Lay off Pollard

My guess is if Mac had a winning record this year with an NCAA appearance, the blame Pollard folks would have magically forgotten any misteps Pollard has taken before. Give him a break. I have faith that he will make a good decision for this program. If he fails, it hurts him professionally and personally way more than it hurts you.

I can see that, I just didn't understand the OP claiming a victory for Pollard based on our wrestling team, women's basketball team and going to a bowl game. Those aren't unprecideted occurences here. I am behind Pollard, don't get me wrong, I was just playing devil's advocate (aka trying to duplicate a MontyBurns) argument just for the sake of making an argument.

Agree. I am a JP fan, but some of these "accomplishments" credited to JP are waaaaay overstated. WBB and VB are successful primarily because of our great coaches and JP had nothing to do with that.

And people act as if we never had facility improvements. But the IPF for FB is a great facility.

JP is doing a good job, but his performance needs to be kept in perspective. His hiring of Chiz, Cael and GM have been roundly unsuccessful. GMac contract was flat out moronic. JP's attitude and ability to increase NCC has been commendable. No way he should be in the discussion on getting canned.

Gene was offered the job from the school with the largest athletic budget in the country. Who has come calling on Jamie?

Yeah Im sure AD's get poached all of the time. :jimlad: Gene probably saw some benefit to the ol' resume and checked it out. Who wouldnt?

You forgot a step. He didn't leave here for Ohio State, he left here for ASU, and as far as I know Arizona State has never had the largest athletic budget in the country.

I guess we ISU should give back that basketball practice facility. It didn't help much anyway.

Maybe we should build a new Men's basketball coaching facility. You know.... an area where the coaches can practice and work on their coaching skills? Anybody else notice how poorly we handled two opportunities to win a close game last night?

This staff and team has proven that when the chips are down and it is time to make a clutch play they look disorganized and have no ability to execute. This is not just on the staff but the players as well. It reminded me of the Northwestern & UNI games. Pathetic.

Pollard is to blame for this mess of a basketball program.

Football program is at about the same level right now as when he took over. Huge assist to Auburn for taking Chiz off JP's hands.

Pollard is great at business and fund raising. Not so great at hiring coaches. Absolutely incompetent with contract extensions.

That's saying it like it is!

Who has he extended other than Fennelly? Did Chizik get one?

Like Bill Fennelly's contract extension?

you're right - JP hasn't left us high and dry for a different school.

On top of that Gene Smith left us in a huge financial hole that BVDV had to clean up (aka cut baseball). Gene was all about adding to his resume. It didn't matter what he left ISU like. I have no doubt that Pollard will leave ISU better than he found it...budget-wise, facilities-wise, competition-wise. What else can you ask for?

I think he is referring to the automatic contract extensions for GMAC. That was a bad deal for ISU. To answer your question.... yes... Chizik did get a contract extension right after the final game of his second season. 2 weeks later he was the new head coach at Auburn.

Yes. After his 2nd year.

But if he's referring to Greg getting extended, he better check his facts - as that was contractual.

So, did we get a bigger buyout because of that? I don't remember that. Would seem almost worth it if we did.

I don't see the bad record of extensions by Pollard.

JP is not a problem. JP is a very good AD despite what the naysayers say.

The sweetheart bball contract is the problem. It was way over the top on security for the coach with the Wayne Morgan scholarship problem. How much payola did he really need to come to Ames? Nine years? Who in the world drafted that contract is the one that should be rung up on the pole. Where else is someone in this coaching profession is getting a nine year contract in moving up to a higher level? Did Lickliter get a nine year free pass although it looks like he needs it also?

Folks, Wayne ran a loose ship and we looked disheveled as we ran all over the court. We thought we were getting an organized floor play team. Maybe we did when Juri was around as we were able to get the ball inside. Now, we cannot hit a three pointer to save our lives and we have difficulty getting good position inside. What has happened to our offense in the last two years? We only had twenty turnovers last night. We only threw the ball through someone's legs at a critical time a second time. We even had three or four different chances to close out the game.

The old contract could have been redone to be made more lucrative if things had improved on the floor the first season of this regime.

The problem is we do not have someone making the poroper decisions at the end of the men's bball games.

Jamie flat out screwed up the Wayne Morgan situation and made a bad situation worse by pulling the trigger too soon, then having a poor platform for negotiating McD's contract. Talk about leaving our Bball program in a financial straight-jacket, now Jamie can afford to fire his original mistake.

I do think fans should can it on the Chizik thing as far as putting blame on Pollard. Everyone loved the hire, looked great.

No one anticipated...

- Gene would make poor assistant coach decisions (although I think this should be part of the interview)
- Gene wouldn't be able to manage games
- Gene was selling us a bowl full of lies wanting to be here
- Gene would be so crass with the players and not be able to consistently motivate

I can't fault Jamie for offering an extension simply because you want to support your HC...and we all knew the transition was going to be tough. Need to have support (aka, years in contract) behind a coach for recruiting. It was either extend him or make a change, IMO.

I agree - and Jamie needs to be accountable; he negotiated the contract.

Never mind who he hired, but if you think ISU was going to get a coach with a resume without security in the contract you are crazy.

When a program goes from Floyd to Eustachy to Morgan to ________ in a matter of years, you're going to have to offer up something in security to lure a qualified candidate.

Security in coaching contracts is also very important for recruiting.

He is held accountable. You dont think his superiors know this? You dont think Jamie knows this?
