I did some research and found that ISU has only had 13 winning seasons in football the past 50 years. Over half of those 13 years we finished one game over .500. MCarney had four of them and Earle Bruce three. Walden had a couple 6-5 years and as we know CPR has had one. Let's hope to start winning season number 14 Saturday against the Panthers!

It still amazes me how we tossed Mcarney aside. I firmly believe f we would have kept him we'd have had a couple 8 or 9 win season since his departure
Is your name Phil Steele? McCarney was a good man. He couldn't recruit well and he was too reluctant to make staffing changes on offense.
I like Mac as much as the next guy, but he ain't winning 8 or 9 games a year playing the all the south teams every year.
CPR is better than McCarney.
You know McCarney started off 13-42 right? CPR has been a lot more successful than that and with much tougher schedules. McCarney also had a 2-10 season after he finally had a few good seasons. Overall CPR puts out much more competitive teams, something you will see again this year.
Dan deserves a lot of credit for bringing the program back to something that was fun to watch (from the depths of crappiness). Sure, he didn't face the gauntlet we have today, but he did well against what he faced .
Paul wouldn't have done any better if he had to follow Walden and Criner. The program had been a total mess for over a decade when McCarney took over. Also, how does CPR put out a much more competitive teams? Both coaches had their fair share of blow outs. Rhoads even had plenty when we were going 6-7 every year.

At least we all rehash this old argument again.
The talent that CPR inherited went 5-19 the previous two years to his arrival. And finished 4-8 three years before his arrival.
There were some decent players. But CPR did not inherit an extremely talented team. That first year CPR had the advantage of playing 4 non-conference games along with the easy Big 12 North schedule which did not have Oklahoma and Texas on it. And that team was extremely fortunate in the 9-7 victory over Nebraska which was unbelievable.
Loved the job DMac did here at ISU. But c'mon
CPR has a few his first year after inheriting a program back in the dumpster, and last year with a young decimated team. Dan had them every year. This years team will be back to competitive in all games, Dans would still be blown out. There's a reason Dan isn't with a good team now still.

And you mentioned the first and last year. Looks like plenty of games we were not competitive in. Doesn't look any less than McCarney's teams really.
Even during our 9-3 year in 2000 KState still blew us out. I think it was 50ish to 0 at halftime. I was counting how many times I had to go out for kick-off return team in the first half and it was more than in most complete games. I also remember Skaldany blowing a gasket on the defense at half time saying "If we don't come back and win this game the whole defense is going to run when we get back to Ames until I am tired of watching you run." Then Mac intergects and says "No that isn't going to happen". I remember thinking Skladany was on some good drugs if he thought we were coming back from 50ish - 0 halftime score.
If CPR had as easy of schedules as Dan then CPR's winning percentage would blow his away. Dan had an extra win on each schedule since he didn't plan as many conference games, and he only had to play the good south teams every other year.
Honestly you're just proving you don't know much about football other than the box score if you think Dan was better than CPR.
I think you're just proving that you believe the conspiracy that Rhoads teams never get blown out and we are competitive in every game we play, minus last year and 2009. I mean, how foolish is that? Having watched all those games, the ones I listed were not competitive.
I keep hearing about how Dan only had to play the good south teams every other year but that's really only the half of it. Baylor stunk, Mizzou stunk, KU stunk, Okie St stunk, A&M was never consistant, Nebraska was down for a good chunk of his time and Dan also had the benifit of Iowa stinking for a good 4-5 years. It is literally night and day as far as the strength of the teams we play now.
