Austin Flynn Interview - Tornado Hit's Hometown

I listen to the 365 Sports guys VLOG's quite a bit and they had a piece on Tornado's earlier this week that hit Houston area. They interviewed the Deer Park HS football coach who just happens to be former Cyclone star football player Austin Flynn.

Not the best circumstances to hear from a former Cyclone, but it sounds like his family and community got through the EF3 tornado's without any serious injuries. The last I heard of Austin he was at Grandview in DSM. But doing some research he has returned to his hometown and been head coach at Deer Park HS since 2018. Some internet searches showed his team was 9-2 this past season, so looks like he is having success. Also noticed that another former Cyclone, Ben Barkema, is also on his staff as OC.

Austin Flynn Interview

Friday OT - R.O.C.K. In the U.S.A.

I saw the attached infographic this week, and found the dichotomy of Europe/Asia vs US interesting. And I love the mental image of everyone in Zimbabwe listening to Thin Lizzy non-stop.

My most-listened to would likely be Bowie, maybe the Stones. Beatles are certainly up there. I have a mental block with Nirvana being considered classic rock.

What would your top classic rock band be?

Big 12 tournament tickets

Guys -
Probably a dumb question, but hoping to get a trip planned down to KC for the Big 12 tournament, and seeing that if you want to buy tickets, they have to be all-session.
For those that have been there before, there have to be ways to scalp on a day-to-day basis, right? We probably won't be playing on Wednesday, so have no interest in going and watching those games, for example.

Like I said, maybe this is a dumb question, but any insight would be appreciated

Wide Receiver Coach hired.

Finding Food Item from Childhood help

This is probably a long shot but Someone on here may know, may have had them or may at least know what I am talking about.

There is an item I food item I used to get as a child from a local mom and pop drive-inn that I have never been able to remember what it was called, or ever find or even hear of anywhere. It has been one of those things that has always bugged me and have randomly searched for it for years. Just to find out more about what it was and if there is anything like them today.

This was a small town mom and pop type drive-inn. They were independent and not franchised with anyone. They would have gotten their food from an area food distribution place that distributed to bars, restaurants and other vendors not affiliated with franchises. So these could have been available at a number of places around Iowa, and the US for that matter.

Here is what I remember them as:
They were a side dish type item.
I remember them as multi colored chips of some sort. I remember them as similar texture to a bubbly corn chip. My sister remembers them as similar texture to Pork rinds. But were Red, Green, Blue, Yellow etc.
I believe they were deep fried, they came hot, (sizzling if I remember correctly), and for some reason I feel like they even crackled in some way in your mouth, almost like pop rocks, but not exactly in that way, just kind of a similar feel.
My sister remembers them as being multi flavored like bacon, etc. I don't remember that for sure.
They were my favorite thing to order, but I was pretty young, then they became unavailable. Whether the place stopped getting them or the place they ordered their food from no longer sold them. I don't know. That Drive Inn changed owners a couple times over the years and finally was closed and torn down.

Just wondering if anyone else remembers these things, or has any idea what they might be? I know its a total random question on here, but I am guessing they may have been something distributed to other Iowa restaurants as well in the 70s and 80s, so this might be somewhere someone else might remember them.

Whatever happened to...

Out of the blue, Todd Stevens popped in my head for some reason recently when I was thinking about central Iowa sports writers. Didn't he run Cyclone Illustrated wayyyy back in the day? He was also the Sports Editor for the Ames Tribune as well. If I remember correctly there was some headlines about him and another editor there and a libel suit but I may have people mixed up. Whatever happened to that guy?

What constitutes Hall-of-Fame worthy?

In pro sports, you hear all the time about "future Hall-Of-Famer" X. But what constitutes Hall-Of-Fame worthy in your mind?

Championships?
Personal Stats?
MVP Awards?
Longevity?

The specific scenarios I'm thinking of are guys like the below list - using recent QBs for this exercise. Each had really good attributes, or set records, or won champs, or this or that, but does just being really good constitute HOF? I could make an argument for several, but some just seem ludicrous to me even though they're often talked about in that context. I purposely left out guys that probably 95% of posters would agree are HOF (Brock Purdy, Peyton, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, etc).

Are these HOF? Why?
  • Matthew Stafford
  • Donovon McNabb (Go Eagles!)
  • Matt Hasselbeck
  • Michael Vick (Go Eagles!)
  • Carson Palmer
  • Daunte Culpepper
  • Eli Manning
  • Tony Romo
  • Philip Rivers
  • Ben Roethlisberger
  • Steve McNair
  • Rich Gannon
  • Drew Bledsoe
  • Matt Ryan
  • Jeff Garcia
