XM/Sirius merger approved

Re: XM/Sirius meger approved

Where did you see this? Link?

It's in the link provided:

However, the companies said last year that they would be willing to offer a so-called "a la carte" price plan where consumers could pick certain packages ranging from $6.99 a month to $16.99 a month. The two companies have also maintained that a combined service offering the best of both companies' offerings will cost less than the $25.90 a month that a consumer would currently have to pay to subscribe to both Sirius and XM.

Re: XM/Sirius meger approved

There are a few music channels on XM that do have commercials which is the 1 thing I don't like. Never had that with a Sirius music channel.

Hard to explain but some of the music lineups and formats just seem better on Sirius although I have found a few I like better on XM too. Both have their pros and cons, being able to pick ala carte will be a plus if they allow it.

They have like 70 that are commercial free. I don't know what you were listening to.

There are 5 Clear Channel produced channels that air commercials. I am not an XM sub,so I am not sure how often they air, but since Clear Channel was an initial investor to start XM, they had a court battle to air commericials on their produced channels when XM dropped them from the other channels. Here's the link...KISS

Yeah, they have a few commercial channels that are clearchannel including one of my favorite channels, which is also not streamed. Also there is a few XM specific channels that have commercials, most notabley the uncensored comedy channel has commercials.

If they raise the prices, people will leave. I highly doubt that prices will be raised considerably. I have been a Sirius subscriber for over 4 years, and am VERY excited about the merger.

Mostly, it means you should be able to listen to almost any sporting event. Sirius has NFL, NASCAR, and a lot of college sports... And XM has baseball.

Like superdorf said, I don't think they have the loyalty to raise prices. I know a lot of people that couldn't go without cable/satellite but I know very few that HAVE to have satellite radio. Maybe if you have to travel for work or something. I like to listen to CNBC, BBC, and Fox News in the morning on the way to work but I could do without it.

As a person that works for terrestrial radio, I'm torn on this. I DO subscribe to XM because my wife likes to listen to the Wisconsin football games while we tailgate at ISU games. I love the baseball play by play and being able to always hear my White Sox. The channels that I really like are mostly copied on Sirius, so the only benefits for me as a subscriber would be to get Big 12 Football and NFL games. Otherwise, XM's music programming is just fine for me.

Now, as a local broadcaster, this does concern me a bit. Offering more choice on the satellite dial gives listeners another reason to walk away from local radio. However, local radio will always be the one that people go to when things like severe weather and big local stories happen. Satellite isn't as big of a competitor to us as iPods are, but it's getting stronger with this merger. Part of me is hoping the FCC shuts this down.

jbing... You are the reason that this merger has been held up so long. I realize that local radio is upset about SAT.

You need to put compelling programming on and you won't have a problem.

The NAB is the only reason that this merger has been held up, I haven't met a single sat radio subscriber who hasn't wanted this to go through.

Their rates wouldn't go up if they would quit spending money like drunken polititions. $300 million for Howard Sterns, when he was about to be banned by the FCC. He would have jumped for a fraction of that money.

No XM is GOOD! The thing it does it makes local radio compete, same deal with local tv and satellite. The problem with local radio is there is just too many commercials. I know you have to pay the bills, but jeez, I have a 25 min commute, and some days I would only hear 2 songs on the way to work with all the commercials.

I dropped XM when we moved office buildings and I don't really miss it now that ESPN radio is back on in DM.

Why couldn't XM pick up some of the local stations in the area just like DirecTV does? I don't know if that's even possible but it makes sense to me.

I'd like to know how Sirius kicks the crap out of XM for someone who doesn't listen to any sports channels. I actually just listen to about 4 channels on XM right now, so wondering what better stuff Sirius has besides sports.
