There's a difference between just throwing "ifs" out there and then logical "ifs". The things that have happened leading up to this make that question of "if the personal issue pops up again" very relevant.
When it comes to celebrities and sports, gossip is news. If you don't believe that you're very naive. Damn near every big story starts as gossip.
Not news? Just gossip? The publisher of this site as well as many other media outlets felt that it was newsworthy enough to discuss. Do we need to know every menial detail of every public figure's life? No. But don't be so naive that you can honestly sit there and say that when the rumor mill starts flying, things don't become newsworthy events.
It's easy to sit here now and second guess people for starting these rumors about Dendy, knowing what we know now. But we all know that where there's smoke, there's usually fire.
If a kid is having personal issues, fine, we don't need to know about them, but if he's missing practices and potentially missing games, I'd say that's pretty newsworthy.
...But please tell me more about how that's an invasion of privacy.
How's this
Prior to messages boards, when a person left for a couple of days for personal reasons, the only people that knew were the people that needed to know. Coaches, teammates, roommates, friends, teachers. It was not news unless the player missed a game. It still isn't news until they miss a game.
You do know that airplanes were invented long before scholarships were given out for basketball, don't you? Airplanes were invented long before the internet. Without planes, a guy living on the East coast probably doesn't end op at ISU.
You do know things that are now consdered "news" were never reported prior to the internet/camera phones/etc because people never knew. They didn't need to know. And it didn't affect the product ont he court.
How about that. not one "if" except the one in this sentence.
He said. "Need to go take care of my business" or something of the sort. Come on!! Like that is making it public.
Did the publisher of this site report the news first or did he report it to stop the RUMORS? I am guessing since the thread was up a long time before Chris addressed it, that he addressed it to squelch the rumors.
As far as smoke and fire. There was no fire near this smoke.
People should never throw wild, unsubstantiated rumors out there, especially in circumstances where an individual has asked for privacy, but you also have to realize, regardless of whether this is a personal issue or not, it is a newsworthy event. Nobody knew last week if Dendy was going to be back, or how much time he would miss, or to what extent his personal issues were affecting or possibly jeopardizing his career as a Cyclone.
Yeah, you got me. Strong logic.
I'm really glad you're not on my side of the argument. You're the one that cried about "ifs" and brought the airplane into the converstaion. I was just showing you how idiotic your logic was.
Things are different these days. And as much as you want to say you deserve to know because it might affect the product you pay for, you are wrong. This stuff has been going on for years and has not affected the product. The only difference is we didn't know what was going on behind the doors.
Just because you pay for a ticket, doesn't mean you deserve to know anything. People were buying tickets and filling Hilton long before message boards/twitter/facebook were around to spread rumors.
Insisting that we are owed an explanation, is just rude and can be damaging. I don't care how you try and justify it with the decay of the media and society.
I'm not arguing about the event at all. It WAS a newsworthy event but it is no longer. He's back with the team and has said it was a personal issue that he dealt with and wants to keep between him and his family. It's over. No news, further inquiries into it is just trying to find Gossip on why he left to begin with.
While we're splitting hairs, when did this happen? 99% of people interested in this cared only about 2 things - that he had left the team and when (if) he would return. I, and many, many people like me, don't care why he left or what he had to do while he was there. THAT is the personal business and I agree that it is not my business.
Also, people are forgetting HE is the one that put this out there on Facebook and Twitter. He knows fans read that and he knows fans will be interested in him leaving the team, even for a short while.
I'll go look, but unless he deleted it he said a lot more than that.

No it's not. It's called Gossip.
Why is it considered news if people want to know? Where is the news worthiness of someone flying home for personal reasons and then returning a day later?
He told everyone to stop the rumors until the facts surfaced, but he still acknowledged that there was an issue. Look, I agree with you about the whole "issues with the team crap", because that was just unsubstantiated and someone just throwing something out there.
You obviously have not been paying attention to the evolution of "news" and "journalism" over the last decade or so. I would say that a pretty large portion of what we are fed as "news" is actually nothing more than gossip.
Having said that, I don't care what this kid's personal issues are. I only care that he left the team and that he returned (which, frankly, I was pleasantly surprised by).
Well, yes. Because people have proven they want to hear the latest about Brangelina, it is news. (But that would never happen. Brangelina are Solid. Solid as a rock.)So when TMZ reports about the latest Brangelina break up, is that news? They make money on gossip, but that doesn't mean they don't ever break any news.
And IIRC, TMZ was the first to break the story about Brittany Murphy. That's a pretty big news story.Newsworthiness is defined as a subject having sufficient relevance to the public or a special audience to warrant press attention or coverage.

Granted, it's been 8 years since I graduated from the Greenlee School of Journalism at Iowa State, but I think all the professors would agree that news gathering and reporting is a constantly evolving field. With the advent of instantaneous communication, that has given prevalence to "news" being broken much quicker and in non-traditional fashion. That also means that "news" reaches a much larger audience than in years previous. It also means that anything anyone posts on a public forum (such as Twitter, Facebook or internet message boards) is fair game. If he didn't want that information out there at all, he should have refrained from posting it.
What are we arguing about again?

There is/was no "issue." The guy had to take care of his personal life. That isn't an issue. That is life as we know it. It didn't affect the team. It didn' affect anything except the people that got their panties in a bunch over nothing. People these days worry too much about other business
