A note on NIL - Jack Trice was paid to come to ISU

With NIL, I wanted to share some history about how the sausage was always made. National outlets have decried paying college players for 100+ years.

LATE 1800s:

Yale and Harvard alumni tried to outspend each other for players every year and (amazingly enough) kept winning the "national championship" (sport was mostly regional at the time).

EARLY 1900s:

One star player was constantly "suspended" by a Big Ten school for missing or poor academic work, yet somehow these suspensions were never during the season.

A California college offered a Midwest prep star crazy money for himself AND a "companion" but they were turned down when local alumni paid him to attend a nearby Midwest school instead.

AFTER WWI:

I have original research (not yet shared!) showing that Coach Sam Willaman made certain "funds" available for his East Tech boys, including Jack Trice, to come to ISU. Only a few years later, ISU tried bowling their stadium, but due to lack of alumni support, failed.

Alumni made money available for Hawkeye star Duke Slater.

AFTER WWII:

Shortly after World War II, Michigan State literally bought their way into the Big Ten by tapping a donor to create a slush fund. They were quickly put on probation, but no one cared. They were in the club.

It's nothing new. Players deserve their money and it has always been alumni paying them. They are the ones suffering long-term health consequences to entertain and enrich massive media conglomerates worth billions. Yes, we can quibble about how NIL is currently being administered, but it's LONG OVERDUE for all of this stuff to be visible. The facade of "amateurism" has always been a joke. Always.

offensive line help

we all know that we need offensive line help but where will that help come from? are there any players on the roster that can step next year that didnt see any time this year because of redshirt or injury? or do we raid the power 5 transfer portal and try to get some new blood into the program.

it just seems to me we everyone jumping into the portal there has to be some power 5 offensive lineman that are better than what we have right now

Iowa NIL Update

Wanted to share some of what I’ve put together on Iowa NIL from various sources since there is a lot of talk about what we might be up against.

From what I’ve heard – Iowa could pull together roughly $5-6 mil for NIL right now between their various channels. That’s expected to increase another $5-7 mil in the next 12-18 months as they realign where donors direct money. There are some that believe they could get to $20 mil by 2025 as the new media contract allows further realignment of funds.

While $10-12 mil/year wouldn’t put them in the same category as the elite NIL schools (Bama, Georgia, USC, tOSU, Michigan, TN, Miami, A&M, Oregon, Florida, Texas, Nebraska, etc), it would put them in the Top 30. If they got to $20 mil, they’d be closer to 15-20th.

On That Note: Give Heaven Some Hell

Welcome to another edition of “On That Note,” CF’s weekly music series, co-hosted by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and myself.

A few weeks ago we did a topic featuring words angel and devil. This time around we are focusing on the places they both reside heaven and hell. We are looking for songs with heaven or hell in either the title and lyrics.

Last Week: On That Note: New ’22

Heisman Trophy malaise

This isn't a spicy take, by any means, but can you think of a major sports award that has lost its meaning and gravitas to the same degree that the Heisman Trophy has?
I feel like the shine has almost completely come off this apple. The candidates feel like an afterthought. We already know who's going to win. Make no mistake, Caleb Williams deserves it. But if you look at the history of the award this century, there are only something like 5 non quarterbacks. It's just feels very run of the mill, anymore, and not nearly as prestigious. Perhaps my memory is assigning more significance to bygone days.

The first of two previews on the way for this Wednesday's Cy-Hawk game at Carver. Interesting quote from Joens, but not at all surprised when I heard it. Going to be another great game:

RECRUITING: Stanford RB transfer Arlen Harris Jr. says Iowa State is 'really high' on his list

For you knight owls, talked to Arlen Harris Jr. tonight. He visited Iowa City last week and will visit Ames this weekend. Seems Iowa State is already very high up on his list of choices. Narrowed it down to four for us - but keep in mind that is just at the moment and a lot can still happen.

In a record setting year, the Big XII conference has qualified 8 teams for Bowl season. All games will be on ESPN.

Here is the scoreboard:

With TCU elevated to the CFP, the remaining teams are promoted a level higher in the bowl pecking order than they would have been. That means any wins will need to be hard fought. The oddsmakers project the Big XII will go 2-6, with only Baylor and Texas being favored. But what d they know?

Who you got?

And where will the odds makers be wrong?
