Where were you when it happened?

I remember this game (ISU at Iowa 1998) like yesterday. I was at a batchalor party in Minneapolis. Our group was mix of Cyclone and Hawkeye fans. There was a golf outing scheduled for the time of the game. I skipped that and went to Champs bar next to our downtown hotel. The other guys made fun of me for wanting to watch the game, they all knew it would be a waste of time as ISU wasn't going to get their @sses handed to them. So I was at the bar by myself, there was a Wisconsin game watch in there too. As the game unfolded I couldn't believe what I was watching. I went back the room after the game and the phone rang. The guys were on the way back from the golf outing and wanted to know the score, I said 27-9. My Cyclone buddy who was on the phone said we didn't do to bad, I said no, we won 27-9. They were all calling me a liar. Finally they all came filing into the hotel room to check the tv and wait for the scores at the bottom of the screen. When it flashed up there the cyclone fans in the group were both celebrating and kicking themselves that had missed the game. The Iowa fans...stunned.

Really good read.

*** 2023-2024 College Football Survivor Week 1 ***

I know I'm 2 weeks early but pumped to get this contest up and going and since you have to be in at the start no one can say I didn't have time to get in on this. This year Week 1 will include games from Aug. 26 through Sept. 4. There are 5 FBS teams who play 2 games against FBS competition during this time. If you take one of these 5 teams they will need to win both games.

Tiebreaker points return this year. A reminder regarding tiebreaker points: If your team wins and covers you gain an extra bonus point. If you take a undefeated team who is the underdog you gain the point for them covering plus another bonus point. As the season goes on the number of teams undefeated being a underdog greatly diminish so take advantage while you can.

I will be using ESPN's Lines. Line will be the line at kickoff for tiebreaker points

I also thought this year about a reward for top finisher other than bragging rights. Since this is a contest on Cyclone Fanatic I like the idea of the reward going back to helping ISU athletics. For the top 3 CYCLONE Fan finishers (Hawks fans are as always are welcome to play but this is a contest on a Cyclone fan board) I will donate $50, $25 and $10 to @brentblum and We Will on your behalf. You will just have to pm me with where you want the money to go i.e. general fund or to a specific sport.

Rules/How to Play if you are new:
  1. Pick a team you think will win that weeks game. Pick only 1 team per week.
  2. Don't pm me the pick, post on here your pick.
  3. You can only pick that team ONCE the entire time you are in the game.
  4. The goal is to advance and be the last person standing.
  5. Only games that have a FBS school facing another FBS school are eligible to be picked.
  6. You have up until the start time of the game you picked to switch.
  7. If your team loses, you are out for the competition.
  8. If you skip a week of picks, you are out.
  9. You can switch as many times up until the game you have picked officially starts.
  10. If you have questions, pm me
  11. Post 2 of the thread will have the possible games you can pick.
  12. Post 3 will have each player and their previous week's picks.
  13. You can only pick teams that are undefeated (they will be bolded).
  14. You can't join in during the middle of the season.
Please include prior weeks picks with your pick for the week.
Have any questions, pm me or ask in the thread. Thanks!

This week's football content

Hey guys!

I wanted to just drop here some of the content we've put out this week from football. Just in case you missed anything:

From Rob Gray -

ISU special teams standout Ben Nikkel had “no clue” he’d receive a scholarship

ISU special teams coordinator Jordan Langs wants to provide “the edge” for the Cyclones

CFTV -

You get over 25 minutes of Coach Campbell! Plus interviews with players and special teams coordinator, Jordan Langs.

WATCH: Campbell, Langs, Nikkel and Perkins talk special teams

Enjoy!

NIL and Gambling

Wanted to jump in on this gambling topic as NIL has been discussed. I’m as disappointed to hear some of these guys gambled on Iowa State games at whatever amount as anyone. And who knows if the little amount of NIL money we’ve shared is a part of that. And for that I feel horrible for all.

But NIL has done so many positive things for Cyclones that doesn’t make the news. Just this week, a football player’s family was struggling to pay the bills back home and were close to getting their power turned off. We were able to find this player an opportunity in the community and he sent the money back home to help his folks. That won’t make headlines, but the impact is real.

Student season tickets

My son is an incoming freshman. He did not get selected in the lottery for season tickets for football and basketball. He's pretty bummed about it.

It's been a long time since I was at ISU and would love insight from some of you current or more recent students about how he could go about getting tickets.

Is there a student group web site or app that allows students to share or transfer tickets to other students?

Friday OT - Bucket List

About a year ago, I got a chance to fulfill a longtime dream to drive a Zamboni as part of a class through Ames Parks and Rec. I was just terrible, burnt out terribly, but it was everything I had dreamed and more. My daughter was there to take video and was mortified that I had zero chill.

What is on your bucket list? What items have you fulfilled? Did they live up to it?
