Big 12 Expansion rumors from around the web:

I found both of the following rumors on WVU's Blue and Gold News' excellent Big 12 site. The first one is a re-publish of a rumor from a TTech poster who put the following on a Florida State site:

"Another update...

Again, I have no sources on the ACC side just the Big 12 side.

The Big 12 has started to "float" a tv package revenue at the following ACC schools to try to entice them joining a "new" conference:

-FSU, Clemson, Miami (to appease FSU), and Louisville (bridge to WV). The tier I/II tv rights are estimated at $25-30M PER SCHOOL! That does not include Tier III rights which will be retained by the institution.

ND is the key to everything... the Big 12 will push hard for ND to move their non-football sports to the Big 12. It is not ideal but it blocks the ACC which then allows for the Big 12 raid into the ACC.

Swofford is pushing HARD for a much larger payout/school on the current ESPN contract (after the additions of Pitt and SU). The issue is that he "shot his load to early" in the original contract and ESPN has a ton of leverage. If he can only get another $1-2mil per school the ACC is at risk (or if ND goes to B12 for olympic sports).

Remember ESPN owns B12 Tier I contract ALONG with the Longhorn Network... they are heavily invested in the Big 12. Also, I have heard that they LOVE the idea of a conference that includes Florida, Texas, and other parts of the SE (SC, part of GA, KY). The ad revenue would be huge...therefore allowing for a huge payout to teams.

Most of the institutions of the Big 12 are hoping that they can pull of the "Southeast extension" but have a back-up plan of adding Louisville, BYU and ND (non-football). With Plan B the estimate is still over $20M per institution for Tier I/II (which will beat the ACC but fall below SEC and B1G).

Also, the changes to the BCS are a huge factor in the negotiations. The Big 12 is on board for the "champions only" to the final 4 along with the Pac and B1G. With 6 "major" conferences and only 4 slots, strength of schedule will be back in play. The Big 12, SEC and probably B1G will always have a team in the final four. The ACC is the odd man out. The Big 12 will use that as a nugget for CU and FSU.

Again, just what I've heard."

The other rumor comes from a WVU poster, Mounty71, who a lot of the guys know as having insider information on that end:

I have direct access, which is one step closer than I was previously. I'm on a fairly tight leash, i.e I know more than I'm allowed to reveal. I will admit that I've told my father everything I know

Anyway, my "guy" knows that I post here, but I've agreed to never reveal too much or names, dates, times, locations, etc. It's hard sometimes, but I do try to confirm (to the best of my knowledge) what others may say is going on.

As for how accurate my "guy" is... well, it's still up for debate. I see things posted from time to time on here from others that are spot on with what I've been told. But he/she has no reason to lie to me. And I'm not foolish enough to think I'm important enough to be used by the AD or anyone else to post false information.

I feel comfortable posting the following:

  • Clemson/FSU are talking with Big 12. The talks are pretty serious, particularly with Clemson
  • ND is talking to the Big 12 - UT is leading this and laying it on thick
  • ND chances of joining have gone from "not likely" in October/November to "encouraging and improving" - that was about three weeks ago
  • Clemson is closer to jumping than FSU
  • FSU has repeatedly stated they want to bring Miami with them if they jump
  • Clemson's biggest concerns are jumping alone and travel costs
  • Maryland is in the pool, not very deep, but in
  • Something happened over the past two weeks to knock Louisville down the list of potential candidates (I don't know what)
  • ND wants at least one northeastern school to come wiht them if they join. The list posted above looks good to me, but I can only confirm that I've been told about BC but no one looked for it to actually happen (BC jumping to Big 12). My personal choice would be Pitt (but have no information).
  • Some have posted that FSU/Clemson would jump if OL was named Big 12 Commissioner. I haven't been told that and haven't heard a thing about it. I've been repeatedly told OL is very happy as AD and isn't looking to leave for a while.
I have decided to gleefully spread these rumors in the hope that I could possibly astroturf this event into being. It would be a great league and a huge money maker for athletics at ISU.

Assuming they don't decide to kick out ISU....

Cue freak out in

Just thinking about Florida State, Clemson, Miami is a little overwhelming. Add in Notre Dame, even for just non-football, and it all seems surreal.

I imagine things will become serious with the ACC schools when the final details of the deal with ESPN become more firm. If the deal remains less than $15M per year, I don't see how a school like FSU, which is operating in the red, can ignore the vastly greater revenue available in the Big 12.

Reportedly the June time-frame is about when things will solidify one way or the other. ESPN holds a ton of power here. Hopefully ESPN brings down the ACC.

Joking or not, Iowa State would not get kicked out of a major conference. Revenue sports are successful enough, and its a good academic school. Big 12 would NEVER kick out Iowa State.

why don't we add tulsa and colorado state to the conference. air force and byu would also be good additions.

I saw elsewhere a guy talking about Temple getting kicked out of the Big East 8 years ago, seems most if not all the big time conferences have bylaws that schools need to meet for membership. And they are so minimal to meet that if a conference tried kicking someone out, there would be huge lawsuits.

The Big East asked Temple to leave and Temple obliged. That is about the only way a school can get kicked out in this day and age of big money college football.

As to the rumors, bring on Clemson, FSU, Miami and someone else! I would like to addition of Pitt as that would be a great add for WVU.

What you're saying is if the Big 12 were a sorority, ISU is the slightly less attractive girl who brings up the average GPA...

If anyone doubts this, consider that we have been looking at adding Tulane because of their Academic Status (and of course New Orleans). If Iowa State was available and the Big 12 were looking to add a team, they would be considered before Louisiville and perhaps even WVU. Now, add the fact that the remaining original Big 8 members have 100 year rivalries with Iowa State and you guys have nothing to worry about.

Time to one up Big Ten, ACC, SEC, and PAC Ten - we are going to 20. We want to absorb most of the ACC.

Mizzou amped to join elite SEC, but does it know what it's getting into? - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com News, Scores, Stats, Schedule and BCS Rankings

Big Boy Football.

That sounded so strange. What do the Mizzou Tigers know of Mike the Tiger or Rammer Jammer or War Eagle? What does it all mean? With 14 SEC teams, it could mean more world domination. It certainly means more game inventory. It means the SEC can now plan for a network of its own. The Big Ten has set the standard with its successful endeavor that could shoot off $4 billion-$5 billion in rights fees and profits by the year 2027.
It means Pinkel was right. Mizzou will have to invest. It comes into the SEC 11th in both revenue and expenses; 12th in the 14-team league in expenses directly allocated to football. (Figures provided by the Birmingham News.)
"Honestly our budget has never been a problem," Pinkel said.

More grist for the mill:

Update on Big 12 Expansion | March

Basically, BYU and Louisville have asked for consideration, and the conference is waiting to see if the ACC tree bears any fruit. FSU and Clemson, being the primary targets, want to see who the Big 12 hires as commissioner before deciding.

If you want to take this guy's word for it....

Part of me still wants just mid-west schools... but I'm a stickler for tradition. Geographically, it just all seems weird.

I'm with you. WVU, Louisville, and one more still kind of made sense to me. WVU+FSU & Clemson, while adding stronger schools, just doesn't feel as right to me.

Its one of the things that made missouri leaving unfortunate. Add louisville to what we've got now coming in and we'd be set and at 12.
