What are your ISU Football W-L Expectations now?

My expectations are to compete for a bowl game year in and year out. That doesn't mean I expect Rhoads to go to 10 straight bowls but be competing for a stop year in and year out. Once every 3-4 years, I want us to win 8+ games. And maybe (fingers crossed), we can go for a 10 win season or 2 under Rhoads.

I think maybe the best way to put it is expect:
1. Every recruiting class to play in a bowl at least as many times as they don't, and
2. Every player to play on at least one 8+ win team before graduating.

Once upon a time (1994?), my son and I witnessed Iowa State play Rice on a dreary October day. Rice was having a bad year (as usual) and they still thumped us in front of probably 20,000 fans (or so) at Cyclone Stadium.

I decided right there, that if we ever became competitive to the degree that I thought we could win any game we played, I would never complain about coaching decisions, player mistakes, outcomes, wins/losses, etc.

We are there and I am happy.

edited to add: ... and knowing that the hawks are wringing their collective hands in obvious anxiety is the icing on the cake. I'm sorry I feel that way, but I can't help it. I've dealt with too much verbal crap from them for far too long.

I think I remember seeing that game on TV, being played on the old school astro-turf carpeted field. I was young enough that I hadn't even cared about football in the least yet, but still knew that they shouldn't have been losing to freaking Rice that day.

Could have been a game earlier in the 90's that I'm thinking of, though.

I like to think we have realistic expectations.

1. Beat UNI 99 times out of 100.
2. Beat IA 51 times out of 100.

win 99% of the games we are favored in which is not many.
Continue upward progression beat a few teams that were not supposed to win. I expect energy and continual upgrade in on field talent. As far as bowls go we should compete for bowls every year especially if we get to an 8 game conference schedule. I'm good with the bowls in (NY) Insight, Independence etc and would like to compete for an Alamo bowl every 5-6 years maybe a BCS bowl every 10? if we don't make a bcs no problem. Good teams with good charicter good support.

Is there any place to get the cumulative figures for entire coaching staffs? Just curious if we pay our assistants on par with, say, Baylor, KSU, WVU, & TCU.

Haven't been able to find sum totals by schools, but the USA Today does break it down individually here (head coaches there as well): Salary analysis of 2010 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches - USATODAY.com

You can also sort it and manually add things up which I did below (all teams have 9 asst's; bonuses were not included in my numbers and those vary widely from 0 to six figures sometimes).

Iowa State Big 12 Wally Burnham 300,000
Iowa State Big 12 Tom Herman 300,000
Iowa State Big 12 Bill Bleil 150,000
Iowa State Big 12 Bobby Elliott* 150,000
Iowa State Big 12 Curtis Bray 120,000
Iowa State Big 12 Courtney Mess. 120,000
Iowa State Big 12 Kenith Pope 120,000
Iowa State Big 12 Shane Burnham 100,000
Iowa State Big 12 Luke Wells 100,000

ISU Total: $1.46 million (Iowa's total is $1.65 million)

Baylor is unknown (had one guy at $336,000/yr)
Kansas: $1.95 million
K-State: $1.56 million
Mizzou: $2.07 million
OU: $2.65 million
Okie State: $2.54 million
Texas: $3.02 million
A&M: $1.67 million
Tech: $1.96 million

So as of 2010, we were in the basement, but I'd imagine that will change with Rhoads's new contract...

Don't get me wrong, I do think it is possible. However, you have to realize that ISU will probably always be at a disadvantage $ wise comapred to the big boys of the conference. Texas, OU, and Okie State will always have more money and resources than us. That will make it very difficult to consistently win 8,9, or 10 games a year.

Can we have a dream season where we win 10 or 11 games in a year? Absolutely. I have a much harder time believing that we can do that on a consistent basis. That being said, I really hope that I am proven wrong

I agree that winning 10+ games a year is a pipedream. But K-State has pretty much the same disadvantages as we do. We just need our Bill Snyder to take us to bowl games nearly every year and build on that. I think there is no doubt Paul Rhoads cna be that man.

Great to see CPR get this deal. I think its a good move for all involved.

I pose this question to you: What are your W-L expectations for ISU football, given this contract?

I am not one of those people that feels a coaches worth to a program is all about Wins. ISU had a .500 season this year and had the best attendance year in school history, seeing 50k or more people in the stands for every home game for the first time ever.

There is a GREAT deal of value in that for the athletic department, so I think this sort of contract is certainly in line.

However, one thing I have noticed with Kirk's increased salary, is that certain win totals which have in the past been acceptable, are no longer acceptable to a certain segment of the fanbase.

With these types of dollars, a certain segment of the fanbase will have a quicker trigger to be more critical...can't say how large that segment will be.

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that you're troll and pretty soon (if not already) there will be a thread on your lame *** website about what a joke ISU fans low expectations are for W-Ls.

How's that Big XII death clock ticking Jon?

Nice job by the hawks going 0-fer vs. UNL and ISU this year. Get used to it.

I like my chances with TCU minus Andy Dalton over MIZZOU and have you seen who WVU played this season? Not saying they're bad, but aTm is a better program

A&M is a better "program" in terms of history, size of fanbase, etc than TCU or WVU, but both of those programs would stuff A&M's **** back up it's *** over the past decade or so, in terms of actually playing football.

I'm not sure a new contract changes my expectations. I'd like to thik we can be a consistent bowl participant. Consistently winning 6-8 games with few a 9 or maybe 10 win season every 8-10 years. Oh yea, and continue to cause Iowa fans grief.

I have pretty simple expectations because we are playing in the Big 12 and will always have a top 20 SOS rating.

I want to be competitive in every game we play, with a chance to win if the ball bounces the right way and the games are fun to go to!

We are getting closer and closer to my expectations each year in the last three, and I think it will continue to build.

My thought is Kirk Frenz is overpaid and Iowa is about to become a pimple on ISU's butt.

There you go.

Not trying to be a ******, but as long as Kirk is at Iowa making the big bucks no ISU fans are going to complain that CPR overpaid, regardless of his win totals. This thread has just reinforced this belief for me.

It's not so much the win - loss record with Kirk as it is the head-scratching losses. If we can continue to improve, even slightly, and avoid the embarassing losses I'll be happy.

Always? Like 2010, 2009, 2008....like those years?

To me this says what KF thinks of his assistants. Talks about going elsewhere to get more $$$, but leaves his assistants at a combined half his salary. Whereas CPR's assistants were making more than him in his old deal and probably close to equal with new one. Once again shows the class of CPR.

In KF's defense he needs all the money he can get to help get his family out of publicly subsidized housing.

kind of depends on how the BIG12 grows or stays put. If we go back to divisions, I think ISU should be around 7 wins / year. If they stay in the round robin, i think it drops to 6. Some years (like in a year or 2) when you have a class of kids play together i think you have to think 9-10 are possible. I think with what CPR is building here, being middle to upper 2/3's of the conference should be consistent and playing in a bowl game 3/4 years should be expected. Then every 4-5 years i think we need to be in position to play in the Alamo or Cotton bowl.

Lets face it the Big 12 is going to be tough to ever have the success that Iowa did in the B1G (2 BCS appearances). But I don't think its out of the question to win enough games to get to play on New Years Day once or twice a decade.

LOL. Good stuff.
