Insider Information Weekly Mailbag 10-30-2019
Halloween Edition
Sponsored by Pepto Bismol, for when the big runs are keeping you down.

@Sigmapolis starts the week with the easy question: FMK the three Emmas: Stone, Roberts, and Watson.
GTO:
This one is pretty easy and @cmjh10 got it right. M - Watson is the easy choice. For the other two, neither is much my type, but I guess I find Stone less annoying so F - Stone and K - Roberts.
Pants: F-Stone (she proved in Zombieland 2 that she’s still a hottie), M-Watson (Watson is on my top 5 list), K-Roberts. I know who Roberts is, but she’s kind of just a passing person for me. This was too easy.

@jcyclonee just coming back from his hangover asks: What happened to this last weekend? It went by too fast.
Pants:
I know people love 2:30 games, but I kind of hate them. I can’t tailgate. So I sit around all day waiting for the game to start at 3:30, then when it’s over the day is kind of over. Really ***** with my Saturdays. Then Sunday, I got lost in some not very good horror movies.
GTO: Yes, this weekend was the equivalent of that Chuba Hubbard TD run. Gone in a blur. I was sick, but still had to attend a church Trunk or Treat (during the game, so I just watched on my phone in bits and pieces). I also recorded the game on my DVR and then decided to delete it as soon as I got home. On Sunday I skipped church and just stayed at home resting all day.

@ImJustKCClone asks: Will we win our bye game this week?
GTO:
Bye team has some athletes, but they’re also coached by CPR, Mangino, and Burnham so they’ll find a way to suck on offense and give 15 yard cushions on defense. As long as we don’t beat ourselves… Well, then again. Could go either way.
Pants: Probably a tie. Just hoping for no injuries.

@CloneLawman trying to gather information for his case: Who burgled KC's little car this weekend? (unauthorized entry with criminal mischief...no theft reported). Why?

[Additional detail provided by KC: Screwed up and left a window partway down. Nothing stolen but our parking pass. Basically they emptied a full box of kleenex across the floorboards, seats, & dash, took folded plastic ponchos out of their net bags and spread them across the seats...juvenile crap. After a win, I probably would have laughed. After a loss (that should NOT have been a loss), it wasn't as funny.
I'm over it now...but still disappointed in adults that don't understand "if it's not yours, LEAVE IT ALONE".]
Pants
: Is KC aware that technology now exists to prevent this sort of thing from happening? Like car alarms? Or door locks? Or car doors and windows?
GTO: The modus operandi would point to BDK and his fast food establishment trashing friend. His motive could be related to revenge on KC for constantly calling him out on his stupidity. A second potential suspect could be a disgruntled former Taco Time employee. The motive on that one could be related to either firing, unpaid wages, or just triggered from seeing the vehicle again.

WBB: Preview of Missouri Western State

What can we expect Wednesday?

They are coached by Candi Whitaker, Texas Tech coach from 2013-2018. It's possible that's the reason we are playing MWS, although she was hired in April 2019 so this game might have been scheduled before then.

The school is Div II. They are in the MIAA, which includes schools like Nebraska-Kearney, NW Mo State, and Emporia State. Out of 14 teams, they were picked 8th by the media and 11th by the coaches. They were 14-16 last season.

Their tallest players are 6'1". Not surprising for a lower-level school.

They appear to only return 6 players, but they have 8 newcomers, only one of whom is a freshman. The other 7 are all transfer juniors and seniors.

The obvious focus of the ISU defense will be on Katrina Roenfeldt. Of their six returners, she is the only one in their top 7 scoring last season, but she was easily #1 at 16.2 ppg. She was a 38% 3pt shooter making 2.9 of 7.6 attempts per game. She was also their leading rebounder (despite being 5'6"!) and #2 in assists. She was first-team all-conference last season and made the preseason team this year.

As a team, they got around 9 steals per game (Roenfeldt led the team with 2 per game). They seemed to force a lot of turnovers but also foul a fair amount.

With a new coach and a bunch of new players, there's not a lot more to say. I expect them to be pesky defensively (could be a good test for our point guards), but I don't expect them to be one of those low-level teams that is able to stick around against ISU due to cohesiveness, as can sometimes happen with an experienced, well-coached team. With all the newcomers, MWS just hasn't had enough time to get to that point.

Game Atmosphere

This is my 19th year as a season ticket holder and taking in a game at JTS has been a great experience...it gets better every year! I would love to see ISU handout towels to everyone going into the game or at least the majority of everyone going into the game. Looking over and seeing the towels waving in the students section was awesome! I can only imagine what it would look like if most everyone in the stadium had a towel waving. Penn St. did this a couple weeks ago and it certainly added to the atmosphere.

Your creepy story (not an official Friday OT)

I didn’t ask for or get approval from @Angie so it’s NOT a Friday OT thread.

I’ve been really jonesing for some creepy stories and haven’t been satisfied. Listened to a few different podcasts, watched some videos. Tried Reddit, but most of No Sleep is fiction and Let’s Not Meet is all creeper people, so it doesn’t offer a lot of variety. So I’m coming to CF. What’s something creepy you’ve experienced? Whether it’s supernatural, weird people, animal encounters, weather, whatever. Just something that you look back on and get chills.

My go-to is always “knock-knock.”

When my niece was about two or three she used to always talk about Knock-knock in her room. She’d always here knocking on her walls. Never the outside wall (they lived on the second floor anyway, and mostly on the wall by her bed and the one with her closet. It was always kind of creepy, but could probably be easily attributed to pipes in the wall.

