Looking Back at What Worked in 99-00

I was at my folks place and stumbled across a highlight tape of the 99-00 men and women's teams. I was at all of those games, but thought I'd watch to see what made those teams the best ISU have offered.

1. Angie Welle was everything we remember her to be. She often led the team running the court and her left handed shots were something unusual at that time. She moved like no center I've seen in a long time. Time and time again she was down court for a long feed and a layup.

2. This team had depth. Wow...starters were Frese, Welle, Taylor, Francis, and Gahan. Then add in Wilson, Cipinyte, Haugan, Junod, Cizek, Mo and others. The staff had lots of options to go to without drop-off.

3. There were several really good teams this team had to beat at that time. Iowa. Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas (who beat the Clones twice!) etc.

4. The current staff could do well by watching tape from this period. The offense was always attacking. It wasn't a stand and pass around the perimeter. The guards were always slashing and looking for either the shot or a teammate to pass to. I didn't see anyone standing and waiting. This was impressive.

5. To follow up #4...constant motion. Everyone is moving on offense. Rotation. Drives. Crashing boards.

6. Shooting - combination of being able to hit layups, short to mid range and the three. No weaknesses here.

How does that compare to the game and team now? First, we rarely have this type of quality depth available anymore. Part of that is players choosing to go where they can play, part the emergence of other good teams (choices), and part recruiting. Next year would have been a bit unprecedented if Donarski and Fritz had chosen to stay. Second, the game has evolved. There are better athletes across the board now. Could the 99-00 team still thrive today? No doubt. They were superb. The biggest take for me is re-evaluating how the offense flows. Other teams are playing better defense today, but there are still some good takeaways. Something many have clamored for is more movement on offense. Is that a by-product of limited depth? Perhaps. But watching the 99-00 team attack was a thing of beauty. I'd love to see our team become more aggressive, but it will depend on giving players needed breaks. I was trying to research the minutes per game stats, but the historical data isn't coming up right now.

Final thought...if you have access to this video. Watch it. Both teams were amazing and represent the pinnacle of Iowa State basketball.

Road Game Tickets for BYU

I live in SLC and have a lot of friends and family who are interested in coming out to Utah for the BYU game this fall. Has anyone had experience getting tickets for away games through ISU for larger groups? If so, who do we need to get in contact with? Or would it make sense just to buy them directly through BYU when single game tickets are on sale? TIA.

OT Wrestling: Your favorite matches

@JM4CY got me thinking. What our your favorite individual matches?

My #1 is Osenbaugh pins Lou Banach

Your Stephen King novel rankings

Thanks to @JP4CY for this idea in another thread today. King is all over the map with types of books. Horror. Sci-fi. Religious tones. Drama. Supernatural. Would love to see how people rank their favorites and ones they really don't like. Obviously doesn't have to have read all of his novels...can list a few, just your personal favorite, etc.

Off to make my list.

Look-Ahead/Promo: CF Sitcom Bracket Selection Show

After I found a sitcom bracket on twitter the idea was brought forth to do a CF Sitcom bracket where unlike the Twitter bracket a long range of shows from 50's through today was considered and included. The small but mighty selection committee has been working on a bracket and we are now in the finishing touches.

This thread is to give people a heads up that the "selection show" thread will be coming out Sunday night.

Friday OT #1 - Not Gonna Do It

@madguy30 gave me three great topics that all work together for this week. I keep wavering between using them separately or together - I will just do separate.

What is something on which you refuse to spend a lot of money, but could (and some people do)?

For example - I have a friend who spent $600 on tickets for a concert for one artist, not a festival or anything. I love concerts - but I can’t see myself spending $600 for a show unless I got to sit right in the lead singer’s lap for its entirety. And even then, it had better be a pretty great lap.

What are yours?

Non-Electric Lawnmowers

Since we have a thread on electric lawnmowers may as well have one on regular ones. I've been looking to upgrade my 21" push mower that I've had since 2004 when I bought my 1st house. It's a 4.5 HP Craftsman with a bagger and no self propel I think I paid $125 new at Sears so I've definitely got a lot of value out of it over the years. My issue now is I'm ready for an upgrade as I have a .28 acre lot that takes me around 90 minutes to mow with that mower and would like to save a little time and effort as when the grass is thick like it is right now that mower is a little underpowered.

Been looking at the Toro Timemaster which is a 30" push mower but between the price and some of the issues people have with it when I have researched it over the past 2 years or so I am hesitant to get serious about buying one. I don't want to go with a rider or zero turn mower as I think that is overkill for the size of my lawn and I'm still in my mid 40's and could use the extra physical rigor of mowing with a push mower. Any other affordable options out there for a larger walk behind mower that won't break the bank but still get the job done? Maybe I am overthinking the negatives with the Toro Timemaster as I hose down my mower after each mow and do regular maintenance on it so maybe some of the horror stories about the belts and pullies not being of good quality and it plugging up due to poor design are over exaggerated? Not coming up with good alternatives when I search either as most are commercial grade mowers out of my budget that I may as well buy a rider at those prices.

What's your favorite hot sauce?

I love a good hot sauce, and I use it for lots and lots of applications. But it has to be more than just heat. It's got to bring some flavor to the table.
I'm a big fan of Cholula's products, specifically their chipotle and chili garlic varieties.
And the original Huy Fong Sriracha is a staple for certain dishes.
I also really like Trader Joe's Green Dragon sauce, which is basically just pureed jalapeno and garlic.
And throw in some Mike's Hot honey, for good measure.

I know that there are plenty of other options that have their fans, but those are the ones I keep.

What kind of hot sauces are in your fridge/pantry?

Luton Town F.C.

With all the attention garnered by Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham being promoted from non-League football to League Two, I wonder if anybody is paying attention to or interested in the Luton Town story.

Before the formation of the present Premier League, Luton Town FC was in the English First Division for a decade (1981-1992), then going into a free-fall which found them in the non-League Fifth Division from 2009-2014. They won the National League in 2014, then were promoted from League Two in 2018 and League One in 2019. The finished third in the English Championship (2nd Division) this year and are in a playoff with Coventry to see who will be promoted to the Premier League.

In short, Luton Town F.C. is on the verge of doing what Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are eventually hoping to do with Wrexham. I think it's a pretty cool story and wanted to know what other soccer fans think about it.

We are planning a trip to Italy this summer. A friend suggested Costco as a good choice.

Several years ago I put together a trip to Ireland and UK but it was a lot of work for our family vacation due to all the transportation details (ferry, bus, train, etc.). A travel service like Costco may be a good alternative for this upcoming trip since they handle all the transportation and hotels.

What have you all used for your European trip planning?

Silverfish/spider problem

I am not a fan of bugs at all. But silverfish and spiders are the two I have major issues with and those are very common in our area of south Minneapolis. We've had a pest control guy come every few months and last year that worked actually really well. But so far this year we are seeing more silverfish and spiders in our basement...which isn't that shocking since it's more dark and damp but that is where our bedroom is, our bathroom is, our laundry and closets are, and one of our living rooms.

Need some ideas from you all on here on deterring these things. I know silverfish and spiders are helpful in many ways...but not in the house. Are there home remedies that have worked for you? Certain pet-friendly products/sprays we can try?
