(Promo Only): This week at “On That Note”

This is for promotional/advance notice only, DO NOT post selections in this thread. Regular launch is Tuesday night, with my co-hosts @MeanDean and @CycloneRulzzz.

We're posting the gist of this week's topic a couple of days ahead, to allow some research time.

For the upcoming segment, we want favorite songs you encountered in 2022. You may include any/all of the following:

1. New music released in 2022 (also allowing final month or so of ’21)
2. Music released prior to ’22, but something you didn’t discover until this year.
3. Older stuff that had been off-radar for quite a while, but you had in heavier rotation during past 12 months.

Although we don't want any song clips until Tuesday, if you have general questions regarding the topic, you may post in this thread.

Check your song lists and we'll see you Tuesday night!

2022 Cyclone Pride

Ok. Win/loss record was a tremendous disappointment, but seasons come and go. The most important long term stat for this team is the team gpa and the character development of these young men. These men will keep the lessons learned in the classroom and lessons learned from the coaching staff for the rest of their lives. They will use the Cyclone knowledge to change their world and be a positive influence on the people around them. They will be Cyclones for life. On senior day, you could see the the relationships that they have with the coaching staff. Congratulations to this team for their achievements on and off the field. We are proud to have you in the Cyclone family.

Iowa Dual Discussion

Rather than overtaking every other thread to talk about this match let’s get it started. This is the week! It’s going to be fun and a great test for the young guys.

125 - Lee fall Terukina. I have no inside knowledge, but reading the tea leaves that Lee will go for this dual. 6-0 Iowa

133 - Teske dec Attasauov. I didn’t think Attasauov looked great in Humboldt and Redding obviously was terrible against Cal Baptist. If we can get the Redding that showed up in Florida, this is a winnable match, but I need to see it again. Definitely could go either way. 9-0 Iowa

141 - Swiderski maj Bennet. While I think Lee goes, I have no idea about Woods. I don’t think it would be smart for Woods to wrestle his first match of the year against Swiderski. Swiderski is getting better and better adjusted to the weight and his pressure is going to be high. I’d like to see Swiderski develop a consistent turn and maybe this could end up in a pin, but that will come. Even if Woods goes I’m taking Swiderski, why not. 9-4 Iowa

149 - Murin dec Johnson. This is going to be close. I think it’s a 1 td match and RT and gas tank will be the deciding factor. 12-4 Iowa

157 - Siebrecht dec Kraisser. Siebrecht is no world beater, but I’ve been impressed so far this year. I think there could be some wild exchanges in this one. I think the range of outcomes spans the whole spectrum here but Iowa is the favorite. 15-4 Iowa

165 - Carr dec Kennedy. I feel confident about this as Carr has looked great and is tested this year. Kennedy will bring it though. 15-7 Iowa.

174 - Broderson dec Brands. This is going to be a 1 TD battle. 3-2 type match. Brands looked like he’s not 100% in the dual against Penn. 15-10 Iowa

184 - Coleman dec Assad. I think Coleman is close to a major here, but not quite. 5-6 point win. 15-13 Iowa

197 - Bastida dec Warner. Simply better. Warner’s path to victory is to hold Bastida off and make it an escape and RT win. Think Bastida can get the 2-3 TDs he needs. 16-15 ISU.

Hvy - Cassioppi fall Schuyler. 21-16 Iowa.

This dual really comes down to who Iowa sends out at 125. If Lee goes, it will be a tough hill to climb. If not, ISU is right there..

It would be nice if ISU could steal one of 33 or 49, and the Bastida match is huge.

2022 Football post mortem/looking forward

Defense: Great year. Keep building and doing what you do. Some holes to fill, but I think we will have another great unit next year.

Offense: Take this experience and go to work. This year was horrible offensively, but we were also young in key spots. Some staff changes probably need to be made as well, as this unit was way too predictable all year, and the scheme was too easy to defend.

Special teams: We need a major rework here. I think we're set at punter for a few years, but the rest of it was pretty consistently awful. Whatever the plan has been, scrap it and develop another one.

TJ’s game management

I thought TJ’s half-time comments last night would be compelling to any potential recruits. His clarity and focus in laying out the character of the team he recruits and coaches seemed compelling. No window dressing, just telling what he demands and gets: intense, focused play on both ends, and a never let up attitude.

His game management stood out: offensive sets, handling of the press and in-bounds situations, intensity of switching defenses, and especially player rotations. Kunc played 33 minutes; the other bigs had 15 fouls to give over 47 minutes and did a good job countering and even besting Carolina’s vaunted bigs. Grill led all with 38 minutes on the court, obviously with his offensive explosion, and again with stellar D. Holmes was a steady leader at both ends in 29 minutes, Lipsey continued to show maturity above his age, Kalscheur contributed as a ball handler and scoring threat NC had to acknowledge, and with outstanding D. The two steals from Bacot by Kalscheur and Jones in the final two minutes were beautiful demonstrations of Otzelberger ball.

Edit: Jones has sneaky quick hands, and physically, clearly backs down from no one - actually an attitude characteristic of the whole team.

Will be interesting to see how the rotation changes after Tre King becomes eligible on December 18th. Current YTD minutes played, Grill leads among guards with 32.6 pg, then Holmes 31.2 pg, Kalscheur 25 pg, Lipsey 24 pg and Watson 11.4. In the posts, Kunc averages 29.4 minutes pg, Osunniyi 18.6 pg, Jones 17.4 pg and Ward 12.4. Eli King and Hawley have negligible minutes in clean up time.

Postgame locker room celebration North Carolina (2022)

I put the year so people knew which win it was since North Carolina is usually a win.
