale.

The more we learn of CPR's ability to "build" a program, the more it becomes a fallacy he is better than DMac. If CPR had the task DMac faced he would have failed miserably, whereas had a young DMac somehow been hired after Chizik he would look a lot better IMO.
