They have b the past, but I think they would have to leave that behind in the face of 16 team conferences. The TV money and the ramifications of being left out are just too big to ignore.

I don't see why they couldn't keep a non-con relationship if they needed to.
 
But what about the Duke-UNC rivalry? Will not Dickie be upset if UNC goes west?

No doubt that UNC, Virginia and Virginia Tech would both be tough to pry away from the ACC, but if the conference is crumbling around them, they would have to seriously weigh their options or risk being left out of the new look BCS. Texas A&M overcame in-state political difficulties and Nebraska looked the other way on a century of history, so anything is possible.

I always thought V-Tech getting in the ACC was more similar to how Baylor ended up in the Big 12. The schools aren't joined at the hip, but at the time the ACC expanded, Virginia Tech was able to apply enough political pressure on Virginia to bully their way into the conference.

Virginia Tech is in a slightly different boat in that the Governor of Virginia at the time (Mark Warner) pulled a lot of political strings and spent a lot of political capital to get Virginia Tech in the ACC over Syracuse. I don't think the state house would look kindly on Virginia Tech leaving Virginia behind in a less desirable conference less than a decade later.

People said all of these things about UT/A&M.

I think that when the rubber meets the road, those ties can be broken.

What's likely is that the ACC would remain as some second tier football, first tier basketball school. UVA doesn't really care that much about sports anyhow, and as long as it remained a strong academic league, they'd get by just fine.

Keep in mind that when the ACC first expanded, Miami and VA Tech were the best programs in the Big East. Its likely that VA Tech was a major target to begin with.

Right. But it wouldn't surprise me at all. The realignment bull**** has created a lot of classless ***holes with no shame and interest in only one thing, TV football money.

I thought aTm set the bar low and then Missouri out ***holed them. Nothing could shock me now.

I think the ATM/Mizz situation is WAY different than the potential VaTech situation. ATM and Mizz were in a solid conference and caused instability by being little ******* about everything.

If the ACC is truly cumbling at the time, VaTech would have almost no choice but to look out for themselves. They have a very good Athletic Program that could be decimated if they were left out of one of the future power conferences.

There's a big difference between going to another conference because you are jelouse, petty, or looking for a bigger payday, and going to another conference because you HAVE to in order to remain relavent.

Ironic that you bring this up and someone also mentions Baylor. If you replace VT with Baylor in this scenario you can plug Anne Richards (Baylor grad) in for Mark Wagner and you've got how Baylor got into the Big 12.
 
Virginia will be just fine - if the Big 10 wants to go to 16 then Virginia and Maryland are prime targets - both are AAU schools. add in 2 of 3 of Rutgers, Georgia Tech, and/or Notre Dame (after help has frozen over first) and the Big 10 has their 16.
