I have been a Washington fan since 1992, but I have decided to drop them and find a new team to follow. The owner, Dan Snyder, is a giant POS and the Commanders is a stupid nickname. I have narrowed down my list and need CF help to make a decision.

On That Note: The Trees

Welcome back to “On That Note,” CycloneFanatic’s weekly music night, co-hosted by @MeanDean, @CycloneRulzzz and cyclones500.

For this segment, in anticipation of Arbor Day, our focus is songs with titles/lyrics containing the word tree, or a specific variety of tree.

We also accept forms of “grow” and “plant” (the verb form), and other appropriately related tree-related terms (leaf/leaves, branch, root, limb, et al).

NOT accepting band names (unless, of course, said groups have songs containing the stuff noted above).
Here's one to get us going.

Cyclones add post transfer Isnelle Natabou

Big get for this team. No. 4 in the NCAA in field goal percentage last year. Two years left.

College Search & Announcements

Last Fall, I started a thread about college search and campus visits. I do appreciate comments from my fellow CFers espcially one mentioning tat the goal is to go to good schools as my son might change his major - the poster was correct: he decided to change his career goal, instead of going to med school, he wants to major either in Biomedical Engineering or Applied Maths & Statistics.

One year later, here we are: still writing essays, waiting and getting announcements. So far he got accepted by U of Minnesota Twin Cities. Still waiting for couple of more announcements in January, including Wisconsin-Madison on the 31st). He got deferred by couple of colleges (we know those 2 would be a reach) but got accepted last week by Notre Dame. Now he's leaning towards ND now, although that means paying much more than U of M. But at the end of the day we'll see how things go and sit down to see what makes sense.

Would love to hear experiences with fellow CFers (either parents or students themselves). I always think it's fun the exchange stories like this.

New Cyclone Gymnastics Coach Hired - Ashley Miles Greig

Ames, Iowa – Four-time NCAA champion Ashley Miles Greig has been named the eighth head coach in the history of the Iowa State women's gymnastics program following a nationwide search, ISU Senior Associate Athletics Director Dr. Calli Sanders announced today.

Interesting hire. Great college athlete and team caption on Alabama championship teams but has not coaching experience, not even as a college assistant (if I read the summary correctly). I am guessing she must have had a home run hitting interview.

SI: SEC mulling new punishments for field storming

Per Pat Forde, the SEC is discussing increased punishments on schools for field storming. Since fines don't seem to offer enough of a deterrent, a working group of SEC ADs is proposing that schools that allow field storming at their home stadium will have to sacrifice future home games. In theory it would mean games like Tennessee's win over Alabama in 2022 could have resulted in a 2023 or 2024 home game being moved to the opponents field.

Takeaways from the spring game

Detailed a few takeaways from today's game, here. Let me know what you think:

Interest in a Golf Outing? - Athens, OH (Friday before the game)

Wanted to gauge any interest in folks who might want to golf Friday afternoon 9/15/23, the day before we play @ Ohio. If enough people are interested I would look into scheduling an outing with the University. Otherwise would also look to book a few tee times to get us squared away. Info on the golf course is below. Respond to this if you'd be interested!

"Iconic" water tower tower to be torn down

The water tower outside Kinnick Stadium was a signature feature long before the Hawkeyes put their stamp on it with a Tigerhawk. Like the ivy at Wrigley Field or the waterfalls at then-Royals Stadium, the appearance of the water tower was always an early benchmark of “if it’s in the game, it’s in the game.“

So here’s the bad news: The iconic water tower, with its Ferentz-approved Tigerhawk logo finally added in 2018, will be torn down to make room for a new hospital inpatient tower.

Alabama Basketball - Murder Investigation

Brandon Miller has allegedly been tied to a shooting on the Tuscaloosa strip last month involving another player from the team, per an investigator’s findings released today.

He is a major contributor to the men’s basketball team this year in Tuscaloosa at 18+ ppg, with over 30 minutes per game and is likely one of the best players in the SEC right now.

Hard to believe a “wrong place, wrong time” statement really covers the full situation. Feels like the coach’s response isn’t enough here, especially considering he’s continuing to let him play.