One morning my mom and I got a call to come right over because they needed help. We get there and there’s just a trail of maggots, like, thousands of them, going from her closet door to the back door that goes to their patio. And that’s it. Literally like someone took buckets of them and poured a path directly from her closet to the door. None outside. And all she did as we cleaned and tried to get them all out of the carpet (holy **** that was awful) she just kept pointing at them and saying “knock-knock.”

Still have no idea what would have caused that, but two year old kids can be creepy as **** as it is and she wasn’t helping.

Iowa State Daily media day article

http://www.iowastatedaily.com/sport...cle_fb0900e4-fa8a-11e9-86ed-1722d88dff3f.html

There is some additional information that was not in Dresser's interview.

A recurring irritation:
There is nothing on cyclones.com yet. Do they wait to put out material so that they do not step on the Daily's toes? Do they post it on Twitter? It seems that was the only place that the wrestle-offs were promoted. It would be nice if it was at least one of the "go to" sites for Cyclone wrestling information. The site seems to be very timely and reliable for football, men's and women's basketball, and other sports.

2019-2020 Expectations

Well, with the football disappointment from Saturday, and the Vikings continuing to find ways to let me down, I am ready for wrestling season to begin. Below are my weight by weight expectations for the upcoming season!

125- I like how hard Mackall wrestles, and think he improved as the year went on last year. His ceiling is probably 7-8th place at NCAA, but with some of the studs coming off redshirt at 125, I am expecting similar results to last year where he is a R12 or just missing the R12 season. He is the type of guy that can get some points on the back side as he is pretty good at getting majors or going for pins against lesser competition. Prediction for NCAA's: R12. Side note: real excited to see what Aden Reeves can do this year as a redshirt. I think he is the real deal and will push Mackall for the spot next season.

133- First off, Gomez needs to work on weight management in order to achieve his true potential this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Todd Small is the guy to start the season at 133. However, if Gomez can manage his weight and work on being solid in all positions, I think he can get to the 3/4th place match. If he struggles with weight management, probably looking at another R12 type season from Austin. I'll go somewhere in the middle. Prediction for NCAA's: 6th place. Also, it is nice to have depth here as I believe Todd would be a top 20 wrestler if forced into action.

141- Ian seems to sneak in one or two big upsets in the month of January that always gives us hope for NCAAs, but then falters as the season goes on. I think a lot of this is due to guys struggling with his pace when they first wrestle him, and then he also has been dinged up at the end of the year the last couple seasons. I think he can be a R12 type wrestler, but not sure he will reach R12 this year. Prediction: 2-2 at NCAAs. Hot take for the season- If Echemendia qualifies and enrolls sometime this semester, I think he could be the guy at 141 come big 12s.

149- I really like Jarrett, and he always peaks at the end of the season. However, I think he is a little overrated in Flo's preseason rankings at 3. That being said, if he doesn't wrestle some of the guys like Sasso, Lee, or O'Connor until NCAAs, he could very well beat them as it takes a match or two to adjust to Jarrett's style. I am guessing he takes another step up from last year though and reaches the 5th/6th place match. Prediction: 5th place.

157- It's been a while since there has been this much hype for an Iowa State redshirt, and I think Carr is legit. He has some tough matches right off the bat, and while he might lose some of them, by the time NCAAs roll around I think David will be one of the top title contenders. May have some cardinal glasses on for this prediction, but we haven't had a champ since Kyven and we are due. Prediction: NCAA Champ

165- I am assuming Chase will win this spot in the lineup. Chase came on at the end of the year last year and really bought into the coaching staff. I am curious to see if he will be big enough to compete at 165 as I still believe 157 is his better weight, but he will have a motor and be able to wear some guys out at 165. I am expecting similar results to what he had last year. Prediction: 1-2 at NCAAs.

174- I think the length of the season took its toll on Marcus. He looked really good at the beginning of the year, but just looked tired in every match at the end of the year. He still had what I would consider a successful freshman season, and think he has a chance to take another step this year. He has the talent to be an AA at 174 if he can handle the full season. I am hoping he hit the weights hard this off season. I am expecting him to take a step forward. Prediction: R12.

184- Man, what could've been last year. I don't think anyone has improved as much as Sammy has the last couple years. Like Austin, weight control will be big for him, but I think he is taking the right steps and has a chance to continue to grow and start to dominate opponents. Zahid moving up to 184 hurts his title chances, but Colbray has the talent to still challenge this year. I don't think he gets to the title match, but do think he will AA. Prediction: 6th place.

197- I think either Shapiro or Duggan will be solid at this weight. I am curious to see how they handle a full season, and how either Shapiro handles wrestling up a weight or how Duggan handles the cut down to 197. Either way, I am expecting they qualify for nationals and maybe sneak a win, but qualifying will be a good season. Prediction: NCAA Qualifier, but 0-2.

Hwt- Gannon has beat a few of the guys ranked ahead of him preseason, and I am hoping another off season in the weight room will have him stronger than ever. I am expecting Gremmel to take another step this year and get close to AA honors, but fall just short. Prediction: R12

4 AAs and 10 qualifiers would have me ecstatic at the end of the year, so I am probably being rather optimistic with my picks, but I really believe this staff will have the team ready to take another step and get into the top 10 in Minneapolis. Excited for the season to start and watch this team continue to grow!
