SDW is transferring

Good luck to him. I really wished it could have worked out here. I wonder if he'll go closer to home and go to a place like Oakland, Detroit, directional Michigan, or if he will go to a power 5 school?

Because he sits a year wherever he goes (assuming D1). So it's better if he had not red-shirted here. He could have played at ISU in year 1. Not that would have. But he could. If you are going to red-shirt a year best it be the year you transfer where you absolutely aren't allowed to play at all.

Yes, but this would be his 3rd year playing here, so he'd still only have 2 to play 1. Now he can play 1 1/2.

I don't know if he wants to go back home to Michigan, but Drake could really use him. And he's a smart kid who would do fine with any increased academic standards that Drake might have.

Wish him the best. I hate losing players, but that's just the nature of the beast. SDW's been a great representative of Iowa State.

Still don't think redshirting should affect a player's ability to transfer and not lose a year.

Oakland and Dayton both offered him out of HS (via Rivals). Both would seem like a decent destination if he could land there.

Kind of wondered if he was going to transfer when he did not get on the floor against Southern after the big lead the team got to in the second half. He probably decided to transfer a while ago. Seems like a great kid and a great teammate, but he just never was able to beat out any of the guys that came in. Maybe he thought he had his chance after Kane left, and then BDJ just came in a took over.

I am sure he will find a place to play.

I'm not really surprised, but I still hate to see this. I think he has some real talent, there was just too much in front of him for him to get any real minutes.

Hopefully, he will find someplace where he can shine.

No, if he had a RS year he'd sit out a year and STILL have 2.5 years to play. You aren't eligible for a year after transferring, if you have a RS year you don't lose that year of eligibility. You get 5 years to play 4 seasons.

If you have a time machine..... If he hadn't redshirted he'd be a junior in the exact same position he is now.

The only difference would be his theoretical minutes his freshman year with would've been about zero.

I guess I'm not even sure how having a redshirt available effects mid year transfers. Not sure it can be used for two semesters in different school years. I'm pretty sure there was a lengthy, heated debate about this before on CF, but since it doesn't apply here, I'm not gunna bother looking it up.

I guess this is a good problem to have. Unlike a few years back under Greg when we had players we NEEDED to play leaving the program.
