ISU v Drake Postgame...

I've been very critical of GM, but I think he finally changed his recruiting strategy and players like Dendy and Gilstrap and Colvin are all evidence of that. Hopefully the days of recruiting MVC level talent (eg Eikmeier) are over. I think this team has enough talent to make the NCAA tournament this year.

Just looked it up, Greg has only won 1 game in each of his three previous seasons when the opponent scored 70 or more. Texas Tech in spring 09, Purdue in fall of 07 and a nobody team in fall of 06.

Yea that's what I thought....woof

Welp, past is the past...except when it comes to bashing Weasly Johnson

Garrett is looking very good running the show. He's finishing well when he penetrates.

Christopherson looks solid.

Good win, and another streak broken.

Things to work on:

1) Defense.

2) Drawing more fouls...it took ISU a long time to get into the bonus, and there weren't many FT attempts in general. They will need those easy points come conference time...

Diante had a silly number of assists tonight. Very few turnovers. He may not score a ton of points, but as long as he keeps doing that everyone is going to be happy.

Christopherson is a great guy coming off the bench. Nice shot and love his defensive tenacity.

Gilstrap had an off night. Needs to be more patient with the ball.

Brackins started slow, but was Brackins.

Lucca..What can you say. MVP of the game.

Last game, it was almost boring at the end because we were shooting so many free throws. It was a really long game because of the amount of fouls. When Gilstrap gets it going, he's going to be a guy who gets to the line pretty often, I think.

If I'm reading stats/posts right, he has 23 assists to 4 turnovers after 3 games? Wow.

The scary thing is that Gilstrap is not near his potential.....i think Gmac can teach him to slow down a little bit on offense and him and Craig will be tough to stop.....

The guy that wowed me the most tonight was Garrett. He set the tone early in the first half how we would play on the defensive side of the ball. I listened to the pre-game show and Coach Mac talked about how he wanted us to win by scoring inside - DG waited for those opportunities to develop, which they didn't early on, but he wasn't afraid to take a few inside and draw the double team off of Brackins. You can tell how much Garrett has matured and he's starting to make me think that Colvin may not see as many starts at the PG position that I thought he would before the season started.

I noticed that someone (gocubs2118) called me out for wanting Christopherson or JVB to start over Lucca. As I said in another thread, mea culpa. My argument wasn't at all ridiculous at the time, but he played a MAN'S game today.

I'm gladly eating this crow.

Someone needs to photoshop a picture with Lucca, Drake, and OWNED all incorporated in it.

Lucca has hit 18 threes against Drake in two seasons.

Thinking JVB can play the 2 is ridiculous at any point in time.

An argument can be made for JVB starting over Ham, but not Lucca.

Some things I notices perusing the box score:

Christopherson played 29 minutes, had 15 points, 4 boards and 5 assists. and only 1 TO. Great game. I didn't realize he had 5 assists.

JVB played 23 minutes and didn't take a 3. He had 6 pts, 6 boards and 3 blocks.

I love how quiet the big players on this team play sometimes. Brackings (22 & 10), Gilstrap (7 & 9) and Garrett (11 assists, 3 TOs) all seemed to have quiet games, but put up good numbers and played solid games. s

Great point on the quiet points.

Just got home from the game sat 3 rows up from Court,(different perspective than my corner seats at hilton) I loved the fact that Mac was all over the guys to pressure. Christopherson is a welcome addition, Lucca looks a step quicker than last year. This is going to be a fun team to watch.

Just got back from the game and i'm pretty sure there were more cyclone fans at that game then drake. btw the Knapp Center is kind of pathetic, but then again its a MVC team.
