Des Moines-New Taprooms

So excited to see all these new places opening over the next year.

Big Grove is opening Wednesday.
Backpocket should be opening this fall in Johnston. I really hope they continue to improve. They are one of the few breweries that have actually improved over time.
Singlespeed should be open next Spring (I think)
Toppling-TBD

While vacationing, I almost always try to check out the local tap rooms and Des Moines is killing it for it's size. Better than similar sized places like Omaha, Wichita, Madison, etc. Even beats some bigger cities like Nashville, OKC, etc. Hell IMO Austin was behind Des Moines.

Kid’s Iowa State football hemet

I realize it’s probably a long shot but at this point I’m trying to exhaust all possibilities. My wife and I have been trying to find an Iowa State helmet for our youngest whose birthday party is this coming Saturday but are having no luck. The closest I’ve come is a website that had a kid’s helmet and uniform but is out of stock. Everything else that we can find is pushing $150 and meant to sit on a shelf for display; we’re looking for something that a kid can play around in. I thought for sure someone would be selling a plastic kids version but none of the Iowa State affiliated stores even have anything like that. If anyone knows of any other places to check it would be greatly appreciated.

I have been a Washington fan since 1992, but I have decided to drop them and find a new team to follow. The owner, Dan Snyder, is a giant POS and the Commanders is a stupid nickname. I have narrowed down my list and need CF help to make a decision.

NIL & Realignment: Change Your Interest?

How will NIL and conference realignment impact your interest in college sports?

  • I will gain interest and follow more.

  • Probably won't change much at all.

    Votes: 103 46.4%
  • I will lose interest and follow less.

    Votes: 116 52.3%

With NIL and conference realignment you hear people claim they'll lose interest in college sports and viewership will decrease resulting in a bunch of regrets. History indicates that those in control have always been corrupt, realigning, greedy, inconsistent, political, or however you want to generalize them. Despite that, we have all still rooted for, watched, and supported our team likely because we are vested and take pride in our school. IMO, I don't see that changing and no matter what comes of college athletics I'd have the same interest in my team/school and whatever league they're affiliated with. What the athletes are doing on the "field" doesn't change. Curious if the majority feel similar or if doom and gloom is truly around the corner.

Friday OT #1 - Nine Days A Week

Thanks so much to @cyclones500 for another awesome thread idea! Here is how he puts it - I can’t improve on his description:

Suppose you have a 9-day time off from work … officially begins at 5 pm Friday, ends at 8 am the Monday after 2nd weekend.

Thought-experiment portion: Roughly 5 days of the stretch contains fairly structured activity/events/socializing, involving at least a modest amount of travel. The remaining days are lower-key and unstructured. You may organize it any way you wish.

Assumptions (1) the “high activity” isn’t locked into a weekend event (as might be common) (2) You don’t have to “eat a day” on the front-end for preparation.

What days do you do the “busy stuff” and the when do you do the remainder? First-things first? “Adventure” at the end? Mid-week intensity (build-up then wind-down)?

For those who are retired: Think back to the glory days when you had to work for a living :)

New ISU Athletic Budget

The new athletic budgets came out... passed 100M for the first time. It will be interesting to see where we land - generally the budget proposed is a bit lower than final revenue.

Biggest nugget is the Foundation support revenue they are projecting... +$7.25M vs. 2021.

The 30M is a 61% (!) increase in donations from 2020 (see table below). We are making progress for sure. Last thing to note, our budget gap as proposed in 2019 to iowa was $37M (88M vs. 125M). This year, it is down to $22M. $128M vs. $106M.

In 2019, we had about $17.5M in foundation support we are now at $30M (+$12.5M). Great progress!

PODCAST - Dan Carlin talks college football

Any DC fans here? I love all of the stuff Dan does (but, I sure wish he could do more...)

Anyway, I think Dan articulated well what I've been feeling about college football for the last few years

Anyone else listen? Have some thoughts?

I'm warming to the possibility of a super-league & schools like Iowa State playing in a lower league, but perhaps arranged more traditionally & geographically

(edit: forgot the link to the podcast... oops...)

Best Fake/Madeup "Big 12 expansion (College Football)" Takes

Looking at Twitter there seem to be a lot of HOT TAKES flying around so I thought we would have some fun with it ... mhm.

BREAKING: ACCORDING TO SOURCES FAMILIAR TO THE SITUATION VECNA, STAR OF STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4 HAS FORMALLY APPLIED TO BECOME A MEMEBER OF THE BIG 12. THIS WILL ALL BUT DISSOLVE THE UPSIDE DOWN.

The situation is still ongoing but it looks like this could push RAMBO over the line Into joining from being Independant.
