Keep the coaches

Another problem we had recruiting a few years ago was kids not knowing if we were gonna be in the big east, mountain west or big 12. I remember current players questioning if they were going to stay if we were not in the big 12. Since that got settled we have done a much better job of getting impact guys.
Why did it affect us so much, but not Kansas State, and Baylor who were all in the same boat as us?

Btw coaching at Iowa State. Johnny Majors went 24-30 at Iowa State and now sits in the college football hall of fame. Back i. The 80's we fired Jim Criner and the savior was Jim Walden. In the 2000's we fired Dan and the savior was Gene Chizik. So yeah firing coaches has not paid off in the past at all. Bottom line is the payout is to much and the next guy will most likely suck at Iowa State as well.

Here's the deal with changing coaches:

If you change because you are having success and want more, that may be discontent (see Iowa and Tom Davis, LOL). But if your product sucks, you might as well take a chance on getting something better.

I really want to see Rhoads succeed at ISU, but the preparation level for the team looks horrible at times. I do think the conference realignment may have hurt recruiting and I think that is possibly a legit argument, but I think the whole approach to building football in Ames needs to change. We need something strategically different for building a team, otherwise we will always be behind the traditional powers who can do it the "normal" way because they are already miles ahead.

Snyder could win at Iowa State with the level of talent we have now, but maybe not the same players. I'm saying that because I don't think K-State is any more talented than we are, but they are better at developing that talent and more importantly they know exactly what they are looking for in the recruiting process.

The only thing I would look at if I were Rhoads is if Wally indeed retires, trying to bring in a DC who is known for Recruiting. i like Shane Burnham and won't be angry if he were promoted, but we need an injection of talent ASAP.

Changing the Head Coach will not help with the talent on the field. Our Offense had a bad day against a very good defense, but you could not have expected a young undersized defense to stop OU. Just look at the pics of Tom Farniok next to his brother, and that pretty much sums it up the size difference, and why they ran completely at will.

People bring up Orr as an example of a successful transformation. His winning % at ISU was .521. What he brought was a new attitude to ISU.

ISU built Hilton (facilities issues) and then went out and financially committed to the head coach. I read posters urging a new football hire with the expectation of getting some coordinator and pay $2M/yr. That salary would put us at around 50th in Division I in 2013. The average Big 12 head coach salary in 2013 was $3.2M.

If a change is to be made, ISU needs to go for broke and pay for a proven winner and staff. That likely means spending another $2M/yr for a head coach and another $1M/yr for assistant coaches. That also means there has to be a way to pay for it. There are two alternatives: increase revenue or decrease expenses. To pay for an additional $3M in football salaries would require an increase of between $50 and $60 per seat for football. The alternative is to drop additional sports.

I do not believe the ISU fanbase will support what needs to be done to change ISU football.

Baylor, KSU, TCU, and WVU were in just as bad of a place as we were, seems like they weathered the storm just fine.

Lol, seriously? You've got to do better than this boss.

First TCU was never in a BCS conference, they had just joined the Big East. They were going to actually ascend from MWC to BCS status. Second WV was actually in the Big East with realistic dreams of the SEC SEC SEC.

Baylor, God bless them, is like Iowa State. They are a coat tail school, completely dependent on others for their survival. They also had a transcendent talent, on and off the field, they were able to use to change the entire culture of their program, and improve improve their lot in life. It was kind of the effect that I'm sure mac had dreamed that Troy Davis could have had in those back to back 2K years.

But, and I know we don't seem to have any middle ground here, they had an old Texas high school coach that had already won at Houston, who is better than our coach. And their low level recruits are better than our low level recruits based on geography. And of course they did have a bunch more tradition than we do.

K State has Bill Snyder, nothing more needs to be said.

If Wally retires they need to start over with the defensive staff. Get someone in here who can put their guys in as coaches. I haven't seen anything from our defense sans Knott/Klein that suggests this staff is irreplaceable. Get the Cotton-Moya's/Tribunes/etc. of the world some teachers who may be able to develop them.

Everyone always brings up Bill Snyder but he is a once in a lifetime hall of fame coach. Most coaches that will take our job use this as the next rung on the ladder.

It is like you are arguing with yourself.
You have provided nothing besides you taking offense to criticism of CPR and his program. No reason for why the criticism is flawed. Your repeated dodging of the issue is quite the white flag.

You are a first class tool. For one thing, I haven't posed any argument what so ever in this thread, and especially not to myself. I'm just dogging on the self purported "winner", and his idea of how anyone that disagrees with him somehow embodies a "loser mentality". Second, I'd like you to point out ANY issue that I've dodged. Ask me a question directly and you'll get an answer. Third, judging by your tone, it is my guess that you have zero idea of where I stand in relation to the CPR situation. I, unlike several of you angry and tortured souls, don't feel the need to express where I stand in regards to this issue on an almost hourly basis each and every day.

More of the same I see.
What are your other monikers besides this one and awd?

Snyder has used the vast Kansas Community Colleges or JUCO talent in his state to fill his needs. These schools attract some of the best talent in the nation. Coach Snyder always get the first pick, we still have to sell ISU to the athletes. Most of our talent is here because they have connected with our coaches. Our fans are also important because the players are impressed with the 90% of those who support them ALL the TIME, called CYCLONE NATION.

Go Cyclones!

It's frustrating because the current state of the Big 12 has Baylor, TCU, K state at the top and Texas at the bottom. Why is it such a crazy thought to try and hire someone new and hope they turn out like Briles? it only takes one. I don't think were asking for much. Most of us just want to go to a bowl each year and be competitive in conference play. Its not that hard when there are 32 bowl games... PR just can't get it done... we let up 41 first downs on 102 plays yesterday.

I absolutely disagree with the idea that we can never have a winning coach. We are at a disadvantage for reasons mostly beyond our control, but we are definitely not destined to be losers forever. We're getting solid talent now, and as soon as we get coaches that can develop talent better and play some defense, we'll have a real chance at being a good program. We truly aren't that far away from being a perennial 7-8 win team.

Every year, we have Texas Tech, Kansas, Iowa, WVU, Okie State, TCU, Kansas State, one FCS team and a decent D1 team. None of those teams should blow us out. We've beaten all of those teams in the last few years aside from Kansas State, and we're almost always one possession away from beating the Wildcats. I really believe that, if our defense can step up (new DC please) we can win 7 games next year. Our offense will be really good IMO, with three really good WR's and solid RB's, along with a senior QB with 2 seasons of game time under his belt. Our O-line will be interesting...

I have faith that a new DC will help our crappy defense and that Mangino can turn the offense into a consistent 35 ppg team.

The offense was a blitzkrieg. It looked like Hur Katrina blowing through JTS. The wind we called Mama Mia, We Surrender. Looked like the Four Horsemen from OU. Looked like our military taking Iraq in early 00s. Yes, it was a game of beauty for OU fans in the stands. Makes their trip to Ames worthwhile. They never worried after the first minute of the game. Can Blum please retract his article from last week?

I just don't think firing Rhoads and the staff accomplish anything right now. Can you imagine the debacle the offseason would be? I'm on the boat for 1 more year of Rhoads. I'm just as tired of the on field product the past 2 years but firing Rhoads this year is not the answer.

Criner tried and got ISU on NCAA probation for six years. :spinny:
