Peak Iowa Fan

TBH - I only hear the superbowl comment when one side is talking about what the other side is saying.

We think the other side thinks this so we perpetuate it.

If you follow their gameday thread, a few of their fans were saying they would beat us badly, but others said that they would beat us in a close game because we suck all year but, for this one game, we play out of our minds. Similar to the Super Bowl excuse. I think it is really their only wasy to explain that they lose to a team with a worse record. Disregarding the obvious fact that we have a WAY harder schedule than them. It would be nice if we could also play Care Bear U. and Barbie State.

The thought process that it must have taken to get to the point that you actually believe that statement must be entertaining. Really don't get the "We are the better team at the end of the day" argument. At the end of the day you lost the head-to-head match-up, aka your one chance to prove you are actually better.

Something I also want to discuss is the "Congrats, you won your super bowl" comments. I have grown up in other rivalries (Texas vs Texas A&M, South Carolina vs Clemson...Dad an A&M alum and brother a Clemson alum), and this is by far the stupidest response to a loss I have ever witnessed. And the weird thing is I hear it over and over again. It’s not just some subset of stupid Iowa fans, it’s practically systemic. Is there some original source for this remark, and why did anyone who heard this remark think "Yup, that'll show 'em!" Really digs me to the core every time I hear it, mostly because I utterly despise stupid people.

The funny part is it likely originated from the game really being Iowa's superbowl under Hayden Fry. The foundation to him every year was to keep ISU under Iowa. Essentially, you're never going to be the best team in the country if you're not the best team in the state. Then ol' raisinface started going downhill and ISU got Dan, who was interested in the rivalry, and Iowa got Kirk, with his elitist snobbery attitude, who didn't put much emphasis on the game, because in his mind, ISU was below his interest (my extrapolation there). Right in that time frame was when ISU was having absolute crap seasons, but started beating Iowa, and the Iowa fans could only soothe themselves by saying that ISU players cared, and Iowa players didn't because they were so far above ISU.

Their fan base believes that they are entitled to victory because they believe they have superior talent. They can not process an outcome that does not match their perception. Just because you believe something doesn't make it true.

The Super Bowl thing is hilarious, they just can't come up with any other reason that they would lose. You know, maybe like:
Coaching
Talent
Heart
Effort
Play Calling
Time Management

Nah... this game is ISU's entire season for the coaches, players, fans, etc...

Hell... go to a game at JTS sometime when Iowa isn't the opponent and look at how empty the place is. It's a real eye opener. :jimlad:

Iowa fans are utterly convinced it's still the 80s. I honestly doubt most of them have any idea Rhoads has gone to three bowls at Iowa State. They don't have any idea how good any of their competition is in present day. Probably still think Michigan and Penn State are the toughest games on their schedule.

Huh, what? Where did they go???

Joe Pa has those boys ready to play this year! Gonna win it all!

No Penn State. No Ohio State. No Michigan.

But hey, Maryland is coming to town! How 'bout those Terps!

Anybody? Anybody?

Dear God look at that lineup. And yet they still puff their chests out about how they can lose to us and often have a better record.

Well, duh. NDSU may very well be the 3rd best team of anyone on that schedule - and that's not even an exaggeration.

The Superbowl BS has been perpetuated ever since Iowa started losing to ISU on a regular basis. Hawks were so entrenched in the 15 year streak that they convinced themselves that all ISU ever cared about was beating Iowa.

We beat them 5 years in a row because it's the only game that we care about, not because their teams sucked for some of those years or we had better players (Seneca in particular) on our team.

Part of the problem is that the Big 10 is so mediocre that Iowa can beat with their other 3 non-con games (sometimes) beat Indiana, Illinois, NW, Purdue, Minnesota, and now Maryland and Rutgers, and end up with a better record than ISU, even though we played more games vs teams with a pulse.

Iowa fans are forever stuck in the 15 year streak. They are the better team no matter what. They will always have some excuse like "Superbowl", "Injuries", "Refs", "KF's conservative offense", "Iowa is better at the end of the year". Anything to not admit that they just got ******* beat! Seriously you turds. It happens.

The 1980's thing is so true. Aren't we an even 10-10 in the last 20 games with Iowa? Pretty much an even rivalry but Hawk fans live in a Hot Tub Time Machine where they return time and time again to the era of the 15 game winning streak.
