Gary Payton II?

The NBA connections in play are probably less to get him to the league, but more of the fact that Gary I probably personally knows Fred and that if there is anyone that can teach his son to round out his game (shooting) it would be Hoiberg. I would love him as a preferred walkon. In the videos he is all over the court, good hands, and very athletic.
 
I live in CA and have friends that I have known for years still ask me occasionally "are you from Ohio?" or "you went to school in Indianna, right?". Trust me - People outside the midwest mix up Iowa all the time.

John Neal was awarded a scholarship after his soph year I think....He was also a lot better shooter then people give him credit for, he shot 42% from the field and has the same percentage behind the arc his senior year....he did strugle his Junior year though....he was a great pretty good defender.

Thanks. I remember everyone always raving about him being our best man to man defender. Didn't he hit a huge shot to beat Iowa or something one year?

If you were pretty young back in John Neals day, than you are still pretty young. That was just a few years ago.

I spoke to a recruiting expert about Payton jr. Here is what he said about him. Said he is a lock down defender. Can see the court real well and can dish. He did said he has no ability to knock down a jump shot. Thought he was giong to be a prefered walkon at The University of Washington and that somehow Fred might have used his NBA connection to get him to walkon at Iowa State. Said he was not sure about the ISU thing though.

Pretty much the exact same description as Jeffrey Jordan and how he played at Illinois. Kid was a very good defender, couldn't knock down shots to be a quality starter though. Started out as a walk-on, not sure if he was ever scholarship.

Peyton was obviously a great player, if he were playing today I think he'd be good but not great on defense. Refs of that era let guards (especially all-star guards) rape the players they were defending on the perimeter. Peyton and Stockton took advantage of this the best because they were heady players. All that said, I would love to see GP in the stands at some ISU games.

Also can't believe I read an 11 page thread on this site with absolutely no answers to a question.

So did GP say Iowa State and mean Ohio State? What's up with this? Anyone?
