Lay off Pollard

How can anybody give credit to JP for the CPR and Jackson hires? Both of these guys lobbied hard for the ISU jobs. The only reason we have CPR is because Auburn took Chiz off our hands, otherwise we'd still have Chiz 5 more years thanks to JP's extension. And JP seemed to be trying to hire anybody but KJ, even though he was the obvious and best choice and lobbied hard for the job from the beginning. And the Chiz hire was not a good hire when we had Brian Kelly waiting in the wings, no matter how the JP fans try to spin it. Basketball is self evident, JP fired a coach having some pretty decent success for a coach that has taken ISU basketball to lows not seen since Ken Trickey well over 30 years ago. If it weren't for some unbelievably good luck that brought us CPR, our two major sports would be in shambles so how can JP get anything but a D so far, and that's being generous.

Great resume ? If he was so great how come no other college wanted him ? Why would you hire a Coach that has never won a NCAA tournament game. Time after time ISU looks clueless for the last minute of the game....

did Chiz sign it?

If not....mistake avoided.

and JP possibly hit a homer with CPR

JP didn't "hit" anything of the sort. As Cyko pointed out, CPR ws unemployed, and aggressively pursued the job. All JP did was answer the phone. I wonder who his other candidates were, frankly.

What about the Chizik extension?

With Chizik's extension: probably Chizik told JP that he would get demote his buddies and hire qualified assistants because it looks like that he had learnt his lesson by hiring Gus Malzahn as OC in Auburn.

JP had to conciously make the decision to hire Rhoads and Jackson, no matter how hard they lobbied. Have you ever been to a job interview? You "lobby" yourself, and hope that you present yourself as the best candidate. Then the guy who will be your boss makes the decision.

I also wondered who were the other candidates to replace WM. During the chat with Randy Peterson from the Rag, he said there were only 2 candidates who disclosed that they interviewed (for the job the other one was Jeter) but it was unclear who else was/were interviewed, if any ?

+1 - will you marry someone you don't like just because the person keeps on calling you and asking you ?

How can you possibly not blame Pollard for Greg Mcdermott.

Just the facts here. JP:

1. Fired Wayne Morgan (a fairly successful coach in his 3 seasons, but definitely no Bill Self)
2. Hired Greg in 2 days
3. Gave him a 9-yr contract

I like JP overall but he definitely screwed the pooch with our MBB program.

Your right, I should have said "Pollards accomplishments have out weighed this (1) bad decision." But, at the time, everyone thought GMac was a great coach. I just don't understand how GMac got such a great contract? The guy has done nothing.

You might marry that person if you'd been jilted by the others you asked first.

I didnt even bother reading all the posts as I am sure there are some bashing him. IN my opinion Pollard has been the best things that has happened to ISU and if we run him off it will be a travesty. I agree with the initial poster, the only team that we really cant be proud of is the mens basketball team. And at the time we all liked the hire of Coach MCd. And I still am pulling for the guy because hes caught a bunch of terrible breaks. maybe partially self inflicted..... do any of us really know.

Pollard came here trying to change the mentality of Cyclone fans..... BEcause we do have a mentality of "we will only play second fiddle to Iowa and other bigger named schools". he doesnt accept that... and if he has to ruffle some feathers to bring in more money I am game and have been. The day he leaves for a better oppurtunity those of you have bashed him will regret it.

2nd Fiddle in Football only (& that will change in a few years with Rhoads at the helm). ALL Other Sports, ISU rules the Roost.

GMac really did change the Culture of ISU MBB. From Supportive Fans to P*ssed Off Fans.

That's not my point. My point is that the CPR hire didn't take any special "insight" or "talent" on the part of Pollard, because Rhoads was the aggressor, the insitigator. If Pollard had chased CPR and convinced him to apply, that's another thing altogther.
Again, I wonder how the search was going prior to this. Hiring a DC who had just lost his job was a gamble.

Just for the sake of discussion, I still have a high discomfort level as the decision Jamie made to fire Wayne. As a fan for 35-years, I've seen a lot of coaches get canned for justifiable cause, but I've never seen Iowa State fire somebody like this situation. As Cyclones, we don't do that here.

Jamie is accountable for compounding a bad situation (LE firing) by pulling the trigger way too early on Morgan. In my opinion this was more motivated for a personal ambition to "build his empire". If there were any perceived deficiencies, any normal, decent process would have allowed the individual the chance to correct. You just don't can a coach, his assistants and their families just because you want to.

One final thing: Jamie is no Gene Smith.

+1

Gene Smith should have been flogged for allowing those hideous uniforms in the 90's.

rot in hell blue whirly bird!
